To The Class oT I947: IT was a Tense, Tearsome, and uncerTain Time in SepTember, I943, when TiTTy-Tive men and nineTy-eighT women enrolled asmembers oT This class. During The pasT Tour years we have been awed and sobered by world-shaking happenings. Able propheTs had Told us ThaT we were living aT The end oT an age, buT we Tound iT diTTiculT To believe Them and To adiusT ourselves To This idea. On AugusT 6, l945, however, when The TirsT aTomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, we were sTunned inTo a realizaTion ThaT The curTain had risen upon a new world drama, one in which noT only we, buT many oThers hiTherTo almosT unknown, would be The chief acTors. Science gave us The aTomic bomb, buT, since iT is admiTTed ThaT There is no Technological deTense from iTs ravages, science cannoT give us ThaT One World of righTeousness and undersTanding, oT kindliness and goodwill, wiThouT which There can be no hope ThaT The play will be oTher Than a Terrible Tragedy. l-lowever imporTanT are The poliTical, The economic, and The social problems, The major problem oT our Time is TundamenTally eThical. The only answer To aTomic power is moral power, and The Golden Rule is The one True plumb line. Some oT The original members of This graduaTing class have given Their lasT Tull measure OT devoTion, and will never reTurn. They died ThaT we mighT live and labor To Tashion a uniTed world, one in which all men will sTrive To Tollow The ScripTural iniuncTion To do iusTly, To love mercy, and To walk humbly wiTh Thy God. Each one oT us shares in The oppor- TuniTy and responsibiliTy oT This epoch-making period. To all Those who are, or were. members oT This Class, we wish To exTend our good wishes and our aTTecTionaTe regard. We express The high hope ThaT They, and we, may have The vision and The courage boldly To seek peace and perseveringly To pursue iT: ThaT all of us may be prepared To make sacriTices Tor The sake oT a iusT and enduring order as readily as we made sacriTices in Time of war, unTil suspicion, misTrusT, Tear, and haTred are banished Trom The world oT God our FaTher.
