For some, this was the first experience away from home and a lot of adjustments were in store. Only a short period was offered for homesickness because orientation swept us into a new world. We soon learned our official title was that of preclinicals, although we were known to up- per classmen as probies. How proud we were when the uniforms arrived. Most of us can remem- ber trying to decide how to put all the pieces together to come out with the finished product. After many hours in Nursing Arts we found ourselves going over to the wards for a couple of hours. lt's amusing to think how much time it took to give one bed bath. After all, it was terrible if you couldn't remember which leg to wash first and when to change the water. On June 1, 1956, after nine long, hard months of study, forty-eight girls were capped at White Memorial Presbyterian Church. We regretted that twelve girls who had returned home for various reasons could not be present to receive a cap. During the summer months we enjoyed working on the wards and were highly insulted if called preclinicals instead of Freshmen. The fall of 1956 rolled around and now we were classified as Juniors. It was really nice to see new faces and know that progress was being made. Many of us were venturing into special de- partments such as the operating room, obstetrics, and recovery room while others were running their legs off on medical and surgical halls. This was a long year and many times it seemed as though time were standing still. We received black bands in the fall of 1957 indicating that at last we were Seniors. More new faces filled the positions we had occupied two years before, while the friends we had known as big sisters went out into the world to maintain their respected places. The senior year was busy with special services such as Emergency Room, Out-Patient Clinic, Pediatrics and three months affiliation at State Hospital. Although we were uneasy about the latter, it proved to be an exper- ience we wouldn't have traded. On June 6, 1958, thirty-four girls marched down the aisle at Josephus Daniel High School to receive diplomas. This was truly a long awaited occasion and we felt so proud in white uniforms. However, this night seemed like a dream when we found ourselves back in stripes for three more months. During the three years at Rex we enioyed attending Platter Parties and many other occasions at State College. Along with these we enjoyed the many dances in the recreation room at the Nurses Home. Very special occasions were the Junior-Senior Banquets of both years and parties honoring us as Seniors. With all good there are usually disappointments. We regretted the loss of Mrs. Campbell, house- mother, and Miss Jones, evening hostess. We were very much grief stricken at theloss of Mrs. Egerton, day hostess and social director. indeed she seemed a mother to all of us. We shall all remember Mrs. Crow who sat many long hours at the desk in the evenings during Mrs. Egerton's sickness. She took a sincere interest in all the girls and greeted our guests in the most cordial way. Now as we pack our bags and bid farewell to our home for three years, we hate to part from girls who have become as close as sisters. If we should meet ten years from now, l'm sure not one of us would have forgotten these three happy years at dear ole Rex. Ann Stokes Historian 1231 I Q X M 5 1 s Q 1 .. Mary Ann Dudley Testator Witnesses: Martha Lee Johnson, President of the Senior Class Charles R. Gilliam, Annual Advisor l33l PROPI-IECY OF THE CLASS OF i958 As I sit leisurely gazing from my train window at the rolling countryside, my mind's eye seems also to wander. Instead of seeing objects such as farms and fields, it sees the intangible ones such as past years of happiness. I can clearly remember some of those days as though they were yesterday, especially the ones which were spent at dear old Rex. They were the years that showed me and gave me great happiness but more important, wonderful friends. I think of Barbara Graham whom we nicknamed Sleepy Time Gal. We were always laughing about it because she insisted that she didn't. Little did we know that she would need all that rest she said she never got for she married some boy and moved to Florida and spends most of her time trying to keep up with her three little boys. In her last letter she said she ran into two other girls on the beach with their families who were also Rex-Mates Mary Allen Hughes and Mary Ann Dudley. They went to Florida after graduation and were in the big money for about three years. Then they met their husbands and got married pronto. Of course the men were both from N. C. but it took the trip to the Everglades to find them. Gerry Eggert was scheduled to arrive there for a visits She works for the Embassy in Germany and I hear that she really has them baffled with the old Nursing knowledge. Martha Griffin is also a native now and finally got the iob with the Civil Service since her husband is head Financier. She still continues to model some and really makes those Civil Service uniforms look great. I can't remember any more of the class who live in Florida but I do recall a few who aren't too far away. Jeanne Babbitt finally got into that Mexican hat dancer's family las I called himl and has two of the cutest jumping beans imaginable. Jessie Williams who got her the date with him married his buddy Jack and they make frequent visits. Knowing Jessie, they don't have any passports and I hear that they paddle across at nite. They almost got caught one time when Jessie's hayfever acted up, but Jack iust happened to find some old Spanish rum in the boat which knocked Jessie out for a few minutes and saved the day. I-low I got down in Florida when l'm going north is beyond me. That's iust how the old mind works, I suppose. Many of the girls stayed in Raleigh and took most any job possible since a de- pression was threatening. Elaine Mitchell for one is head director of Rex's T.V. station which is attracting people from all over the country. Mary Farrior is head of Nursing Education at Rex and will probably remain a while since her son is finishing high school soon and plans to go to State. Mae Graves is around some place but I know she isn't working 3-I I. Walt probably still has a few sentiments left for the old cafeteria for he waited many nights for her to get off duty. As befuddled as we used to get, it's a wonder she hadn't forgotten him some time. The shift that used to hit Martha Johnson was II-7. Of course her husband never had to wait in the cafeteria for he rarely ever got that far. They were always having trouble with that car and he spent his time talking to the service station attendant. Speaking of service station attendants, Judy Eastep married that boy Will who had the little MG and the memories they shared of that car caused Will to set up a business for Servicing and Preserving MG's . Of course, in this day and time they are so long and low that there isn't much to them but he's still making a killing. Celia Norris Barnes is in town too but she has taken up the role of housekeeping since Bill has finished school and likes it much better than 3-II. She and Rosanne Green are constantly in touch as Celia belongs to the Civic Club of which Rosanne is president. Ann Stokes who is chairman of the local talent club wanted Oscar, Rosanne's husband to demonstrate his housekeeping ability but at the last moment he got a bad case of food poisoning and couldn't make it. l34l Oay Davis is still living in Raleigh, for Hubby Hugh has taken over at Occidental. They have three lovely children and that first girl who was Miss Accidental in l957 will surely be Miss Occidental in T978 if she gets any prettier. Linda Lee and Big Jimmy got married shortly after graduation and she is head nurse back in Premature. She's still trying to convince that aide that Walgreen's isn't a feeding station. Joanne Mitchell is still around and is making good on the No. l basketball team in the Nation, the R.lXl.'s. Her old roomie Billie Atkinson and her husband are ardent fans, They own most of Fuquabernathy las it is now calledl. His biggest competitor in town is J. B. Faucette, CaroIyn's husband and not to be outdone, they changed Varina to J. B.'s Varina. Although Carolina has claimed the better part of our class, the Yankee Land at- tracted some. Joyce Dean and her husband live in Danville where Joyce has an excellent dress shop. Still going farther north, I can see other faces. Rebecca Dunning for one, who married Dick DeCoste, moved to Jersey after graduation. She surely had a time getting our annual to press. I hear she's doing another yearbook with Dick as her co-editor and they both are hoping that this press time they'll have a little girl. Ruth Trent who helped Becky with the annual wrote me the other day and said that she and hubby Cliff are visiting in-laws in Ohio. They have been living in Oklahoma for the past year. New York fascinated some of the girls. Of course Glenna Sunderland Curran moved there immediately after graduation as her husband was a Yankee. She's not nursing any now and is concentrating on entertaining. At the present she is being hostess to my old roommate, Judy Buck and her husband Chichk. Seems as though Chich has a painting in the New York Art Gallery which is simply sending those art critics wild. Judy never knew much about art but I hear that she's wearing the old smock a lot. Dosen't sound like bona fide costume to me. Lib Abernathy and Ida Joyner are stationed somewhere in Manhattan and they are just crazy about the Armed Forces especially since it's peace time. They gave Janet Taylor a big sendoff last week as she is headed to India as a Missionary nurse. Should be very satisfying work, for these people are hungry for education and won't have to be reminded to pay the dues. My mind suddenly leaves Yankee land and hits to the Wild West. Seems as though Barbara Bennett owns a big horse ranch out there. Back in training those horses always seemed to get the best of her but Iet's hope she has no trouble now. Pete Mitchell and hubby Bob and their two boys are out there now visiting Barbara. They are going to stop off and see Jane Wade who moved there with her husband after graduation, Seems her favorite iob of cooking has her singing Home on the Range. Another song that's fairly popular is I Own the Range , which is being sung by Judy Rea. The last month we were in training she nursed a Texan and fell in love with him, got married and moved to the West. She found out that he was not only a Texan but Mr. Texas himself. My journey is just about over as I can see Richmond coming into sight. It has been wonderful living these few hours in the past but even more wonderful to know that my husband Bob and Bob, Jr. will be waiting at the station for me. Still being undefeated in city league competition, the team now has a seventeen and zero re- cord.
