As someone who Is interested in se- quences and letterforms, Duane Mic- hals’ concept of RISD plays off both elements at one time. Duane asked for a number of students who would be photographed in dif- ferent RISD locations. These locations were picked for their generic qualities. They could be classrooms, stairways, hallways, parking lots, almost any- where on the RISD campus. In December of 1985, Duane Michals posed his subjects in different letter- forms. Using a 35mm camera, he took dozens of different shots of each let- terform, varying the textures, light and locations before making the final: selections for this Portfolio. As is appropiate for a project of this nature, Duane Michals’ photographs form the letters and numbers that make up ‘RISD 1986 ’.
