The combined effo Above all, itis a very class of 1986 and for al o rat Po - As someone who Is interested in se- quences and letterforms, Duane Mic- hals’ concept of RISD plays off both elements at one time. Duane asked for a number of students who would be photographed in dif- ferent RISD locations. These locations were picked for their generic qualities. They could be classrooms, stairways, hallways, parking lots, almost any- where on the RISD campus. In December of 1985, Duane Michals posed his subjects in different letter- forms. Using a 35mm camera, he took dozens of different shots of each let- terform, varying the textures, light and locations before making the final: selections for this Portfolio. As is appropiate for a project of this nature, Duane Michals’ photographs form the letters and numbers that make up ‘RISD 1986 ’. Assistant: Justin Kimble To capture the essence of RISD, Starr Ockenga used a 4x5 camera and a still-life format to create visual tapestries of each department and discipline. For three days in January 1986, Starr and her stylist Eileen Doolittle, wan- dered in and out of students work areas, interviewed students and col- lected objects that reflected their various specialties. When Starr could not find specific objects, she com- missioned students to create them. In February, she returned and added her own elements to make up the final compositions. These were placed on a frame and shot on a one-to-one scale. My passion was as extreme as my experience was limited. I had glimpsed that the camera could be my tool for personal expression. I had to find out if it could also be the means of my livelihood. I had to find out if I had the necessary talent to justify the commitment. I took risks and loans and gave myself the gift of time to explore my resources. RISD was the catalyst that allowed me to begin my profession. I was also one of the lucky ones, who sat under Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind as they helped each of us to find our own voice and establish our own independent and unique vision. Years pass quickly, and the professional and personal activi- ties that form the puzzles of our lives are added, subtracted, multiplied and divided. As part of my puzzle, I have contin- ued to return to RISD, sometimes just to visit and sometimes to participate in such events as Career Day or this Portfolio. Each walk down Benefit Street evokes the sweet nostalgia I reserve for my life’s most special places. But more important, is the excitement I always feel as I am challenged and stimulated by RISD’s changing complexion of faculty and students. During my two years as a student at RISD, I was commuting from Boston’s North Shore and had a small child waiting for me each time I was away. My time in Providence was always too short and necessarily focused on my photography classes. | often wished I could spend time learning to weave or blow glass or make sculpture. Thus, in making these pic- tures I gave myself another gift: the time to go to the studios of each discipline, the privilege of observing work evolve into art, the satisfaction of asking a myriad of questions and the pleasure of gathering the bits and pieces that are the threads of the RISD tapestry. These pictures, as a whole, are my homage to RISD’s parts. The only criteria was that the objects should in some way reflect the lifestyle of the students at the Rhode Island School of Design. During three days in January of 1986, Laurence Bach reviewed, arranged and shot hundreds of different objects. These objects came from studios, apartments and homes; and included tools, toys, jewelry and other personal articles. The photographs themselves were then juxtaposed, providing both a statement and a visual time capsule of the life at RISD. He originally studied art at the University of Denver and the Par- sons School of Design. Since 1958, Duane has worked as a freelance photographer for such magazines as Vogue, Mademoiselle, Horizon and Scientific American. He has also lectured at the New York School of Visual Arts. Over the last thirty years, Duane Michals’ works has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world. In Europe, his work has been shown in Antwerp, Cologne, Frankfurt, Milan, Turin, Paris, Vien- na, Berlin, The Hague and Amster- dam. In USA, he has held exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Denver, San Francisco, Cincinnati, and many other cities. In addition, he has more than ten books to his credit and has ap- peared as the subject of dozens of articles. Duane Michals is best known as a surrealist who works in photo- graphic sequences which are often accompanied by a handwritten narrative. His work seeks to rede- fine our sense of reality by un- dermining it. In a statement that appeared in his book Rea Dreams (1977), he wrote ‘I believe in the imagination. What | cannot see is infinitely more important than what | can see... When you look at my photographs, you are looking at my thoughts.’ Starr Ockenga Starr Ockenga studied photography at RISD as a graduate student under Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. Two years after her graduation in 1974, she joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Techno- _logy and became an Associate Professor of Photography. For the next six years, she taught at MIT full time and directed the Institute's Creative Photography Program and Gallery. She has also pioneered a photography program for special needs students in Haverhill, MA, taught photography to quadripel- gic patients at a veteran's hospital in Boston, taught a workshop at the Rencontre Internationales de la Photographie in Arles, France, and was a Visiting Professor at Bennington College, VT. Currently operating a studio in New York City, Starr does commissioned portraits of both adults and children. She also takes a variety of assign- ments for magazines and commer- cial clients. Author of Mirror after Mirror and Dress-Up , she recently completed a book of photographs for children, which will be published in 1987. Her work has been published in Esquire, Life, Close-Up, Boston, Chicago, The Massachusetts Re- view, Interview, Camera, The Time-Life Photography Series, Les Cahiers de la Photographie, La Familie des Portraits, The Male Nude in Photography, Fotographie. Exhibitions include: The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; The Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans; Silver Image Gallery, Seattle; Gallery One, Fort Worth; Pavillon des Arts, Paris; Georgia State University, Atlanta; Canon Photo Gallery, Amsterdam; Munich State Museum, Munich; Catskill Center for Photography, Woodstock, VT; Baskerville and Watson, New York. Starr's photographs are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, The Biblio- theque Nationale and the Polaroid Corporation. Starr Ockenga received a NEA Fellow- ship in 1981 for a series of nude portraits,and in 1983 she was granted a Massachusetts Artists Fellowship for her work with babies. Jim Dow Jim Dow is an alumnus of RISD, having studied photography under Harry Callahan. After graduation, he worked for Walker Evans at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and taught photography at the Vancouver School of Art in British Columbia and Harvard University. In 1972, Jim was awarded a NEA grant to ‘photograph along the American roadscape particularly the old routes that have been supplanted by the Interstate System’. In 1974, he received a Guggenheim Fellowship in Photography, which allowed him to continue the work he began under the NEA grant. Dur- ing 1975 and 1976, he traveled more than 75,000 miles throughout the United States. Jim Dow received another NEA grant in 1979 for travel in the United States and England. This led to a commission from RGF Publishing to photograph twenty six major league ball parks in this country. Jim Dow’s works have been shown at the Museum of Modern Art, the Vision Gallery and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Nexus Gal- lery (Atlanta), the Rudolph Kicken Gallery (Cologne), the Robert Friedus Gallery (New York) and England's Crescent Art Centre, among others. Jim Dow is currently teaching photography at the Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston. On his ap- proach to photography, he once commented, ‘In my pictures, | am committed to showing how human beings leave their mark on the places and spaces they occupy. The quirks and individuality of such things seem to me to be the most interesting human activity of all.’ Laurence Bach Laurence Bach has been a guest lecturer in photography at RISD. His formal education included train- ing at the Allegemeine Gewerbe- schule in Basel, Switzerland and the Philadelphia College of Art. Since 1970, Laurence has taught at a number of schools, including the Aegean School of Fine Arts in Greece, the Moore College of Art, and the Philadelphia College of Art, where he is currently Adjunct Associate Professor. He also holds a position as Associate Professor, Chairman, Graphic Design Depart- ment, at the State University of New York College, Purchase, NY. In 1976, he received a Faculty Re- search Fellowship at the State University of New York. This was followed by grants from the Na- tional Endowment for the Arts in 1980, the Polaroid Corporation in 1981, and the New York State Council on the Arts in 1982. Laurence Bach has held one man exhibitions at the Laurence Miller Gallery (New York), the Marian Locks Gallery (Philadelphia), Wes- lyan University (Connecticut), the Photographic Center of Athens (Greece), the Photography Gallery (Philadelphia), the Modernism Gal- lery (San Francisco), The Photo- grapher’s Gallery (London) and the Neuberger Museum (New York). In 1982, Laurence Bach published The Paros Dream Book; thirty-one photographs with thirty one medita- tions by Robert Cooke Goolrick. In January of 1986, Jim visited the campus and investigated the class- rooms, stairways, workspaces, etc. in order to find those ares which exemplified the RISD environment. Using an 8x10 camera, he began to record the interiors of different areas, much as a historian would record different facts and figures. Working with a student assistant, he arranged the objects present and experimented with lighting in order to emphasize certain details and create an effective mood. Harris, Laura McPhee, John Willis Laurence Bach's approach to the RISD experience was similar to that of a cultural archeologist. For Portfolio 1986, Laurence asked students to bring personal objects which he would arrange and photo- graph. The only criteria was that the objects should in some way reflect the lifestyle of the students at RISD. During three days in March of 1986, Laurence Bach reviewed, arranged and shot hundreds of different objects in black and white, using a 2 1 4 x 2 1 4 format camera.
