Address correspondence to Portfolio, Student Association Office, Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, Rhode Island DEDICATION THIS ISSUE of Portfolio is dedicated to MR. MATLACK PRICE, who is terminating thir- teen years of service with the Rhode Island School of Design. Mr. Price has spent a total of twenty-six years teaching, and his philosophy, the antithesis of indoctrination, is that of helping the undergraduate to learn. He is, in every sense, a gentleman and a scholar. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT EACH GENERATION of college students leaves something of itself in the institution. This something is not to be confused with the record in the Registrar’s office which is a measure of what has been received. The student and the class inherit a complex of attitudes and in turn modify these attitudes. In this way the students individually and collectively help to make the college tradition. What each class gives is not easily analyzed but that it is real and sometimes substantial is beyond question. The yearbook, being a creation of the class, will reflect this quality. It is to be hoped that this book may remind you of happy and profitable years spent within the college and that you can as an alumnus continue to exert an influence that will help those who will take your place. Of course you aren’t, for you, as new members of the Rhode Island School of Design Alumni Association, now join hands with us in strengthen- ing the “ties that bind” us to our college. We look to you, the largest graduating class since 1951, to aid in the growth of the Association. It is necessary, for the successful maintenance of an active, progressive alumni organization, to have your support. We, in turn, will do our utmost to instill the desire to return to the college, for in the revisitations to undergraduate scenes lies the stim ulation for activity, the spur to interest the coming alumni, our undergraduates. These few thoughts to start you off, will, we hope, provide sufficient encouragement to support our alumni program. So to you, Class of 1957, welcome! The problem began as the usual one in planning in which stated requirements are set as a guide and foundation for research. However, it was soon realized that a new approach to planning would be necessary if a logical solution was to be reached when planning so far in the future; an approach based on a thorough analysis and understanding of the basic needs of man. Research became a matter of questioning men of authority in profes- sions that are mainly concerned with the human being, i.e., sociologists, biologists, economists, scientists, doctors and psychologists. These men were invited from Columbia University, Massa- chusetts Institute of Technology, Brown Univer- sity, and the local medical profession, and their contributions acted as a catalylic for speculation. Thus a lively interest was engendered stimulating endless discussions which finally brought forth a new philosophy for planning the “American City of the Future”. Inherent in this philosophy was the belief that man’s basic needs and desires will not change in the future, but will also not be ruled as at present by his concern with mechanization, although technological change had a very impor- tant place in speculating about the future city. It became necessary to propose theoretical questions in order to invent a program to plan with. The fol- lowing five significant questions became apparent and a challenge for the senior planners to resolve. 1. How can man solve his innate relationship with nature through planning for the future and can this important relationship be realized by creating an ideal environment in which to live and work? 2. Why does man desire to live in a city, and what constitutes a desirable city? 3. What should be anticipated with a future atomic power in the economy and what will this new, clean power mean in planning living and working conditions? 4. Will the proper solving of the transportation system be a determining factor in creating the city’s ultimate form? 5. Should a city plan be designed as an organic growth structure which can be logically integrated with surrounding regions? Ultimately, the problem was one of visualizing the growth, change and development of a city for many decades and anticipating the many planning problems involved. Industrial areas were consid- ered to require, generally, less space because of the technological improvements and future use of atomic power. Present industrial nuisances were considered possible to eliminate. Recreational and cultural centers were given great importance because of assumed shorter work-week and con- sequently more leisure hours. Business districts were conceived as economic forums. Residential areas were developed with garden settings. The expansion of existing park facilities and problems of urban transportation were considered of prime importance. The aims of the plan were to create an organized decentralization without destroying the idea of a city considered basic. Thus the city took on a cellular character growing by establish- ing new nuclei-areas extending the city indefinitely. And also to create an environment in which human beings can control the great amount of technical paraphernalia at his disposal making the city serve man and at the same time be a beautiful, pleasur- able and exciting experience for its residents. PROFESSOR J. CAROL FULKERSON 49 Photographs of the Test Community Exhibition ARCHITECTURE: CONTINUED TEST COMMUNITY EXHIBITION A NEW SYNTHESIS, one which will make whole what is now separate, a search for a greater unity of our en- vironment fostering a highly integrated community spirit bolstered by new con- victions —- This was the basis of the program for the design of a Test Com- munity undertaken by the fifth year architects this year under the direction of Professor Ernst Lichtblau. Several of the solutions of the com- munity plan are shown (opposite) and though different, each exemplifies a homogeneous character and a feeling for complete unity. The core is the com- munity center, the focus of the planned housing built organically around it. This housing was designed using the industrial methods of prefabrication whereby interchangeable component parts of building construction could be used for different types of buildings such as single, row houses or craft studio apartments. The encompassing aim of the test community was to pre- sent an atmosphere of comfort and quality which would demonstrate the grade of civilization of our country. ALBERT E. MORRIS’ BS: Machine Design 57 60 TAKE A BREAK WEEKEND AT THE RHODE ISLAND SCHOOL OF DESIGN when the time arrives for Take A Break weekend, held this year on February 15th, 16th, and 17th, the air is virtually charged with a variety of things, among them being excitement and enthusiasm. Friday evening a dance was held at the Narragansett Hotel; music was furnished by Tony Abbott, with Eileen Rodgers as guest vocalist. At midnight the eight candidates for Take A Break Queen — Pidge Larson and Ginny Pfaff, °57, Betsy Crankshaw and Gretchen Weiffenbach, ’58, Bea Turek and Betty Seely, 59, and Gwen Walford and Laura Shanklin, 60 — assembled on the bandstand, where George De Crosta an- nounced Ginny Pfaff as Queen. The theme of the variety show was “Color Carnival”. The faculty chose to tempcrarily regress in an unusual musical presentation, and the dancers, under the direction of Ed- mund Gerhart, gesticulated and smiled in a manner quite suitable to their parts. From the orchestra pit floated the “new sounds” of Art Love and the school band, while Sue Phelps and Phil Shriver gave unique inter- pretations as masters-of-ceremonies. Still more dancing at the Narragansett followed the show. Mid-evening interest was centered upon Congdon Dormitory, which was awarded a trophy for the best dormitory skit. On Sunday afternoon the fine classical re- vival atmosphere of Memorial Hall was brought up to date with the jazz of Manny Denize, who appropriately enough ended the whole affair with a rendition of the theme from “The Man With The Golden Arm”. It is safe to say that none of this could have been possible without the endeavors of Lee Poisson, chairman, and his committee. They deserve much appreciation for a series of events that few will forget. 61 64 JOHN J. MULLEN, JR. BFA: Apparel Design JAMES V. RISD THEATRE (page 94): On November 16th and 17th the Rhode Island School of Design under- graduate Drama Organization presented it’s production of Euripides’ classic, “Helen”. An exercise in humorous satire, it was both a critical and financial success. All who worked to bring it to life were richly rewarded and many returned with the same enthusiasm to work on the second production of the year, Pirandello’s “Naked”. JAZZ CONCERT (page 95): “Jazz at RISD”, the first concert of its kind at the college, was presented on December 18th in the auditorium, where Art Love and his band offered a variety of musical tastes. Between the big sounds and the small group sounds was an interlude of banjos and a satire on Christmas. 93 ae , a wee Beat eae Hk Stand ed 96 WILLIAM R. TIPPLE JOAN B.
