8 Portfol af j i } a Were at PI Tay yen yah , thas Wats nity f A tt ‘ i, at yea Seat - Ma $ This book is dedicated to my fellow students to whom | owe the greatest percentage of my edu- cation. It is not the school alone, the ‘‘name, or the fine faculty that makes RISD one of the most accomplished art schools: it's the students’ own relentless striving for perfection. The word school comes from the Greek ‘‘schole” meaning ‘‘play or ‘‘leisure.’’ Not work for gain but design for joy in time. But the word ‘‘school” is now used, in our current negotia- tions, to refer exclusively to the administration, not to faculty or students. For me RISD is almost as familiar a term as my own name. In 1957 my uncle Herb Fink was teaching printmaking. He introduced me to his former drawing instructor, President John Frazier, and | joined the staff of the English de- partment. Herb was a remarkable draftsman. | had known his work (play) since he was a teen- ager and | was a baby. He used to carve dragons and dinosaurs out of soap, and figures of Indians on horseback from hunks of balsa. He built me toy boats for birthdays. He painted huge murals of pirates on our cellar walls when he was 13. My mother too had magic hands. On the kitchen walls she put murals of birds feeding worms to their fledglings. Propaganda to urge us to eat. She copied our furniture in precise miniature. Though | took Saturday classes at RISD in lifedrawing, watercolor and ceramics, | did not inherit the magic, but only the love of it. The respect for play. At RISD teaching English, | was drawn either to writers who bond word to image—comicstrips, moviescripts and naturelore. Or to writers who think in pictures. | felt close to many students over the years. | imagined that we wer e each teaching the other how to render experience. RISD has become my extended family. Personal events blend with those of the college. The quest for form in the fifties. The shaping of protest in the sixties. The search for sanity in the seventies. Now we are in the eighties. The drive is for success and survival. Though we strive in marketplace and studio, | still believe the value of play, or leisure, is intrinsic to the idea of art. We look back upon our years in college with fond focus. During these years we construct ideals, learn to see and care in new ways. Faces, words and adventures become part of us. RISD is the aroma of wood, wool, oil, clay. The lonely lighting ona polished marble corridor. The Buddha and the Mummy: spirit translated into object. We too are RISD. RISD touches each of us witha hope for a better world. And for a hand in building it. Let nothing cut down the commu- nity of hope that we share and the light and delight that we give to each other. RISD president Lee Hall presented an optimistic report on such matters as the school's finances and a master plan called ‘RISD: 2000. But she didn't seem to give students the answers they wanted on the loss of a student bar, the Tap Room, and other complaints. “We could raise tuition, Miss Hall said, when asked by one student why the present generation is having to suffer for future improvements. ‘But we have decided to do things logically, sequen- tially and as we can pay for it. Besides the Tap Room, some of the complaints were about the temporary closing of the glass shop, the closing of the fifth floor of the Archi- tectural Studies Building and the use of part-time faculty. Miss Hall said that faculty had been increased, but several students insisted that most of the increase was in part-time faculty. A woman in textile studies said that these part-time teachers lack commitment to the school and sometimes fail to show up for classes, Questions from the 1,000-odd students in the RISD auditorium were sometimes hostile. After an hour, when one student interrupted Miss Hall three times with questions about plans for addi- tional housing, Miss Hall broke off the assembly with a sarcastic ''l appreciate this opportunity to answer your questions.’ The students booed as she left the podium. “It's obvious that the students have been primed, ' said Neil Severance, vice president of student affairs, referring to questions that had been asked about full-time and part-time faculty. He suggested that these issues came from the unresolved contract negotiations continuing between the college and the faculty. The faculty agreed last August not to strike despite the lack of a contract. The Tap Room, a popular gathering spot where students enjoyed beer and live music, was closed at the end of the last spring semester. A federal audit forced the closing, Miss Hall said, because the Tap Room was deemed a “program” inaccessible to the handicapped. She said that the college is trying to get the city to approve a temporary transfer of the beer license to a snack bar in the same building, but students apparently were not happy with this proposal. Evening Bulletin 11-13-81 oR) Second letter to the Editor | write in winter, but you will read my report in spring. Your senior year, a troubled one. The discontent of this winter began several seasons ago. | wonder how it will end, if it will end. Until recently department and division heads were elected from and by faculty. Now we in English have no department, no representation. The division head is appointed by administra- tion. His job? As | see it, to discourage and dis- tract us from our work. Why? Because there are so many unemployed teachers ‘‘out there” who would work for less money, shorter con- tracts: migrant labor. Further, management can control or at least dominate easier without an established faculty and its political memory. In the 50's when | was in school, the cold war hysteria with its anti-intellectual, anti-artistic atmosphere, its House UnAmerican Activities Committee, threw the teacher into a harsh spotlight. One who dared to speak or write on liberal ideas might and often did lose both job and academic future. Presently, it is more difficult to determine why certain teachers are under attack. Because they remember the school’s past? The issue seems to have to do with the dignity of the profession, the vocation and life of the teacher—and of the institution with which the teacher identifies. My own courses represent both the expression of my education, background, tastes and char- acter, and also my commitment to the values of the school as | have perceived them. Studio people have always felt mixed attitudes toward us in liberal arts; we have maintained a creative dialectic. But administration assaults us with destructive monologue. This year | had two grievances against administrators, one here, one gone off. | won the first case, and my foe is no longer at R.I.S.D. (Not because | won, however. | ‘wuz stung by a dead bee. ') The second griev- ance | have lodged along with a colleague in the former English department, against negative annual reports written by a chief who had been here only one semester when he condemned all my courses. | felt he had no qualifications to make his judgments. That he was in fact hired to destroy my career. And or someone else's. Do | have the right to use a figure model in my English class? Is film a legitimate medium for an English class? Is Jewish narrative a valid course—as | have created and as | have taught these classes? Other esteemed members of my division have had similar experiences within the past year. Half the faculty at large have been Subjected to rude and ignorant treatment. My case is not unique. The real issue? Who is stronger, the teacher or the administrative adversary? A suggestion for a solution: administrators who support and show courtesy to the faculty of the Rhode Island School of Design. A request: Continue and deepen as alumni your ties with the faculty. We consider you to bea bond for us in our lives and careers. Together, we constitute a society of friends and allies in the world of art and ideas, a world of pleasures and of stresses. Michael Fink Noted artist quits RISD illustrator-author resigns in a searing letter PROVIDENCE—David A. Macaulay, a nationally known illustrator and best-selling author, has quit his part-time teaching job at the Rhode island School of Design as a protest against the school administration. The school is ruled, certainly not guided, by a president (Lee Hall) whose insensitivity toward, and disdain for, her faculty is matched only by the ineptitude of the pathetically unimaginative staff,' Macaulay wrote ina searing letter of resignation. Classes for the school’s 1,600 art students resumed yesterday. “This is not the kind of letter one can respond to, ’ said Joan Patota, vice president for public affairs. ‘We are very sorry to lose him. He is a brilliant illustrator and an excellent teacher. | have no comment beyond that.” Macaulay, 34, is a 1969 RISD graduate who returned to his alma mater as a full-time teacher in 1974. Macaulay began building a national reputation as an illustrator in 1973 with the publication of his book ‘‘Cathedral, ’ which illustrates how a Gothic cathedral was built. The book was pub- lished by the juvenile division of Houghton Mifflin Co., but also attracted adult readers and has sold over 100,000 copies. Since 1973, Macaulay has written seven other books: “City,” Pyramid, Underground, “Castle,” ‘Great Moments in Architecture, ‘Motel of the Mysteries” and ‘‘Unbuilding.” His books have won a number of awards and honors. From 1977 to 1979, Macaulay served as head of the school's illustration department. He quit in 1979 to devote full-time to his writing. Last year, he returned to the school as a part-time faculty member to teach two illustration courses. Macaulay was to have taught one illustration course each semester again this year, but sub- mitted his letter of withdrawal, dated Sept. 1. Macaulay sent copies of his letter to selected members of the board of trustees, administration and faculty. A copy was subsequently obtained by the Journal-Bulletin. In a telephone interview yesterday, Macaulay said that the ‘‘straw that broke the camel's back”’ was the failure of the school’s business office to send him any official communication indicating that he would be hired to teach the courses this year. “Had this minor slip been an exception to the rule, this letter might never had been written. However, it is not an exception to the rule. It is the rule,'’ he wrote in his letter. In the telephone interview, Macaulay said there was no single issue that soured him on the school administration. “The problem is that none of this is specific. | don't have any specific incidents. It's morea matter of feeling and attitude, he said. Evening Bulletin 9-17-81 230 231 Ad Hoc Self Study Committee of the Faculty Statement to the Board of Trustees As trustees of the Rhode Island School of Design, it goes without saying that chief among your concerns has to be the quality of education and the integrity of the institution. It is the faculty concern however, that through acute distortions of relationships necessary to any healthy academic community, the quality of education in this college is declining and the integrity of the institution is at stake. We have just completed an institutional self- Study and are in the midst of an accreditation evaluation. It is a time for the college to identify problems and opportunities and to take action toward a renewal of its purpose. The outstanding problem for this body then has to be the reestablishment of a dialogue with its faculty that will lead to an appropriate main- tenance and development of quality education and repair our integrity which has been damaged by the institutional warfare being waged against the faculty. The Accreditation Guide, which outlines standards and policies against which an insti- tution can measure its performance, is a very important document at this time and should serve as aresource and aid to the solution of our problems. We offer a quote here from the section on Institutional Integrity: ‘The maintenance and exercise of institu- tional integrity postulates and requires appropriate autonomy and freedom. Put positively this is the freedom to examine data, to question assumptions, to be guided by evidence, to teach what one knows—to be a learner and ascholar. Put negatively this is a freedom from unwarranted harrassment which hinders or prevents a college or uni- versity from getting on with its essential work. A college or university must be managed well and remain solvent, but it is not a business nor an industry.” The search for evidence and truth is nota privilege to be franchised to an administrative or managerial class. It is the coin of our academic realm whose currency is assured only by the freedom with which it is exchanged between the constituencies of our community. The highly regarded achievement of putting the college financially in the black will be of little consola- tion to the loss of our academic credibility. From the faculty point of view, the process by which the self-study was developed is more revealing of our difficulties than anything to be found in our published institutional assessments. For it is that process which prompted the forma- tion of this Ad Hoc Committee and its subsequent report. The accreditation guidelines are quite clear on the appropriate manner in which a self-study should be conducted. ‘An evaluation self-study is a research project, beyond the competence of either adminis- trators or faculty members alone. They need to combine forces to do it well. Faculty, administration, and students should be repre- sented in the steering committee and in the work force. Organize the study committees so that finally their work represents the entire institution.” “An important feature of this kind of study is that it brings the institution into focus, em- phasizes relationships among as well as performance within units, and stimulates healthy cross-fertilization of ideas. We have three documents being presented as a result of the self-study process and the sad fact is that the faculty can only support one of them, its own ad hoc report. We are further embar- rassed by the fact that one of the documents, RISD 2000, was adopted by the Board far in advance of the faculty's being able to see or comment upon its contents. This places us at the disadvantage of appearing to disagree without the opportunity of even friendly discussion let alone argument. How have we come to this condition? and what can be done? The lack of meaningful communication with this faculty appears to have roots in two myths, the planting and cultivation of which has been the responsibility of this administration. Myth | We quote from the Chronicle of Higher Education: “When a president is leading—is standing for something and directing or causing change— he is sure to meet with disfavor. He will be accused of not caring, of being aloof, of not leading. Those accusations are signs that a president is doing his job, that he is orchestrating change.” So You Want To Be A College President'’: Lee Hall—ca. 1980 While history compels us to recognize examples that would support such a statement, it is by no means an infallible doctrine. We must not allow such position taking to confuse or equate all change with progess and more importantly we must not allow such a doctrine to discredit responsible criticism of proposed change as reactionary and self-serving. Myth II “That a faculty which forms a bargaining unit is effectively disenfranchised from normal academic responsibility and function.” There is nothing mutually exclusive in having a formal bargaining mechanism, the Faculty Association, which negotiates salary scales and working conditions, and a Faculty Organization that serves as the academic conscience of the college and attends to academic matters neces- sary to maintain a responsible curriculum. Both of these functions are currently in place and the Faculty Ad Hoc Report is clear example of the academic prerogative of the Faculty Organization in action. Our problem is that it requires an extraordinary event suchas an accreditation review for the faculty to find a vehicle for communication with trustees. 232 233 So long as this condition exists this institution is certain to be in a state of decline. We are paying an unnecessary and unfortunate price for the want of a functioning dialogue that realizes some meaningful connection between planning, decision making and educational operations. We are laboring under a bloated administration with misplaced responsibilities, while more and more students are being placed in classes that are too large, in spaces that are inappropriate and too small, and who have too few options in the formation of their own education. As designers and educators this faculty instinc- tively understands that the present operation of this college is antithetical to both the design and the academic process. Whatever rationale has brought us to this con- dition has not worked, is not working, and cannot work. The faculty looks to the Board of Trustees to make some demonstration of their concern in these matters, so that this college can get on with its work with the health and vigor it requires to succeed. Me rlin Szosz for the faculty East Coast art school unit drops RISD PROVIDENCE—Rhode Island School of Design has been ousted from the programs of the East Coast Art Schools consortium in a rebuke to Lee Hall, RISD president, for failure to attend its meetings and for ‘‘non-cooperation.”’ The consortium of 11 art schools ranging from Nova Scotia School of Art to Philadelphia Col- lege of Art, was organized in October, 1976, to review and ‘formulate programs of mutual concern. Ranking officers of the 10 other consortium members met on April 20 at the Maryland In- stitute in Baltimore, and co-signed a letter to Dr. Hall, charging that her attitude is ‘‘redolent of disdain. Dr. Hall has ruffled art school administrators by withdrawing RISD from two of their associations —the National Association of Schools of Art and the Union of Independent Colleges of Art. In areply yesterday to the consortium, she wrote that ‘in both instances,’’ RISD withdrew “‘in order to plot more precisely and in our opinion more... appropriately our future course.” RISD's former provost, Jack Stewart, attended the consortium’s meetings last year. In mid- winter, Sadek wrote Dr. Hall asking if she would attend any of its three meetings this year. Her reply ‘‘was a two-line letter, ’ said David Levy, dean at Parsons School of Design in New York, that RISD was occupied with projects of urgency and excitement. “Sure, they're in a leading position, ’ Levy added. ‘But we're 10 busy guys and everybody shows up. It's a question of overall attitude. Providence Journal 5-3-78 234 feta August 20, 1981 Dear Students, The Tap Room has been closed for use as an alcohol dispensing facility. The following report outlines a) the factors affecting this decision to close the Tap Room, b) the present status of the Tap Room, and c) the Student Board position on the issue. A. SPECIFIC FACTORS AFFECTING THE DECISION TO CLOSE THE TAP ROOM a. The Federal Register contains the interpretation of the regulation entitled ‘‘Treatment of Students” requiring that all institutions of higher education ensure that ‘‘equal opportunities are provided to its handicapped students in education programs and activities. This was interpreted to RISD at a meeting on April 27, 1981 by the Office of Civil Rights to include the Tap Room as one of the programs at RISD that was inaccessible to the handicapped and was a key factor triggering the decision to close the Tap Room. This action was a part of a routine audit and not the result of any complaint made by any present student. . The change in the drinking age in the State of Rhode Island effective July 1, 1981, to age 20 was the second key factor considered. . The evaluation of the Tap Room as a College service led to the conclusion that it was not cost effective as a facility. . The general problems which have consistently been part of the Tap Room operation at its present location and under the present and previous management procedures further supported the decision to close it as an alcohol dispensing facility. 3.THE PRESENT STATUS OF THE TAP ROOM The College has approved the use of the present Tap Room space for the following: as The space will be retained for student use as a lounge that will be open days and evenings. Exact hours will be determined and announced. 2. Meetings of clubs and other student groups may be scheduled to take place in the lounge. 3. The Entertainment Committee of the Student Board is committed to programming activities on campus to provide adequate opportunities for social interchange. C. STUDENT BOARD POSITION Although the administration has taken a firm stand in opposition to re-opening the Tap Room in its present capacity (i.e., serving alcohol and providing live entertainment), the Student Board is making every effort to protect the interests of RISD students and will pursue negotiations in the hope that a reasonable settlement will be reached. Spokesmen for both sides said they hoped to resume bargaining for full- time faculty members tomorrow or Friday The strike has disrupted classes for 1,600 Students Students were to meet at the RISD auditorium at 10 this morning to review the events of the past two days and to decide what to do next Student leaders had been urging students to maintain a neutral stance in the dispute. Howev- er, a group of about eight students joined the faculty picket lines yesterday RISD and union officials were scheduled to meet in Boston this morning for a hearing before the National Labor Relations Board. The board issued a complaint against RISD for withholding faculty members’ pay last summer Key issues in the faculty strike are what control the school administration should have over outside professional work by the faculty and what procedures should be followed in reappointing or dismissing faculty Union and RISD officials gave different ac- counts of yesterday's five-hour bargaining ses- sion at the state Department of Labor at 220 Elmwood Ave. Union officials said the administration reject- ed two union contract proposals during the day, refused to submit one of its own and then walked out from the bargaining session without arranging for more talks. “We asked them to stay, but they left,”” said Robert F. Joy, business agent for the National Education Association Rhode Island (NEA RI), the faculty union's parent group A RISD official denied that the school's negotiators walked out of the negotiations, and said the session was called off by state and federal mediators. Joan T. Slafsky, head of RISD's news bureau, said that the administration made a “‘comprehen- sive and complete offer to fully resolve all of the issues of the contrac t,” but that union negotia- tors rejected parts of it. The specific points of the con- flict between faculty and adminis- tration are important, but an overview of the situation is vital. The points of dispute all have roots in a problem of distrust and disrespect toward the faculty on the part of the present administra- tion. The smaller, more specific com- plaints can be argued. What is impossible to argue is that the relationship between teacher and student is the heart of the educa- tional process, the basis of the institution. RISD should be a school, not a financial investment. The teachers, in a sense, are the lacampo, Anne M. school, the function of a good administration is to keep the col- lege operating smoothly. From my perspective, it is in the adminis- tration’s, in the college's best in- terest to listen to its faculty. The strike is going to leave behind it a different school, for better or for worse. The majority of students want, | believe, only to return to school as normal, to maintain the status quo. It is not that simple. The good things about RISD are not going to survive without a change in the administration's attitude. In a cli- mate of fear and distrust, the school will not continue to be a creative, nourishing atmosphere for young artists. GOSSELIN Journal-Bulletin Staff Writer PROVIDENCE — Negotiators for the Rhode Island School of Design and the union that represents its 35 part-time faculty members negoti- ated unsuccessfully for three hours yesterday, the third day of the strike at the 104-year-old art school. Meanwhile, the two sides took their dispute to students and the public. RISD vice president John A. Stevens issued a 2 4-page letter to students, describing the school’s contract offer to the union. A union official immediately labeled the let- ter a “misrepresentation” and “pro- paganda.” Negotiators for the administra- tion and the school's 80. full-time faculty members are scheduled to resume talks at 9:30 a.m. today after they broke off without report- ing progress Tuesday. Neither side would predict chances for a quick settlement. Part-time and full-time faculty members are represented by (he same union, National Educa- tion Association Rhode Island, in separate bargaining units. The strike is the. first in the college's history. IN HIS letter to the RISD student board, Stevens said the school is prepared to offer full-time faculty members 10 percent annual wage increases over three years, plus a $48,000 lump sum to be divided among the faculty by a joint com- mittee of the faculty and adminis- tration. Robert F. Joy, business agent for the faculty union, said that RISD tries to attract faculty members who practice the skills they teach. For example, it seeks practicing architects to teach architecture and working artists to teach art. But he said the school also wants to con- trol the faculty's outside work. Joy rejected Stevens’ assertion that the RISD administration turned down only one request for approval of outside work during the last contract. He said he knows about three cases in which requests were rejected in the last year. 304 305 Ms Mr Mr Dr. Mr Ms. Ms. Mr. Ms. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Dr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Ms. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. CATION « Faculty Members Strike at R.I. School of Design Faculty members at the Rhode Island School of Design went on strike last week after eight months of negotiations failed to produce a new contract. Ken Hunnibell, president of the college's faculty association, said a settlement was bei ng held up by “eight or nine items ’ that the ad- ministration offered as a ‘‘pack- age’ and would not negotiate sep- aralely. Included is a clause requiring faculty members to seek adminis- trative approval before engaging in outside professional activity, he said. Both sides are ‘fairly close on the issue of salaries, he said. Students have been marching in the picket line along with the school's 80 full-time and 35 part- time faculty members. The faculty association is affiliated with the National Education Association. . Yuriko S. Glaser—Liberal Arts . John D. Glasheen—Teacher Education . Josef W. Godlewski—Graphic Design M. Yoder—Architecture RISD, faculty reach ‘basic understanding’ PROVIDENCE — The adminis- tration and the union representing striking faculty at the Rhode Island School of Design have reached ‘‘ba- sic understanding” on a contract for some 80 full-time faculty mem- bers, Joan Slafsky, head of the RISD news bureau, announced to- day. Some technical language and drafting still have to be worked out, Mrs. Slafsky said. Both sides are still negotiating a contract for about 35 part-time faculty members, she added. On that contract, “there are still some issues that separate us.” ike oe ROBERT F. JOY, chief negotiator for the RISD Faculty Association, confirmed this morning that the two sides reached some “basic un- derstandings” on key issues in a 13- hour bargaining session that ended early this morning. Joy said he is optimistic that full agreement on a new contract for the full-time faculty can be reached either today or tomorrow. “However, that’s not the end of the problem at RISD,” he said. Joy said that the part-time faculty still have to negotiate a contract with the administration. A negotiating session was set for 11:30 am. today. Joy said he expected the full-time teachers would honor the picket lines of the part-time teach- ers even if the full-time teachers ratify a contract. The full-time and part-time teachers are represented by sepa- rate unions, but both unions fall under the umbrella of the National Education Association Rhode Is- land. The bulk of the negotiating has been on the full-time contract, Mrs. Slafsky said. One major sticking point in the negotiations has concerned outside work by full-time faculty members. Over the weekend the administra- tion compromised on its demand that faculty members receive prior approval from the school before performing outside professional work. The strike — the first by teach- ers in the school’s 104-year histo- ry — began April 5, halting classes for 1,600 students. xt wk oO EIGHT ISSUES REPORTEDLY were unresolved, with the two most important ones non-economic: the type of control the administra- tion should have over outside pro- fessional work by teachers, and the procedures to be followed when a teacher’s contract comes up for renewal. The school's Student Board urged students to take a “neutral posi- tion” on the strike, but also told them to honor picket lines and stay away from classes during the strike. Six students went further, joining their teachers on the picket lines. As the strike wore on, the sides seemed to move farther apart in- stead of closer. The union accused management of walking out on the negotiations; management accused the union of bargaining in bad faith. Each side denied the other's ac- cusation. 306 sa 1750 copies of this book were printed by Eastern Press Inc., New Haven, CT on 80 Ib. Warren's Lustro Offset Enamel Dull.
