I. 5 I 3 3 5 I l ix, 1 G 2 E E 5 READY FOR ACTION-Coach lohnson and the basketball team shake hands before going into action in Fargason Field House. They are, around the circle, clockwise: 5689? N51 Um' Ilnmlrerl l ifI'v-.six Coach Iohnson, Frank Horton, lim Cunningham, lohn Maxwell, Ierry Wood, and Benny Larnberth, The Lynx didn't have much of a basketball team to build or for the 1951-52 season. The l950-51 squad had lost fifteen straigh games before disbanding in mid-season and had been ridde with strife and discord between the players. But this year's tean had a new coach, four new faces, and a lot of spirit. The stude body was behind them, and they were out to earn that studen support, Earn it they did, although the record Wouldn't testify to i The cagers won only one game during the entire season, that squeaker over Millsaps in Fargason in December, But they wer in there kicking from late November until February and non could say they didn't try. 1 ,Y BILL ALLEN WHEATLEY BEARD It was a young team. Three of the starters were freshmen, two of them fresh from the Region Eight champion East I-ligh team of 1951. lim Cunningham and Frank Horton were the graduated Mustangs and lohn Maxwell joined the Lynx from a fine Dyersburg High squad. Cunningham and Maxwell won starting forward posts and Horton took a guard slot. Center Iohn Austin was the only first string returnee from 1951 and he held his old spot. Bob Crumby, who had played a lot of Intra- mural basketball, won the other varsity guard post. The team was hit hard when Austin was graduated in mid- season, but Boxie Lee and Benny Lamberth moved up from the second string to handle the vacancy left at forward after Max- well moved to the pivot slot. Sophomore Wheatley Beard came along fine as a capable substitute for Maxwell. Ierry Wood, another freshman, looked good at guard in the later games. HM CUNNINGHAM One Htuzdred Fifty-.wwen ROXIE LEE IERRY Woon Bill Allen also got into a num- ber of games as substitute for- ward and performed capably. The team's main difficulty was lack of reserve strength. All three i of the freshmen displayed an IOHN MAXWELL amazing propensity for fouling out and every game saw at least two of them and sometimes all three sitting out a large portion of the final period. But they've got three more years and Coach Iohnson is looking forward to banner years in the future. Only Austin will he gone next year, unless the Army or dropping out of college affects the team, for only Austin was a senior, and he wasn't around for the finish this year. Coach Iohnson has made up an ambitious schedule for next year, booking such. perennial cage powerhouses as Tulane, LSU and Washington U. of St. Louis for next year. LSU was the team which almost upset Kentucky in the Southeastern Conference tourney this year and will have virtually the same squad this year. ln addition games are scheduled with several of Southwesterrfs traditional foes, including Larnbuth, Union, Sewanee, Millsaps, Mis- sissippi College, Memphis State and Memphis Navy. Q7 t 1 '- s aww ' Lapsley Looney Henry TENNIS Usually a power in Mid-South tennis, the Lynx had a fine squad from last year decimated by graduation and had mustered only one win in ten matches at presstime for the Lynx. Coach Bill Maybry's outlook for next year is not as bright as the basketball picture, for three of the tennis team are seniors- Ecl Wills, the number one man, lim Mitchell and lim Lapsley. But number two man Burton Henry is only a sophomore and number three player Dave Walthall a freshman. Add Buck Looney, a junior, and Maybry has the nucleus around which to build a team next year. The most ambitious undertaking in the tennis world this year was the first annual Southwestern Prep Invitational Tournament which saw fourteen performers from seven high schools vie for the championships. Christian Brothers College Won the team trophy with Luttrell of CBC winning the singles crown and Luttrell and Metz, also of CBC taking the doubles title. The meet was widely publicized. Luttrell later won the Memphis Prep League champion- ship and Luttrell and Metz won the city doubles crown. Walthall l Mitchell Peterson. Mgr. GULF The Lynx linksters also had a disastrous season. Only four men came out for the golf team, therefore the squad played under strength and performances suffered accordingly. But the outlook is bright in this picture. Only lack Hudgins, the number one man will be graduated and Maybry has un- covered some capable golf talent in Intramural ranks which he plans to mold into next year's varsity. Hudgins played consistently fine golf, as did Don Ramier. The others were alternately good and bad, but turned in some good performances against more experienced competition. O t Peterson, Mgr. Coach Maybry Ramier Hudgins cr es One Hundred Fifty-nine l Horton in Action B SEB!-XLL It was in baseball that Lynx athletes racked up the best record for the l95l-52 school year. At presstime the Cats had won five games and lost eight, one of them a 5-4 defeat by Memphis State. Injuries plagued the Lynx with Tommy Crais, centerfielder, being lost for the season early and other players being forced to miss important games. But there were no seniors on the squad and Coach Iohnson can definitely look forward to better times. Freshman Frank Horton performed more than capably behind the plate and will probably develop into the best catcher ever to don a Lynx uniform. Bill Allen, shifted from third base to shortstop this year, had a little trouble getting accustomed to the new position, but should go great guns with a year's experience there. Capt- 511611-S-S Roxie Lee showed promise of be- Wi11idmS-P- coming a first rate second base- l man and Iohn Gilbert and lim Cunningham will be ready to occupy the other two infield posts next year. Clark Young, Crais and Bob Crumby, this year's starting outfield will be back to take those positions. The mound staff will return in- tact and Ron Davis should be able to match the hot pace set by Bill Williams this year. Davis had had no college pitching experi- ence before this year, while Wil- liams had been a starter last year. Buddy Allison may also be called upon for hill work and Bob 1 Crumby can pitch if necessary. E sv Ex n r sl, -- Wg , I -1 1 , 35 ,M .U fy 'J 1 ' inf? J s,1i..L'H'1s,,u- -: fp? . TH Eli Southwestern fielded a track team this year for the first time in two years and the thinclads ac- quitted themselves admirably under the circum- stances. They lost a number of dual meets, but placed third in the only triangular meet they en- tered. Lack of depth hurt the Lynx. Usually South- western could field but one man for each event and such a lineup negates the possibility of winning a dual track meet. The other team can slaughter you with seconds and thirds which he collects automatically. Two stars rose to outshine all others on the track. Prentice Fulton, unfortunately a senior, was probably the best hurdle man in the area and one of the best dash men. Allen Cooke, running the distance races for the first time, acquited himself well, turning the iron man feat of winning all three distance races in the triangular meet with Union and Bethel in Iackson, Tenn. Cooke placed first in the 880-yard run, the mile run and the two mile run. Fulton was the top scorer of the Lynx track team, having collected 81 points in five meets at Lynx presstime. There was a lot of interest in track both among athletes and the student body and there is a lot of room for development. Wheatley Beard and Bill Hughes can go a long way with the weights, and Happy Henry and Charlie Sullivan can win the jumping events with more training.
