This Plantation is dramatically situated on a commanding hill overlooking the Ashley River. Built in 1714, two years later square forts were added at the 4 corners of the house for protection against Indians. As the land slopes from the house to the river, there is a sheltered terraced oarden and in the midst of azalea bloom stands a sundial with the follow- ing inscription: “Secure, | stand among the flowers And only count the sunny hours — Dark days for me do not exist I'm a brazen-faced old optimist. Although half of the time you have spent in college has been a time of war, your School has endeavored to provide for your needs and prepare you well. Today our joint responsibilities to the world are Creat. Tomorrow they will be no less. If we are to meet these responsibilities, we must pledge our- selves to a pattern of action that leads to cooperation based upon faith in each other. Thus the bond between you Alumni and the School will be a living symbol ot the unity of the world so desired by all free men. The College Building of The Rhode Island School of Design picturesquely mounts the steep slope of College Hill and houses be- hind its Colonial exterior of brick and stone the business and administrative officers, with the majority of upperclassmen allocated to well-lighted studios, laboratories and class- rooms. Here, too, is our handsome and well- stocked reference and working library, beauti- fully finished in teakwood. RHODE, [SAS This pleasing bit of formal gardening is hidden away from the street by the surrounding museum. buildings. With- in the Museum are splendid collections of arts and crafts from ancient Egypt to the 20th century. In adjoining Pendle- ton House, which is a part of the Mu- seum, complete interiors recreate the the elegance and graciousness of 18th Century Colonial America. The Mu- seum of the Rhode Island School of Design continuously sponsors exhibi- tions and lectures of outstanding signili- cance. Here, in the Waterman Street build- ing, the Rhode Island School of Design began its life in 1886. Today it is still dedicated to budding careers, for in its studios and design laboratories the Freshman are Given a_ progressive approach to design, officially known as the Foundation Course. Whatever de- partment he may enter in his sopho- more year, the Freshman will never forget the old Waterman Street build- ing, and all that he learned there. The School Farm, in Foster Rhode Island, is the scene of many an under- graduate picnic and outing. Its two hundred and twenty acres allow room enough for skiing and snow parties in. winter, with good cheer and Sames by wood fires indoors. With milder weather the same acreage allows room enough for all the outdoor brush- wielders we have, to do all the painting and sketching they want—without jog- ging each other's elbow. eNOS SHE NTIONIN Gilets) lAlils) Ok W Sy President — Sally Brine Vice-President — Lilyan Sumners Secretary — Jane Liddell Treasurer — Mary Ella Fletcher Class Advisor — Matlack Price Social Director — Gilbert Franklin In October 1943, as we registered for our first year at college, we looked forward with anticipation to the new experience that lay before us. We were honored with a tea conducted for the freshmen by the upper classmen. Due to the war time restrictions, social events were few and far between, however we did manage a scavenger hunt. We elected as class officers: President, Emma Thurber; Vice-President, Barbara Barry; Secretary, Mary Fletcher; Treasurer, Barbara Goulding. As Sophomores, alter much deliberation, we entered our chosen departments, where we would spend the next few years. This year we elected as our class officers: President, Cynthia Norton; Vice-President, Allen Johnson; Secretary- Treasurer, Raymond Simoneau. Many from our class performed in the Talent show, contributing toa highly successtul entertainment. Our Junior year was highlighted by the return of veterans, some to finish their interrupted education and others to begin their studies as freshmen. We had almost forgotten that our school was co-ed. We joined the various activities such as the camera club, swimming club, dances and events at the school farm. Our class officers were: President, Thomas Maloney; Vice-President, Lili Ragnell; Secretary- Treasurer, Allen Johnson. In September, 1946, as we ascended College Hill, we looked back on our former years and at the same time wondered what the future would hold. At the beginning of the year we held a Harvest Ball, the profits of which went towards the year book. It was the most successful dance held in many years. We settled down to do our theses while others assigned themselves the task of preparing suitable porttolios of their work. We also found time to indulge in the various activities offered by the Student Union and other classes. Now with the approach of our Graduation we plan to hold a Commencement Ball to climax an eventtul four years. A Report of the Activities of the Student Union and Council The Student Union opened its 1946 program with a tea for the Freshmen to meet the faculty of the school in Memorial Hall. Plenty of tea, coffee and cookies were consumed as the Freshman enrollment this year was 205 and the upperclassmen were also there in full force. The dormitory girls acted as hostesses, and very pretty they were too... as well as very tired by 6 P. M. On September 21 the Union sponsored a picnic to the Cranberry Hill school farm for the Freshmen. Three buses, filled with enthusiastic picnickers left the Cityveatel mee Mi: The weather was far trom pleasant, but the ardor of the Freshmen was undampened as pictures on the Mixing Bowl page will prove. There was a solt ball ogame between the girls and men that should eX) down in the annals of school history, (the sirls won!). The climax was a traditional New England Saturday night bean supper with hot dogs and all the fixin’s. Everyone agreed it had been a fine day as they limped from the buses at 6 P. M. - Several other teas were held under the auspices of the Student Union during Freshman Week. One was for the veterans and their very attractive wives in Pendleton House, and another for the upperclassmen to meet the Museum staff and the new members of the faculty. A series of outstanding foreign and American films was sponsored by the Union for its members, including “Lifeboat”, “Berkeley Square , “Young Mr. Pitt’, “The Young Mr. Lincoln’, “Carnival in Flanders’, “Jane Eyre , “Keys of the Kingdom” and “The Pied Piper’. November was an important month for the Student Union, as it was responsible for the forming of the first Athletic Association in the history ot the school, and paved the way with a oift for the intramural basketball league. Interest in this sport has been keen during the winter and spring months, and the men responded to this activity with enthusiasm. On December 17 the Student Council acted as agents for the Union and planned and ran a tree formal Christmas dance for all of the students in the school. It was beautifully executed and chock-full of holiday spirit with half a dozen large tinsel covered Christ- mas trees forming a setting for the orchestra and a ceiling canopy of red and white crepe paper. The committee thought of everything, including mistletoe, and the evening was filled with laughter, gaiety and beautiful girls. What more could be asked for! January brought the pool tournament and it was discovered that there are some pretty fancy pool sharks swimming around these buildings. Wally Roche won with Leon Morday runner-up. It was a tough fight and we didn't envy Mr. Farnsworth or Mr. Ferry who were the referees. There was a Winter Carnival at the school farm on January 18 for Student Union mem- bers, planned by the Student Council, and while there was no snow to tempt the skiing fans, there was plenty of activity to keep all 162 ouests busy. Two treasure hunts carried half of the people off on orueling trails laid, we think, by Boston Blackie. They both ended at Frankie Manera, and the weary but dauntless winners were given tickets to one of the local theatres. The famous orange relay was run again, and Engman, Thrane and Lane presented the sight of the year trying to array themes tee in wouvdlae. and we mean complete, femi- nine Sarva heal Se blindfolded. Bonfires were built in the fields adjoining the house and the more rugged sat around them alter supper (beans and franks again!) singing, while the oarden variety sat around the fireplaces inside, singing. At 7 P. M. everyone took the buses (or got lost in their own cars) and went over to the Moosup Town Grange, which had been reserved for the occasion and there was a hilarious evening of square dancing. By 10 P. M. the day had definitely ended and the long trek home began It was a eon dertal crowd, a wonderful day and something pleasant for the memory book. Perhaps one of the most appreciated oilts donated to the school by the Union is the record changing machine, which has been in use continually by students interested in symphonic music, and for informal dancing. Practically every noon hour a group oathers in the Ladies Faculty Room to listen to records, many of them foreign recordings of the London, Berlin and Madrid Symphony Orchestras, loaned by Mrs. Noble. As well as carrying on its own full program the Student Union helped the clubs and classes of the school to carry on theirs successtully. Loans to the extent of $194 were sranted by the Council for these activities and the Union gave vilts totalling $780 to charitable organizations, the Athletic Association and the Senior Class Year Book. All money spent on Student Union activities came from the dues of students who paid a Student Fee at the opening of the Fall semester. Any student in the school was eligible to join and over 400 students were active members. More students have participated in all types of activities due to the fact that the Student Council, as a governing body for the Student Union has been on its toes. There has been a closer bond between the students of all departments due to intra-mural activities sponsored 2 the Union, and a warm feeling of college spirit. Suddenly, to these aspiring artists, a light shone brightly they were no longer high school students, but part of the student body of the Rhode Island School of Design. They were the class of 1948. Our classes consisted mostly of sirls, as the boys were serving their country in the armed forces. Although we managed to survive “S.O.S.” or freshman week, and we had three representatives in the queen s court, Leila Chiles, Carol Whorf, and Sheila Black. Our sophomore year was one of adjustment. We were no longer “oreen freshmen, and our classes had enlarged by the return of many veterans. We were happy to have them back and we realized their value to the school and all its activities, curricula, as well as extra-curricula. Churchill House was the scene of our Spring Frolic when enthusiasm for class interests became more apparent. Thanks should be given to those who were our Sophomore Class officers: President, Barbara Crowe, Vice President Alice Fromuth, Treasurer, ea Feeney, and Secretary Elizabeth Kvaratzhelia. Class officers really do a job. This season, the Junior class adopted the Lil’ Abner theme, and the boys and girls assembled in Memorial Hall, in blue jeans and pigtails, a la Daisy Mae, to make merry at the Lower Slobbovia Ball, at which Lena, the Hyena reigned supreme who would dare to compete with her? Our class is planning a Junior Prom in the spring, and with an eye toward our senior year, we are now collecting class dues. And now we say soodbye. Good Luck, Seniors, may you all be successful. We hope that next year we will be able to do as good a job as you have done. G. H. M: 5. UVMOrs ay A aie paves SOE 1a tO) MMOPIR Te Cibvavishsy Inlllsy OUR Ve NS President — Frederic Allen Vice President — Walter Roche Secretary — Sue Gleason Treasurer — William Collins To most of us our Freshman year was a novel, and, therefore, an interesting phase in our lives. Who can forget the trepidation with which he entered his first “‘life’”’ class, the flurry of excitement attending the first college dance, or the orand realization when June came that he had made it? It might have been a little difficult at first for those of us who had been learning the arts of war to suddenly change to studying the arts of peace, but conquering that difficulty served as an impetus which led to some fine results. This was particularly evi- dent in the work of the all veteran class which entered in January and continued throughout the summer in order to catch up to the Freshman class which had entered the previous September. Although the class sponsored but one dance, which can be said to have been successful socially if not financially, our social life was not neglected for we could be found helping to support all school activities. Last September 207 students registered for their Sophomore class, the largest class ever to attend the School of Design. During the first weeks we made many friends in our own departments but we didn't forget those friends who, for various reasons, had been unable to return. It was during those first weeks that we realized that, although much of the work in our departments was new to us, those seemingly “unnecessary | Freshman subjects had Siven us a solid fou ndation for our specialized studies. As this is written, the class has had time to do little more than plan its activi- ties for the coming year but the success of any undertaking is assured for last year s Freshmen are this year s Sophomores. Ran X shen Ps ‘. fe ‘a FRESHMAN CUBA S) Tells) COUR We ee ee President — Robert Henneberger Vice President — Norma Baker Secretary — Barbara Smith Treasurer — Nancy Dale The students comprising the entering class of 1946 had to overcome obstacles that would make the ordinary applicant blanche with anticipation. Members of the class of 1950 have shown a fine spirit from the beginning. They seem to be conscious of how important the foundation they are laying here is to them. They seem constantly trying to outdo one another and as a result the standard of their work is maintained at an ever heightening level. Yet they have found to laugh with and at both themselves and one another. They have found time to be good friends and participate in the many extra-curricular activities. At the first assembly they found they had come a long way to join their class. Such far places as Java, Nicaragua, Norway and Canada were mentioned as well as many of our own United States. For awhile there it looked like a sub- sidiary of the U.N. Council. They went as strangers to their first picnic and came back friends. Appar- ently they liked what they had seen and heard of each other for that week they got down to the business of electing officers. They became avidly interested in the various clubs offered by the school. In years past there had been a ski-club at the school, but it was on the shelf when last year s freshmen arrived. Not to be denied this pleasure they set about and organized it. Who will soon forget the ‘Ski Carnival’ they introduced to earn money to help defray the expense of a trip to the slopes. They participated with upper classmen in “The Late Christopher Bean’, the drama club's first play of the year, and the stage crew for that show was composed almost entirely of freshmen. Some of them became involved in the Christmas play and the Glee Club. All of those students having a hand in those two productions deserve a hearty ‘well-done . The Athletic Organization was sponsored and carried into being by the mem- bers of the Freshman Class before it was offered to the School for what it was worth. I checked with some of those fellows and found they met twice a week for their basketball games, and | am told that some of them are better than average. Predictions for the months to come? The class is still in its infancy but growing with gusto and spirit and it seems worthwhile to keep your eyes on it. | may seem a trifle proud of this class of 1950 — but after all — I’m one of them.
