Text from Pages 1 - 114 of the 1973 volume:

What’s a SAGA?” “It’s an old-time story of battles, cus- toms, and legends telling the history of an important Norse family. “Well, what’s a Norse?” “I am a Viking, a Norseman or a member of the ancient Scandinavian people. We were sea rovers. This book SAGA is the story of Vo-Tech’s battles, customs, and happenings here since we call ourselves the Vikings.” Can I be a girl Viking?” “Not till you’re a tenth grader. While you are waiting, you K can see what we Vikings do here by reading SAGA ’73.” “Oh, you mean this is your history book? Yes, our own saga....” Contents Seniors Activities Underclassmen School Personnel SAGA 73 Jefferson County-DuBois Area Vocational technical School Drawer 100 ReynoldsiiUe, Pennsylvania 15851 Volume 4 May 1973 Seniors ...andfour became one... ” Graduation for the Class of '73 is her . Already? It seems like only yesterday that we were all scared to death at the thought of the first day of tenth grade because it was different from our home school. It was not like following our regular gang from junior high to senior high build- ings and seeing a familiar face of an upper classman that we used to kid around with or of finally meeting that teacher our brother had told us to look out for. It was not like entering a building that we had a general idea of from attending basketball games there. No, this was all so different. There were new faces and new teach- ers (whom we had to find out about on our own), strange rooms, and so many places to get lost in. We’d ask a kid standing by the stairwell to help us. He’d just stare back; he was lost, too. The first week we sat straight and were good till we found out how much the teachers would take. Gradually, though, we relaxed to just being ourselves. It’s easy now to look back and laugh at those trying times. We now realize that those first few days of that sophomore year were the whole beginning of becoming “one.” Karen Albert Data Processing Karen Aljoe Distributive Education Paula Anderson Graphic Arts Charles Alsbaugh Metal Fabrication Myrna Ankeny Food Service Deborah Anderson Food Service Carl Armagost Metal Fabrication Seniors Welton E. We are independent, and this year the Class of '73 experienced a new era. JROTC took a hand in this new pacesetting by adding glamour to our customs already in practice. For example, when the National Anthem sounded each morn- ing, we took it for granted as the flag was raised. Now it means so much more because this task is done by the JROTC Color Guard in full uniform. During this ceremony, we realize what our country really stands for -- the pride we now feel. With everyone trying to be different today, we are ahead of them all when it comes to education. We are learning job skills, work attitudes, and, above all, we, the students, make our own choices of what we want to be. And, fin- ally, we are something out of the ordinary. We are Vo-Tech! Disease of the mind that affects students around seventeen to eighteen years of age. 2. Treatment - cooperation of teachers plus sympathy in remem- berance of their own attacks. 3. Symptoms - laziness, low grades, absenteeism, daydreaming, pop- ulation growth in the gym accompanied by the empty seats in the classrooms. 4. Prognosis - symptoms occur in early spring and last until graduation. Length of disease is determined by students’ will power- and the date of graduation. Miss D. Elbell R.N. Spread over a lifetime and serve to everyone you meet. Happiness is the little things that are a part of everyday life that we take so much for granted. A simple laugh, a carefree movement, can bring back the mem- ories of a fellow classmate. You glance down a street, see a familiar silhouette, and you are ready to call out your best friend’s name. You’re sure that you'll never forget that person. Yet, when he turns around, it is not him at all. Happiness is living to see our POW bracelets no longer needed. Our boys came home! Happiness is having a local newspaper editor write a long col- umn praising us. It’s having former Director Robert Brown return and compli- ment us on our clean school. It’s having a stand-up assembly to honor Terri, Cathy, Carl, Terry, Myrna, and Grant for having placed in DECA or VICA com- . petitions. Happiness is being able to use our hands with all of our hearts as we use our heads. The theme chosen was “...and four be- came one... Everyone willingly helped with all of the senior activities. Those grades that looned so important through the years seemed to be miles away. No one will forget Chuck Alsbaugh as Viking Vick at Expo '73. Even though it was the worst night of the year, about 1800 people showed up. Twenty feet of rope and mud made the most sucessful event at the VICA Tug of War. No one cared about getting muddy; just winning that cake was the goal. When McQuown’s Marauders won first place, Mark Carlson dived into the mud headfirst. VICA’s car smash was also something to remember. Without “Chip- py” Schaffer it would not have been such a success. April 13 marked the gym show. Other dates to remember were May 17, last day for seniors; May 18, senior picnic; and May 23, graduation. We Senior Officers feel that his philosophy is an important one -- one that can lead us to become suc- cessful. To become a success we must learn for ourselves to let our ideas be our own, nurtured in the under- standing and beliefs that have grown through all of our thinking. We have to learn to think for ourselves and to build our own values based on a solid rock of faith in God. We must be willing to sacri- fice a part of ourselves and learn to be independent so as to do our jobs well. We must set a goal for our- selves in the distance yet never lose sight of our hopes and dreams ... or we will surely defeat our purpose. “It is not alone what we do, but also what we do not do, for which we are accountable.” Donna Stewart Cosmetology Terry Stoyek Electronics Technology Joe Tami Machine Shop Gary Uplinger Auto Body Barry Swan Building Trades Keith Swineford Machine Shop Seniors Michael Tost Graphic Arts Judy Utzinger Graphic Arts Douglas Updike Auto Body Grant Vasilauskas Auto Body Seniors Valerie Vilkinofsky Food Service Douglas Welsh Electronics Technology Thomas Wise Auto Body Harry Vrobel Metal Fabrication Michael Welsh Building Trades Brian Wolfgong Electrical Construction Arlene Weirich Graphic Arts Dale Williams Machine Shop Jeanna Wyant Distributive Education Graduation will not affect some students until the fall of 73 when they see school buses go by and remember the seats that once were theirs. All at once, reality hits. They are left behind! They say that they will come back to visit without knowing how much it hurts to walk into the school that they had once been a part of and had had so much pride in. Suddenly, they don't belong anymore. For those girls who made eyes at Mr. Thomas Wildauer, they’ll soon have smashed, dilapidated, and unreparable hearts. He’s getting married! When we are down, troubled, need a friend, and nothing is going right, we Senior Officers will close our eyes and think of her. She brightens even our darkest day. We've got a friend. Thank you for being patient with us as we'll never forget you. Love is rare but a true friendship even rarer. Goodbye and God Bless, Miss Fuller. The 12 Vo-Techers are on the following teams: (left to right) back row, from Brookville are Randy Geer, Harry Reinard, Ron Clinger, Dennis Bartley, Randy Lingenfelter, and John Pennington. Punxsy Chuck players are (left to right) Tim Smelko (No. 26), Gary Passmore, Paul Janocha, and Jim Esposito. Ron Burkett (No. 73) plays for Brockway while Dennis Beard, center, plays for DuBois. Randy (Link) was named Football Player of the Week by his Raider teammates for his action in the Karns City game. Burkett was one of the Little Twelve Conference Champs, Brockway Rovers. Sports are sports. Whether they are intramurals or interscholastics, they still take a lot of skill, practice, and energy. To sports fans, though, sports are just entertainment. Fans don’t really know just how hard boys actually work. No one individual person in sports counts; team work and co- operation are what counts. Hoop La! Once again the Faculty Fleet Footers defeated the student intramural champs. D D cagers went down to a score of 26-19. At the end of the first period there seemed to be confusion in the Faculty huddle as to who was on first or where! Scoring 11 points, Mr. Terry (Flash) Neal had one of his better days and dazzled the D D’S with his fake shots and deadly hooks. Mr. Thomas Wildauer, although he misjudged a few passes, was awake and made his famous behind-the- back passes. Mr. Neal fouled out of the game. Perhaps the Faculty won because the champs were still in a state of shock from seeing the “first string” come on the floor. We mean the women faculty. Leaning-Tower-of-“pizza’’-Yenzi E-B-E-R-T spells trouble for Ron. Hoop Lai Watch out, Trouble, he’s cornin’ through. Five Vo-Tech wrestlers went on to District Nine Tournament this year. Four are shown on the next page. Gene Smith, Brockway, also went on to Dis- trict 9, but there’s no photograph available of him in action. Vo-Tech has eight fellows who wrestle for DuBois. Other wins were: German over Davis Charest over Ogershok Schaffer over Rougeux Bonfardin over Mooney B. Smith over Mortimer Craven over McPherson G. Smith over Maloney Watt over Moore Scott over Guthrie Lingenfelter over Burket overtime The D.E. Jeans won the girls' intramural basket- ball trophy. Directed by Miss Debor- ah Bidwell, P. E. teacher, the intramurals involved six teams with 59 women battling for first place. The intramurals ran from Nov.6 through Dec. 19 during the lunch per- iods. The D.E. Jeans were winners for both periods. The first two runners up were the Lab Tech Stomp- ers, fourth period, and the Food Service Hush Pup- ies, fifth period. Other teams that played were the Food Service Bea vers and the Cosmetology Trotters. Girls’ Intramurals Sock it to ’em, Baby! The Champs. They have the trophy to prove it, too. Fourth row - Brenda Armstrong, Jeanna Wyant, and Terri Smith Fifth row - Wendy Bearfield, Becky Hartzfeld, and Sheila Kite. Sixth row - Shelli Davis and Kathy Krach. Last row - Karen Reiter and Mary Kay Marshall. Whata crew! What champs! The above Cosmo Cuties are the '73 volleyball champions of girls intramur- als. They defeated such exotic teams as the Lab Tech Rubber Stompers, Food Service Butterballs, and Distributive Education Raiders. Donna Stewart is holding the trophy. Debbie Kelichner is to the right of the trophy. Seated on the stage from left to right are Barb Kramer, Mona Himes, Betsy Kaizer, Patti Peterman, and Peggy Keister. Roxie Myers was absent when the picture was taken. Intramurals play an important part in Vo- Tech girls' lives. The competition is fierce (we like to be win- ners) and participation includes almost all of the girls in the school. Dinsmore’s Dinga- lings came in second in the tournament. Up, up, and away.... These are the officers responsible for this year’s tug-of-war contest, the fantastic car smash, dart throw, etc. Seated is Darlene Ankeny, secretary; Terri Smith, reporter; Tom Wise, president; Roger (Peanuts) Davis, Parlimentarian; Fred Bovaird (left in last row) vice president; and Mike Brewer, treasurer. VICA got off to an early start by having their '72-'73 schedule made and approved before '72 June was over. It was a good year for VICA members. The following five Vo-Techers placed in the Western Reg- ional Competition high enough to go on to Harrisburg in April: Terry Stoyek, Electronics Technol- ogy, radio and TV repair; Carl Armagost, Metal Fabrication, welding mig and tig; Myrna Andeny, Food Service; Grant Vasilauskas, Auto Body; and Cathy Beck, Cosmetology. Vicki Klaiber was Cathy’s model. Honorable mention went to John Dinger, Drafting and Design; Doug Snyder, Auto Mechanics; Tim Smelko, Carpentry; Dale Williams, Machine Shop; and Jim McKillip, Metal Fabrication; weld- ing arc. Debbie Spak, Graphic Arts; Lynn States, Building Trades; and Richard Gadley, Metal Fabrica- tion, sheet metal; also went to Harrisburg to compete. Tost Hits Roof! Car Smash was Fantastic Success . Shown are the trophied winners: Grant Vasilauskas, first in auto body; Terry Stoyek, second in electronics technology; and Lynn States, third in building trades. About 900 students from all over the state competed in the various events. At a standup assembly, VICA state winners, contestants, and delegates were honored by proud classmates and faculty. Terry Stoyek, electronics technology; Carl Armagost, welding mig and tig, metal fabrication; Myrna Ankeny, food service; Grant Vasilauskas, auto body; and Cathy Beck, cosmetology; had all placed in the Western Regional Competition at Youngwood, Pa., just a few days before they went on to state finals at Harrisburg. Honorable mentions winners at Regionals were John Dinger, drafting and design; Doug Sny- der, auto mechanics; Tim Smelko, carpentry; Dale Williams, machine shop; and Jim McKillip, weld- ing arc, metal fabrication. Fourteen Vo-Techers traveled to Harrisburg for the finals. In addition to the Regional winners, Lynn States, building trades; Debbie Spak, graphic arts and Richard Gadley, metal fabrication; accompanied teachers Mr. William Calderwood, Mr. A1 Mattivi, and Mr. Robert Hetrick, VICA adviser. Delegates to the convention were Tom Wise, VICA president; Ellie Carlson, graphic arts, Sab- rina Wagner, drafting and design; Clair Gleason, drafting and design; and Doug Valkosky, auto body. Vicki Klaiber was Cathy’s model. Vo-Tech has competed for three years in VICA contests. Two out of the three years Vo-Tech has had a first-place state winner in auto body. This is building trades' first year in competition, and they have a winner. Grant went on to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to compete in the nationals in June. State Winner for DECA To have a state winner the first year that you enter a competition is an indication that you are doing some- thing right. Terri Smith won a second place in the shadowbox com- petition at Erie and went on to wm first at Lancaster, Pa. So what is Distributive Ed- ucation? Many people ask this. DE is many things as shown by the small pictures here. It is dressing windows, mak- ing displays, selling merchan- diseat Viking Village, learn- ing business math, and on and on. Terri had to use good de- sign principles and create a display with materials given to her at the competition. She’s learned her lessons well. DECA Contestants at Erie Sheila Kite made like an Avon lady at the Erie conference. Other contestants were Wanda Hinds, Jeanna Wyant, Jackie Hense, Becky Hartzfeld, and CindyHofstetter. Some yearbook staffs brag a lot about pasting up their pages and crop- ping (cutting) the pictures. On March 4, layout sheets were delivered to the SAGA Staff hangout ....Mrs. Swigart’s office. On April 4, the last of 96 pages was finished and sent to Graphic Arts to be printed. This means that we took our own pictures, developed them, printed them, and cropped them. Graphic Arts made halftones, line shots, contact prints, negatives, plates, and finally ran off all 48,000 pages! ’Twas a miracle because we had problems that we never even used - like dull, crooked papercutters, etc., etc. SAGA means story; we’ve lived one.
