Cross Country Alan Jacobson, Don George, Dave Westerfield, Terry Avery, Parks Walker, Willard Fox, Tim Fuller, and Coach Ted Zetterberg. Not pictured : Rich Spencer. This year' s Cross Country team, though not able to reach its full potential, scored a series of Putnam firsts. The team opened against Centennial and was dumped 34-31. Parks Walker and Willard Fox tied for first place against Astoria in a 2.5 mile time of 13 . 37 . Putnam took its first meet 19-40 . Gresham fell next as Walker tied the school record of 13.297 score: Putnam 22, Gresham 36. The Milwaukie meet turned out to be an outstanding conte s t. Putnam edged Milwaukie 26 1X2-29 1X2 as Parks Walker placed second behind Mark Hiefield, runner-up at state. Walker was timed in 13:08g a full 21 seconds faster than the record set by Ben Steele in 1966.

The team traveled to the North Marion Invitational on October 9 . Dave Westerfield, after missing the first three meets with a foot injury, placed 24th in a field of 130 for top K-men honors. Willard Fox placed 30th. Fox came back the next week to win against Clackamas in 13:25, while Putnam lost the meet 30-27. David Douglas tripped the Kingsmen 30-29 the next week, although Walker again took first with 13:19. At the District Meet at Pier Park, Putnam placed fifth out of 12 schools, losing out on their team bid to state to Dougla s 117-108. Westerfield placed sixth at 13:25 in a field of 83 to qualify for state as an individual. Walker captured eighth as Fox took fourteenth. The next weekend at Willamettee University, Westerfield placed 37th out of 185 with a time of 12:52.41 for Putnam's sole mark at state. Both Wal k e r and Westerfield received Metro All-Star Awards for their District finishes. They both received the team's Most Valuable Award, while Fox was selected the Most Improved runner of the year.
