Completing their first Metro-League s e a so n, the Putnam Kingsmen roll e d to a league record oftwo wins, four losses, and two ties. The Kingsmen dropped the first two games to Clackamas a nd Hillsboro. On th e i r home field, they came backto crushAstoria, Milwaukie, and Washington High School of Portland in a non-league game. On foreign ground again, Putnam lost to Central Catholic a nd state C h a mp i on David Douglas. In the r e m a i nin g two games, the Kingsmen held Sunset and Centennial to ties. The leading scorers for-Putnam were Rick Verhaeghe, Dave Busby, andKeith Evans with 33, 19, and 18 points respectively. The leading ground gainers for the Kingsmen were Dave Busby with 300yards, Keith Evans with 238 yards, and Rick Verhae- ghe with 216 ya rds. At quarterback, Dan Purcell completed 49 out of 114 passes for 43M and 525 yards. Senior Stan Trytko was chosen as Metro-All-Star on first team de fe ns e at line- backer. Given honorable mention forthe Metro-All-Star team were Dave C onra d at tackle, Steve Smelser at gua rd, Bob Murphy at end, Dave Busby at fullback, and Dan Purc ell at quarterback. Chosen asthe most valuable player for Putnam was Stan Trytko, andthe most inspirational player was Dave Conrad. C o ac h john Wilcox felt the team gained much respect as they finished their first season in the Metro-League and sees a good season in store for the Kingsmen next year. In the district meet, Putnam placed eighth in the Metro League. In the non-league action, the Kingsmen runners took fifth place in the North Marion Invitational meet. Running the 2. 5 mile course took much endurance and strength from all participants. junior Ben Steele set a course record of 14:02. Coach Henry Kilmer was Well satisfied with the outcome ofthe season and looks for much improvement in next year's team. Coming back, the K in g s m e n defeated Centennial, David Douglas, Milwaukie, Beaverton, Central Catholic, and Hillsboro. The two r e m a in i n g defeats came from Astoria and Gresham. Putnam was led by the scoring of All-Stater Steve Norris who led the league in scoring with 386 points and a 19. 3 average, fifth in all-time Metro League scoring. Next in scoring were Randy Hurt and Steve Sm ith with 166 and 163 points respectively. The leading r e b oun d e r s for the Kingsmen were Stan Trytko with 155, Randy Hurt with 145, and Tom Holm with 128. This year, the club again sponsered the American Field Service assembly and coke party, which enabled the Student Body to learn from thirteen foreign students. Tri-Language members a ct e d as hosts for these students and also held a banquet for them.
