When the will of john Rex was probated it was found that he had willed his entire estate, in North Carolina, in trust to Duncan Cameron and George W.Mordecai whom he had appointed executors and trustees. These trustees were instructed, in the will, to first pay his debts, free his seventeen slaves and establish them in a colony in Africa, and then use the balance of his remaining estate to establish a hospital for the care of the sick and afflicted poor of the city of Raleigh. From this beginning came Rex Hospital which, fifty years later, opened its doors to the people of Raleigh on May 1, 1894. The hospital staff consisted solely of volunteers who, except for the physicians, had no training in caring for the sick. The Trustees soon found that, to give the care needed by the patients, someone trained in the art of nursing was necessary to carry out the orders of the doctors. In June of 1894, Mary Lewis Wyche, a North Carolinian who had just graduated from the Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing, was employed by the Board of Trustees of Rex Hospital to act as head nurse, matron and bookkeeper. After working with the young volunteers at the hospital, Miss Wyche began to dream of a school of nursing in her own state where eager young women could learn the art of nursing. She soon convinced the physicians and the board members that this would be the best thing for the welfare of the patients. On October 6, 1894 the FIRST SCHOOL OF NURSING IN NORTH CAROLINA was established at Rex Hospital with an enrollment of five students. The candle of Nursing Knowledge lighted by Mary Lewis Wyche at Rex Hospital School of Nursing SEVENTY YEARS AGO has not dwindled but has grown bigger and brighter with each year. The class of 1964, which numbers 30 students, will bring to a total the number of 1098 nurses who have grad- uated from Rex Hospital School of Nursing. alma kermon, R.N. BATTLE, M.D. MARY LEWIS WYCHE Director of Nursing Gut Prayer O, Lord, in my important task I need Thy guiding hand. Give me the qualities, I ask, To care, to understand, To do the many things each day Which rise in this, my calling, In which, with Thy great help, I may Avoid mistakes befalling. Help me make this, my place of work, A happy one-a glad one. May I avoid the perils that lurk That could make it a sad one. Help me to earn respect of those Who, with me, form the team In this vocation we all chose With All for one our theme, That one -our patient-child of Thine Whose health and hopes have faded. Help us our efforts to combine So that he may be aided. And may I always understand His loved ones' apprehension, And give them too, a helping hand To ease their mental tension. Fill all men's hearts with charity. May it be kept alive So that, with regularity, They give and we survive. Bless doctors, nurses and each one Who works with daily zest Within our walls. When work is done Grant them their well-earned rest. May those, with fears and those in pain Who toss in our white beds Take heart and rapidly regain Their hopes and health instead. Without Thy help our work is naught- Our efforts all in vain. Help us to do the things we ought, Thy mission to attain. Amen John I-I. Hayes I 1 o Because of your strong faith I kept the track, Whose sharp-set stones my strength had well nigh spent I could not meet your eyes if I turned back. So onlwent Because you whose love and whose faith was so strong, You whose kindness, courage, and praise was there To help me on in times when the way seemed so long. So onlwent Because you have been for me an ideal With understanding and unfaltering patience, And guided me through until the end. So onlwent Today I'm a nurse -it seems but a dream, My training is done -I have come to the end, And my first grateful thought is of you. For all these things, Mom and Dad, and many more, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. ll Honotmg Our Partntsm 9 X, 9 J I3 Senior Class JANE PAINTER. LINDA CI-IIESSON ..... MRS. If K -E, Raleigh, North Carolina 5111215 5he Night Before Qtaduation T was the night before Graduation, when all through the dorm, The Seniors were all waiting for that glorious morn. Our graduate uniforms were all pressed and starched, As we waited and anticipated that unforgettable march. The Seniors, all gathered for their last rendezvous Couldn't wait for the change to whites from blues . While we planned for the time when we all would be parted, We laughed as we thought of the day that we started. The year '61-the month of September, Oh me! Oh my! I-low well we remember, - Those first days of homesickness and evenings of fun Were soon to be forgotten as classes begun. We all worked together, each side by side, And our only perfume was our cat's formaldehyde! We learned how to properly give an injection, And memorized the symptoms of a million infections. Oh, but it was hard, to cram in the knowledge, But all of us knew our way to State College! Finally the night came when none of us napped, For the day had arrived when we would be capped. We donned our caps and felt like kings As we moved on along to bigger and better things . And when we grew weary, someone would remind us, At least we now had that first year behind us. Now we were juniors and we moved up the hall, Tormented the Freshmen --and had a ball. OB and DR and the Newborn nursery, OR, Pediatrics, Medicine and Surgery. Hopefully we planned for a weekend of heaven, Then they told us our shift was, of course, 3 to 11. But just as it seemed we could no longer stand We found consolation in our little black band. And when we grew weary, someone would remind us, At least we now had two years behind us. Now we were Seniors-and surely proud of it, 'Though the thoughts of State Boards was nothing to covet. We packed up our bags and moved to the Hill , Where for three months we cared for the mentally ill. Then back to Rex we came with such a clatter, No one had to look to see what was the matter. It was home to the old room and all of our buddies- And staying up nights writing bib cards and case studies. The Emergency Room was full of much drama, But working 11 to 7 was really great trauma. We helped the patients their burdens to bear And treated them all with Intensive Care . When we now grow weary, no one has toremind us, That our three years at Rex are now all behind us. For our dream has come true as we hopefully prayed it, And with tear-dimmed eyes, we sigh-- GRADUATION , W 25 made it f , x f X 6 Class Sponsors lov DR . ISAAC MANLY 'WV MRS, EDNA MAUGI-IAN, R.N. Many factors go into the making of a yearbook but the people behind the scenes are the ones who help make it a true picture of school life. We owe a great deal to those who have contributed so much to our publication. At HUNTER PUBLISHING COMPANY, we say thank you to MR. ED GOLDSTON for the never ending help, advice and encouragement given us in the printing of our book. To MR. S MRS. F. LAVERGNE JOHNSON of LAVERGNE'S OF CHAPEL HILL,we thankyou for theexpert pictures and patience in working with our difficult time schedule. The service was not only efficient and of e xc e llent quality, but pleasant during our portrait and candid sessions. CHARLIE GILLIAM deserves our deepest appreciation for services too num erous to mention, but mostly for his genuine interest and support. MRS. SCOGGIN and MISS MERROW as our advisors have given unselfishly of their time, energy, and suggestions toward the publication of this book. To them we are deeply indebted. To ELIZA, JUDITH, LINDA, JENNY, CHARLOTTE and KAY, our staff, whohave workedso tirelessly in all facets, we are infinitely appreciative. MISS ALMA KERMON has worked hard for Rex student nurses, but this year we owe her a special thanks for the history and photographs she generously con- tributed commemorating the 70th Anniversary of our School. Classmates always help each other and this year is no exception. Thank you CLASSMATES for your help in selling ads, writing copy, and in making many helpful sug g e stions. To the MERCHANTS, BUSINESSMEN, and INDIVIDUAL SPONSORS of our yearbook, we say thank you for showing your interest in our school and for helping to make our 1964 Nightingale possible. As the years of the future become the years of the present, may your Nightingale be an ever near encyclopedia of memories-academic, social, and service, for the year 1964. Many good wishes from us and the entire Nightingale staff. Sue and Med 109 n 4 ag ' :MSM Q ,X.4x,,, L .W . , 5 -Lrvgism, Q x ' i . x' if.. , f, .
