DEAN FARNSWORTH who for thirty four years has devoted himself to the task of maintaining the physical assets, in the form of buildings and grounds and all things found therein, that make up the rhode island school of design. he has coped with all manner of student and faculty requests for items lost, strayed or nonexistent and managed to find, build or buy in answer. the walks are cleared in winter and the rooms are painted in the summer. no problem has proved too difficult for him to handle. this year MR.FARNSWORT H will retire from his position as superintendent of buildings and grounds. he will be missed by all of us. we take this opportunity to wish him well in the years to come. five MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT i speak on behalf of the trustees, the administration and the faculty. it is our earnest wish that the years ahead will see the hopes that you entertained at entrance fulfilled. what you do, what you become will be of continuing interest to us and our successors. your success will be our success. the reputation of the institution rests with its alumni. MCGRATH director of student association director of public relations director of development fund librarian nine one of the more curious phe- nomena you may have recog- nized at some point during your design education is the effect of repetitive cycles. a subtle but perceivable pattern of recurring sounds, or shapes, or events forms the framework of most good music, good design—even the universe itself. in a more prosaic vein, you may recognize a series of progres- sions that have brought you from elementary to junior high school, from freshman to senior, back to freshman and on to sen- CALVIN NICKERSON '50 PRESIDENT ALUMNI ior in college. right now you have ‘‘worked your way up to freshman” in the professional world. this is an important mile- stone because the cycles from here on are less formal—and even less predictable. much de- pends on your personal effort and skill in continuing this de- velopment process. risd and its alumni association, like you and other individuals, are subject to the cyclical effects of progress. the association is your link with the college and the many friends you’ve made during the past few years. be- yond that, each of us in the as- sociation reflects the character of the institution. groups, in the final analysis, are measured and evaluated in terms of individuals. congratulations on your achieve- ment and welcome to your new freshman status. risd itself is a freshman in the ranks of accred- ited colleges. we welcome you as alumni with the hope that your active help and support will add to the growing stature and maturity of the college.
