To Members of the Class of 1966: It gives me special pleasure to offer our best wishes to the members of the Class of 1966. Having entered R.I.S.D. together, we have learned much as we have become increasingly immersed in this college and its acts of self-renewal. To rehearse the history you and I have acted in this college for four years is super- fluous, for each of us stands witness to his own experience of it. Rather, there is need for reaffirming what has been constant among all the changes: notably, our celebration of creat ive thought and action; our insisting and re-insisting that art is not necessity, not gimmick, entertainment, therapy or game; and our enjoyment of uncommon satisfactions in discoveries valued for quality beyond any utility or expediency. For my part, I hope that each of you will find continued sustenance in those dedi- cations and that your example in the several communities where you shall reside and work will nurture respect and enjoyment for the arts in America. In that fur- ther triumph, which you shall be a life-time achieving, your college will fulfill the mandate of its founders and the purpose of its teachers. Albert Bush-Brown

the student with and relate him to the artistic and literary traditions of which he is in the process of becoming an integral part. From this temporary respite, the visitor must once again proceed to further levels of activity in design and endeavour. He can see the inner workings of one of the newest and most contemporary modes of “seeing’’—the discipline and technique of the photographic eye. He comes upon the rigorously scheduled and rigid training program of Freshman Foundation. He can glimpse briefly into the world of fabric, pins, and dummies of the Fashion De- partment, and he can walk among the work-desks to get some idea of the multi- plicity of the projects and the ideas that come within the reach of Graphic and Industrial Designers. On yet another level, he can view that discipline that is farthest from the chaos of the sculpture pit. This is the ordered, measured and geometric world of the Archi- tect. These designers in their jackets and ties appear as if they could never bring themselves to mingle, yet alone merge, with the denizens of the sculpture pit, or even remotely share similiar aims and ideals. Yet they do. Perhaps there is really no way that a stranger can resolve the curious dichotomy that he finds here. He is, after all, ““on the outside looking in.” It is this strange-yet-plausible environment that set us, the students, apart from the people that daily surround us. We are a part of that curious society, the Rhode Island School of Design, who strive for excellence, who strive to relate our aspira- tions and ideals to Design in a contemporary world. In this goal we are united. Frank Best
