IN MEMORIAM N MONDAY afternoon, April 9th, the Head of our Cos- tume Department, Miss Grace Wilson Ripley, died suddenly. She has left a vacancy that cannot be filled. Her wide knowl- edge, her wider interests, her deep regard for her students made the rooms where she worked places of inspiration and wisdom. She was a teacher whose field was constantly growing broader. Her enthusiasm for dress and all its social and esthetic values, her love of beautiful color and sweeping lines, her wide-awake knowledge of her own subject as it is related to the life about her was as keen and as thorough as her love for the archaic and beautiful classic draperies, and the rich quality of oriental robes. But the boundaries of her mind did not stop there. She loved painting and sculpture and music. She read Plato and Aristotle. She filled in any spare moments in wide reading and thorough research. The last weeks of her life, and even the last hours, were dedi- cated to the welfare of her students, all of whom she loved as friends and as individuals. We shall not forget her. MESSAGES FROM LTLHE PRES yee [No “No SNe ONS Castle Hot Springs Hotel Castle Hot Springs, Arizona March 25, 1945 EAR GRADUATING CLASS: Your letter was forwarded to me here in Arizona, and I wished that you were here to share my recreation. From the moment you turn off the main highway and drive twenty- four miles, winding around extinct volcanoes, covered with desert cactus, you are in a different world—‘‘out of this world”. Sequoia cactus that look like Steig drawings, rise up everywhere, in their weird shapes, and everywhere there is an infinite variety of other cactus for ground cover. Castle Hot Springs itself is an oasis in this desert, with palms and pepper- trees, water and green grass— 7 Most of all, I would like you to go on these rides—to places like Burro Basin, Hell Gate, Fort Misery and Spring Valley—places at the back of beyond, and way up on the top of the world, where mountains and wide horizons are spread out before you, and man seems so small. Every rise you climb keeps you breathless, wondering what is on the other side— The “hollows are plumb full of hush to the brim,” and always there is “beauty and wonder and peace”. May a breath of this beauty and wonder come to you, accompanied by the Arizona sun and air and “Good luck have thou with thine honore’”— Faithfully, HELEN M. DANFoRTH meee CU FIVE VICE PRESIDENT EAR GRADUATES: I well remember with what trepidation I departed from the professional school in Boston where I had experi- enced four of the happiest years of my educational life. How I wished I had given more attention to the opportunities that were mine. I was faced with my limitations and only I knew how many there were. You know how I felt. Now as I look back I have developed a deep sense of appreciation for my school and above all else for the Faculty with whom I came in contact. What a fine group of friends they were, and still are, those who still live. I like to think of you, too, growing professionally but always thinking of R.I.S. D. and the good Faculty with better understanding and increas- ing loyalty, knowing that they also are your friends who measure their success in your achievements. Congratulations, best wishes and great strength to you in meeting the world’s work. Don’t forget that “He who hesitates is bossed”’. Roya. B. It is an intricate process to record our history, for it originates from many sources and thus has not been a unit. We are not different from other classes of this war-world. Acceleration has advanced some, retarded some, and even discouraged some; but the decreeing hand has been steadied by the promising present and normalcy finds the class of 46 slightly small numerically, yet exceedingly interested mentally. It is difficult to describe our past, for not all members have known the same events. The World War II has not only affected private lives, but also school life, in that it demanded many of the students for more important work, thus temporarily limiting any and all possibilities and desires. But now that the prospect of a stable curriculum is a near reality, school activities are materializing. That is why ours is a present history— a record of the past year—a story of War Bonds, swimming, plays, class rings, dances, Canteen, Glee Club, assemblies, student council participa- tion, and a pleasant coffee hour. Yes, we have been busy, but we have been lonely, too; lingering on tales of the past and the might have been. However, they are gone and now we look forward to a future certainty and we are thankful. Violet McCluskey TA ESS.O 2 20 MORES Gases EGISTRATION DAY on the 18th of October, 1943, found a very large number of assorted Freshman students excitedly filling in program cards. The very same number emerged quite alive, and even unscathed from a rip-roaring initiation week. A more dignified event, also traditional, was a Freshman tea given in the school Library in our honor. We all had a delightful time, and met upper classmen and faculty members, whom we tried to impress, needless to say. We held our first class meeting, and elected the following officers: President, Emma Thurber; Vice-President, Barbara. Barry; Secretary, Mary Fletcher; Treasurer, Barbara Goulding. Because of war time restrictions, and the departure of many of our friends and brothers to the armed forces, our social activities were some- what limited. Therefore, after a Scavenger Hunt party, we settled soberly down to an interesting and profitable year in the Freshman Foundation and Freshman work in the Textile and Engineering Departments. All of us—almost all of us—treturned eagerly on October 21, 1944 to begin our Sophomore year. These officers took ove r: President, Cynthia Norton; Vice-President, Allen Johnson; Secretary-Treasurer, Raymond Simoneau. No social activities wholly our own have been held, but we rallied enthusiastically round at the two School Dances this winter. We covered ourselves with glory at the Student Talent Program, having the majority of performers taken from our midst, and also the chairman and Master of Ceremonies. The last and most pleasant occasion of all was the Coffee Hour in our honor given by Dr. and Mrs. Farnum. P.S. We hear there is another dance in the offing. SEN TO-R= CLASS. cis ie HE SIXTY-FIFTH year of the Rhode Island School of Design opened on September 17, 1942 with a freshman class of 100 stu- dents. It was the very same year in which was announced that a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree had been instituted in the curriculum of the school and the oh, so jolly frosh looked at four years of college life with anticipation. The following Friday the class was honored at the traditional reception and tea in the museum galleries. This was only the first of a host of exciting social activities. There was a Halloween Dance for the dormi- tory students, “Midsummer Night’s Dream’, presented by the senior class, and a “Snow Spree” saw the crowning of a queen. Still, we have been anxious not to overlook our place in a war-torn world. We have fitted art education into a pattern of war-emergency. Camouflage classes, cartography courses, war poster exhibitions, and an official notice that the school was now accepted for the Army-Navy Enlisted Reserve Program, are only a few highlights of our part in our country’s fight for freedom. On January 6, 1943, with the opening of the second semester, it was announced that the school was to operate on a year-round basis. The opening of the summer school in June was preceded by a fashion show which gave us a glimpse of things to come. Striking and dynamic were the modern dances interpreted by the kinesthetics group. Busy days flew by and before we could catch our breath we were full- fledged juniors, trotting merrily through another summer of work and play. There were assembly programs to be planned, student plays and exhibitions, and last but not least, there were our duties as nurses aides and canteen hostesses. We have seen the school of which we are all so proud expand. The new Congdon Street dormitory is a delightful place for long hours away from home, and the Prospect House, which was purchased in the fall of 1944, is already an established part of our campus. Today, as we look back at a successful college career, we can only thank you, our parents and our teachers, for having given us such a wonderful opportunity for work and play. May the years which lie ahead of us be as fortunate as the ones which have just passed. We were back for a long winter’s work. The officers elected during the summer term to serve for the next two terms were: Malcolm Case, President; Anna Tefft, Vice-President; Walter Charboneau, Treasurer; Marilyn Johnson, Secretary. Mathew Siok was chosen chairman of committees. Marilyn went off to California early in January and changed her name to Manning, so Eleanor Harbst was elected Secretary pro tem. Department elections were held and the Student Council convened. The advisors were elected—Miss Bates, Miss Pope, and Mr. Hurd. To them we owe most faithful guidance. We gathered on Wednesdays at one o’clock in Room 412. The attend- ance was generally very good. The routine business was somewhat obscured by the numerous private discussions being held. Mr. Hurd finally suggested that we conform to Parliamentary Law. We did this and now comparative peace reigns over the meetings. With the Freshman Class so over-powering in number, we all thought it advisable to give its members a warm welcome. They were properly initiated. Just ask one of them how! However, not wanting to leave behind memories too harsh, a “48 Ball” was sponsored by the Student Council in honor of the entering class. Maybe you cafeteria habitues noted that a new table tennis set was admitted to your midst. Thanks are due to Mr. Farnsworth and the men of the carpenter shop for the building of the table and to the boys of the Student Council for locating the set. In February we sponsored another dance—the ‘‘Snow Spree”. Previous to the dance elections were held for a queen: Pat Walker won. She was presented to the company and crowned, surrounded by decorations of icicles and snowmen. Both dances were successes. We found the stage a novel setting for a dance, yet convenient and pleasant. On the more serious side of the fence, the Council voted financial aid to various causes. The Freshmen received a small sum to help pay for their dance; the Glee Club, under the direction of Miss Pope, was given financial support. Money was also donated to the World Student Service Fund and to the Red Cross. Under the leadership of Mary Parker we sported a war bond drive, having as our goal a jeep. The classes ran against each other on a per- centage basis. The Juniors set a good example by going way over the top. It was voted to raise the Student Fee to two dollars—a dollar toward the year book and the other dollar for student activities. An additional dollar and a half was to be paid when the year book was received. There is a Student-Faculty Relationship Committee, the student members being elected from the Council. This committee seeks to work out improvements for the school. One such project was working out a suggested revision of the Student Council Constitution. A school song book and a school manual are in preparation. The year is nearly finished. Many of our friends will not be returning. The Council hopes to be more and more active in student life. When you see a Council Key, stand by and give its wearer support. CEASS OF 1944 OF THE MEN IN THE ARMED FO, HE MEASURE of the value we set on our years at the Rhode Island School of Design is at the same time a measure of regret that many of those who started as Freshmen with us could not stay to enjoy and profit from the school as we have. In a way this yearbook belongs to them—Seniors Apparent—as much as it does to us, seniors in fact,— and we hope that when their sacrifice of time and strength is completed, and their courageous duty done, those who can will come back to years of serviceable learning as happy and exciting as our own.
