To fhe Class of I946: The sudden cessafion of hosfilifies lasf summer filled all of us wifh an exhilarafing sense of grafifude and of hope. Deep scars remained, for some of our number, like fhaf greaf soul fo whom fhis Lynx is dedi- cafed, would never refurn, and some who refurned would be maimed, buf fhe ofhers would be back before long, and forfy-five nafions were signing fhe Unifed Nafions Charfer. To fhis counfry, which had nof been devasfafed, fhe fufure beckoned wifh unique opporfunifies and respon- sibilifies. The lighfs were coming on again, buf fhey revealed a vasfly differenf world. New condifions and grave problems of a polifical, economic, social, and moral nafure are facing us. Never was fhe world's need so greaf. Every- where fhere are ruined cifies, homeless mulfifudes, shivering children, hungry families, looking fo fhis counfry, which, in fhe providence of God, has been given fhe responsibilify for world leadership, for relief, rehabili- fafion, and recovery. l-lenceforfh, if musf be one world or no world af all. lnfelligenf goodwill, courage, pafience, and sfrong faifh in our Heav- enly Fafher and l-lis Efernal Purpose for mankind are required for fhe building of a decenf, cooperafive world. The pracfice of fhe Chrisfian philosophy of life, fo which Soufhwesfern sfudenfs are nof sfrangers, is our one hope for a iusf and enduring peace. Upon only five ouf of fhe IO7 men who enfered fhe freshman class in Sepfember, I942, will degrees be conferred in June, IQ46, buf many more of fhese IO7 men have now refurned fo Soufhwesfern from fhe armed services, and will graduafe lafer. To all of fhese, fo ofher men who are graduafing, as well as fo fhe women, fo whom degrees will be awarded fhis year, we wish fo exfend our greefings, our good wishes, and our affecfionafe regard. We express fhe earnesf hope fhaf fhey, and we, despife fhe confusions of fhese perilous fimes, may find if a greaf fime fo be alive, because we are helping fo lay fhose spirifual foundafions upon which alone fhe Cify of God can be builf.
