Tl-IE PROFESSIONAL NURSE - HER IMAGE The nurse walks softly down the hall. She is dressed in solid white from the tips of her toes to the little cap on her head. Doesthe fact that she is called Nurse make her professional? Does her starched, spotless uniform give her the right to be called pro- fessional? No! The uniform and the title, in themselves, do not make a professional nurse. Being graduated from a nursing school and receiving a diploma do not assure a professional nurse. She must have a goal in nursing. She must see this goal, set her standards, and then grow in knowledge, skill, and understanding until she reaches it and then find another summit to climb. The professional nurse can never think that she has reached the top of her profession, there is always some aspect of nursing in which she can improve. The professional nurse is ambitious, not only for herself, but also for her patient, never accepting second best when the best can be obtained, her patient being her first concern, She takes pride in her work-pride in giving of herself and education that those who are ill and under her care may improve physically and perhaps become a stronger person emotionally because someone, the nurse, took time to care and offer under- standing. The professional nurse does not treat the disease which a patient has, but instead, she cares for the individual patient and his problems with disease process taking second place as it should. Every man, woman and child is as individual and has the right to be treated as such. The ability to accept a patient as an individual and to adjust her personality to that of her patient separates the p rofe ssion al nurse from the trained assistants. The professional nurse has high ideals in life, concerning both her chosen career of nursing and her personal life. A professional attitude cannot be turned on and off as simply as a water faucet can. It has to be cultivated and nourished until it blossoms into reality. At home, at play, or in the hospital, the truly professional nurse is an asset to her profession, setting as example of courage and a standard for all her co-workers to see and follow. The professional nurse must learn to be humble without being weak, share rather than force ideas, serve rather than demand service, show empathy but not sympathy, win graciously and lose honorably, and know when to lead and when to be a good follower. She is the one with the extra special smile for a frightened child and the tender touch to the elderly that means more than all the words in our language. She is kind and gentle, but yet there is strength in her touch. The professional nurse never thinks of yesterday and what she might have done. Her goal is tomorrow and the progress she will make in her growth both as an individual and as a useful member of society. But as she continues to grow, she will never grow so tall that she can not look up to someone. Rachel Bordeaux 30
