Sewell We wish to dedicate this, our third issue of the Patroon, to William Sewell, assistant principal, science teacher and general good-will ambassador between students and teachers. We thank you, Uncle Bill, for helping us plan our school programs so as to derive the most benefit from them, for enlightening us on some of the mysteries of science, even for chastizing us when we broke the rules, but most of all we thank you for being available whenever we needed a friend and advisor. CLEO E. FICKE Clan fldfuisor Thirteen Fourteen Senior History Four years ago, we, the Seniors of '51, were the Green Freshmen of '47. We boldly crossed the threshold of 'lYe Olde R. H. S., thinking that at last we were big shots. However, we were rudely shaken from our ethereal pedestal by the majestic upper classmen. Do you remember our Science Class expedition to the Hayden Planetarium and the Museum of Natural History? It was on this memorable occasion that Doris Bowman was hilariously initiated into the confusion of the Big City. Our sophomore year was heralded 'by our Christmas Dance, The Sophomore Spree. Do you recall our tree decorated with painted tin-cans, which Jay Sellers accidentally nailed to the shining surface of the gym floor? Also, it is impossible to forget our own talented Gerry Murphy in the minstrel show. The oomph and style, which he put into his song and dance routine, brought down the house with laughter and applause. ' One year later, we achieved Jolly Junior-hood during which we proudly presented our unforgettable Junior Prom. Two of our Juniors, Ronnie Post and Peggy DeLamater, copped the honors and were crowned King and Queen. It was many days before the King could shake off the label Pretty Boy which Mr. Cullen had bestowed on'him. , - ln Feb. of this same, year, we attained our long awaited class rings. We dis- played these shining school emblems with pride. 1 At last we. reached the goal for which we had been struggling 'these many years. This year wie, The Royal Seniorsf' had much to look forward to. 1 After three preceding years of unsuccessful attempts, we finally became masters in the art of selling. A steady income was derived from candy, soda, food and shirt sales. What about B. Dalmer's unique costumes and routines, which he produced for advertisement's sake? He certainly was the focus of attentionl' And don't forget The Count of Monte Cristo and Guadalmnal Diary which starred in our two successful movie-dances. The G. O. presidential campaign was battled out by Richard Moe Siebold, Gerry Murphy and Ronnie Post. Not only the students but also the town was aroused as Gerry's loyal party formed a parade and rode around town with banners Hying. After the votes were counted, it was found that a revote was necessary between Moe and'Gerry. Aloe won the election, and the other nominees gave a party in the honor, of the new president. The Senior Play entitled Junior Mister starred Harold Hastings, alias Gerry Price's family, whom he considered reasons for much mirth. Frances, helped to reform Harold by using from the clutches of Gloria, better Murphy, who wrote a play about 'lFrances characters, His many predicaments were the character, played by Margie Rogers, psychology. She successfully snatched him known as Joan Sindt. Although we worried about our Hnanoial status, Lady Luck was with us, and in March, We took our much dreamed about trip to Washington, D. C. This was one of the greatest highlights of our senior year. In June, 1951, we reached the end of a long, hard journey. We proudly ac- cepted our diplomas and realized that the hardest job was yet to come-the job of putting our education: to practical use and proving ourselves worthwhile citizens. Class Will We, the Seniors of the class of 1951, being of questionably sound mind, do hereby make, publish and declare this, our last will and testament and do give, and bequeath all our effects and defects both real and personal as follows: We leave Barbara White Bill Asher's argumentive abilities. B. jfs dramatic talent to Anne Kaufman. Doris Bowman's spontaneous giggles to Shirley Bonesteel. To Pat Wheeler, Peggy DeLamater's quick temper. Joan Galunas' typing ability to Charles Forsman. The outstanding and numerous possessions of Don Goodrich, we leave to Bill Lown. Pat Hart's untamed locks to Sandy Tremper. Walt Jautz's faculty drag to Ann Stickel. To Ginny Rifenburg and Rosemary Briggs, Bea Merrihew's athletic ability. Carl Johnson's uppers to Ginny Ross. Jerry Murphy's innumerable talents to Margie Goodrich. Bucky Odell's repertoire of jokes to Eleanor Justus. Mary Smith's petite figure to Mary Jane Kilmer. To Jim Rosell and Stan Colton, Dick Hicks' frequent blushes. Joan Sindt's specks to Ruth Ackert. We leave Howie Traudt's basketball skill to Jonathan Murray. To Ed Gray and Ann Conklin, Frank Dezago's garrulousness. Walt Welch's muscle-bound physique to Tom McCabe and Carl Harrison. . Walt Williams' history marks to Ed Glynn. Ed Gumienny's love of minstrel shows to Bernie Lattin and Gordie Briggs. Jo Ann KyH's naivete is left to Mary Meccariello. Margie Rogers' height to Pat Rosell. Jo Simmons leaves her quiet ways to Dorie Ann Stone and Don Harrison Dick Siebold'S mathematical mind to Ray De lVIolin and Marlene Dorrer. Ronnie Post's crewcial cut to Satch Gazen. Sissy Simmons' copper-colored hair to Bill Holden so that next year's Seniors won't be without a red-head. Dick Thorn's dancing feet to Sally Asher. To Paul Johnson, Ed Rossman's extra weight. Grace Fulford's seriousness is left to Betsy Bridges. John McCarney's way with the women to Stanley Ward. To the faculty we leave . . . it isn't much, but we leave and you should be thankful. Clear the trackl The Green flag has just been dropped on the 'fClass of 1952 VVait a minute, we don't need anyone to clear the track for us, we do it the hard way, around the outside of the track like the champions do. Speaking of champs, we have some. The boys of our class help to make up the Junior Varsity and Varsity basketball squads. llighty fine players, those fellows. They wouldn't be so line if they didn't have the school spirit that is aroused by the cheerleaders, some of whom are Juniors. Our Htlunior Quickief, Overall Hopl' and Prom had record breaking crowds. The payoffs weren't very large but the people went away content with the eveningjs events. Food sales were more popular than ever before this year, so the Juniors put their hands in the cake too. The results? A few pennies and headaches for the treasurer. If you ever meet any talent scouts around here, tell them about the talent our class has. They are sure to find a star. We have dancers, singers, actors-any number of talents. At last the checkered flag has been dropped on the school term of l95l. VVe had fun winning the races against our fellow classmen. Being pressed for time, we immediately began rehearsals. 'lihese provided excellent excuses for going out on school nights and neglecting homework. They also provided opportunities for clowning. Take, for instance, the time someone accidentally dropped a milkbottle backstage and then told Mrs. Ficke that HB. J. had broken his glasses. Remember those often-rehearsed love scenes between ull. sl. and KIargie which never failed to interest the whole cast? Only Art for Art's sake of course! ! ! ! Rehearsals were not the only excuses we found to get out of school-work, for there were those four-hundred or so programs to be planned, printed, cut, stapled, and painted which, of course, took a considerable amount of time. liven though we enjoyed doing all this, we uere quite grievious at the thought of missing our cherished classes! F E lnevitably, the big night arrived. There was much counting of the people in the audience, lat-minute line studying, primping, and protesting directed at our two make-up artists, Klrs. Ficke and Mir. Bainbridge. Surprisingly enough, things ran smoothly except for a few minor upsets including the time Gloria forgot her line and, thinking it was Miss Hamilton! was not the' least bit abashed by the frantic prompters giving her her line. The result was that no one said anything for what seemed like hours. Another slip-up which received one of the biggest laughs of the show was Frances Hut Jerry- instead of using his stage name! As the final curtain descended, we heaved a sigh of relief but already felt pangs of sadness. We were ready to begin all over again! Howeverfnot the same night, for we were all pretty worn out from nervousness and the great emotional strain of our unparalleled acting! ? And so we departed-tired, happy, and financially secure. Thirty :xx 'flzirty-sz'-w The Senior Trip W in M.a,,.3 It was a sleepy-eyed Senior Class that left for Washington about six-thirty A. M. Wednesday, llflarch twenty-first. However, as the day brightened, so did most of the voyagers. We arrived in HThe Nation's Ca ital at five-thirtv read' and rarin' to o. P . 5 g After unpacking and changing our clothes we started out in various directions to find places to eat and discuss plans for the evening. The next few days were spent on sightseeing and various interesting explora- tions fboth inside and outside of the hotell. Items for Remembrance--The seemingly mile-long hike up the VVashington Monument which we bravely undertook! The entertainment provided by a group of small Negro boys who fought for the pennies we pitched lsome of which landed on the roof below us and were retrieved by our fellow students-Guimmy and Jautzj. Are you a sailor?', Cshouted, of course, at a soldierj which was begun by our own Doris Bulldog Bowman and lasted throughout the trip. The laughs which re- sulted when lWrs. Shawhan unexpectedly dropped in on room 503. Frank-quick- get under the bed! in The eventful night which ended in a slop-tight between the young ladiesu in rooms 503 and 504 and the resulting involuntary migration of Mickey to room 503. The poker games on the second floor which lasted until the wee hours of the morning. We understand they drained many bottles too-Coke, of course! l The acquaintances we made and the fun we had with the kids from O-hee-0. Remember l, 2, 3 Sleep and Paul, the boy who got sick on milk? The pail We left in front of the hotel, the honeymoon couple who wanted quiet, Posty's reluctancy to go to bed, Bill Asher's fashionable efflorescent necktie, the midnight struggles with wild men, the sober attitude of Richard Hicks, the friendly and sometimes crooked porters, Joan Gfs illness and her faithful visitors, the trouble we gave the House Detective--he sure got mad-'fY'all bettah quiet down in theah! , the fun we had on the way home in the bus and the fake nose and glasses which B. bought. We finally arrived home on Nlonday about two-thirty A. M. half asleep, slightly bewildered, extremely weary but definitely willing to begin all over again. Thirty ezght Thirty-ninv Junior Prom Forty e!.ll1.l.L1..l.l The Class of '5l, after much of the usual planning and consideration, began to decorate the gym for its Junior Prom. Some of the Juniors were excused from their classes and others regretfully skipped them in order to help in this great affair. I can readily recall a few of the incidents which we encountered in our hearty attempts to outdo all other proms. Remember the long, round, flat and other mediums of rocks which we made from paper mache and painted? We were smeared from head to foot with paint and paste, and were forced to take a considerable amount of teasing from both students and faculty. We spent much of our time collecting the necessary props and eagerly hunted for flowers of all varieties. Someone actually brought back a mass of dogwood. which we quickly hid from the eyes of the Uauthoritiesf' VVe more hesitantly soli- cited the various funeral homes for their much needed artificial grass and flower baskets. We worked feverishly all day, until the time came to stand back and view our handiwork. Then we realized that our efforts were well rewarded. Our Htrysting place of green forestry was enchantingly equipped with a galant loveseat standing beside a bubbling brook. In the center of the gym stood Ye Olde Wishing Well. The Howers, securely tied in their baskets, were generously placed about the room and their enticing aroma added to the theme of Hgaiety, youth, and romance. At last the great moment arrived. On stage was the Paramount Orchestra, playing to the couples dancing in an ever-changing atmosphere of colors. Towards the end of the evening, the King and Queen of the Prom were chosen. Two of our Juniors, Peggy DeLamater and Ronnie Post, won these titles. They were formally crowned by lVIr. Bainbridge and congratulated by their friends. Dancing was then continued until 1:00 a. m. when everyone, although tired and footsore, regretfully left for home after a night of dancing enjoyment. fl' A fa l 0222 43' W YG - V w Q5 ' Il , ,. as - ,X Q 9 X All 1 Q2 4 1 X X Al? Sue placed first in the class for maiden horsemanship for the children under four- ten who had never won a blue ribbon, first in open horsemanship for children under fourteen, and first in the interscholastic competition, bringing the interscholastic trophy to Rhinebeck for the second time. In the class for bridal path hacks, Sue rode Mustard and placed second. On the same mount Sue took third in the class for English local pleasure horse for people who don't ordinarily show their horses. She rode Black Cat to a fifth place in the hunter type hacks class. Rhinebeck Central School is proud of Sue and the many other students who competed at Roosevelt. Here's to continued success! Baseball The baseball team of 1950 coached by Henry Hildreth boasted a good record of seven victories and two defeats.
