Bailey, a teacher whose warmth and generosity, whose sense of humor and spirit of life has helped at least one of us to remember that same generosity and spirit in our own outlook and hopefully to live it. 1963: The Summer you arrived here to study, | recalled a Chinese proverb (Sung Dynasty, maybe): To build for a year, plant a garden; for a generation, plant a house; for a century, plant trees; but for an epoch, plant men. 1968: I’m sure it’s true; I’m sure it’s true: If their governance is right, the men will build a city, sculpture, painting, poems— and a garden, too.
