V-11 .9 ...J ' ,L vw HISTURY lt was the first day of September in '53, and most of us made it as you see. We weren't minute women then but we soon learned to be as we fell into the routine of student nurse life. Seventy green pre-clinicals climbed the front steps that fall afternoon, opening the door to an entirely new life. We came from farms, small towns, and cities but in the months and years that followed we molded our lives into a single purpose-to become registered nurses. We began by receiving our books and studying for nine long, hard months. Our class officers were: President-Jean Moore, Vice-President-Betty Hatton, Secretary-Florence Chaffee, and Treasurer- Rebecca Glickman. Our Class sponsor was Mrs. Ed Bridger. It was Thanksgiving before we even got our uniforms-they were a new style which came in many, many pieces. What fun getting dressed was l l We finally got used to them. They looked better than the scrub dresses we had been wearing anyway. Christmas brought a week's work in the hospital, and the loss of some of our classmates. The re- mainder of us struggled on through a maize of early morning bed baths and exams. Our work was finally rewarded May 28, l954, when we received our caps in White Memorial Presbyterian Church. We were so hoppy that we didn't even mind working through that hot summer. Our second September at Rex found us under the leadership of Rebecca Glickman, President, .lean Cash, Vice-President,Alawoise Strickland, Secretary, and Jean Perry, Treasurer.. We added two more sponsors-Dr. Anne Louise Wilkerson, and Dr. Hugh McManus. An important event of the year was the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. We cooked the dinner and served it in the recreation hall, then we went to the Woman's Club for the prom. The biggest event of that year occured August 24th. We received our black bands. We were Seniors at last! Six of our girls were tapped into Santa Filomenia Senior Honorary Society. They were, Jean Moore, Betty Hatton, Shirley Edwards, Shirley Mew, Re- becca Glickman, and Bonnie Stewart. To lead us through our final year we chose for President, Barbara Lee, Vice-President, Gloria Duncan, Treasurer, Mary Ellen Edge, .lo Anne Gray, Secretary. This was the year of important events. The fifty-four of us trooped to the State Hospital in four groups, each group trying to have a little more fun than the preceding one. The annual was our big proiect. Then on June 3rd, T956 in Edenton Street Methodist Church we listened to Dr. Powell as he gave our Bac caloureate Sermon. The big day- was June 8th in Josepheus Daniels Jr. High School Auditorium wh en we graduated. Dr. Harper gave our Commence- ment address. But work wasn't actually over for mo st of us until August 24th, 1956. That day drew to a close our lives as student nurses at Rex Hospital. .1 - uzx...mnm.mn4 dnunu. ini! .ala MELISSA OGLE doughier of Dr. and Mrs. Ben Ogle JIMMY POOLE son of Dr. and Mrs. Frank Poole I I I I I I I I E E E I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I MARS L Left to right: Joyce Robdlrson, Esier Brcdberry, Jean Honeycuff, and Nannie Dickens . ,.A.mm.,.M- ma-fsfwmnsm:Ama1wmw-1mw,x: afrmsraxxwm 1966 Rrrrnnw ltelephonei Hello? LaVerne, how in the world are you? Barbara, when did you get in town? l'm on my way home from our class reunion at Nags Head. You should have been there. Practi- cally everybody was there with Their husbands of course. l'm having a short lay over here between planes and l thought l'd let you know how everybody is. Oh, l'd love to have been there but you know how it is with Charlie and the kids. Sure, l understand. I almost didn't get away myself. Just about everybody else was there. You should have seen Shelia Whitley and her Brand new Cadillac convertible. Dudley couldn't come be- cause he is in the middle of his iOth season with the Milwaukee Braves. And speaking of Milwaukee, Virginia Duke and Phyllis Bone are doing an act in the night clubs there that is making Milwaukee famous for another reason. Tell me more, this is getting interesting! Let's see. You should have seen Nell Bowling Hooker and heard her Puerto Rican accent. She has realy gone South American on us -- and Carolyn Day Perkins! You can't imagine what she is doing. She charms snakes on a snake ranch in Florida and says she loves every minute of it. Can you imagine that? She's trying to get Jean Cash Williams to go down with her, but she's too wrapped up in Joe and the kids. Anne Brewer just barely made it. She had just finished making a tour of the 2500 Brewer chain stores in the country. Jean Gurley and Annette Prince came together - they are two of the few left in nursing. Both are Directors of Nursing and very good ones, l'm told. Doodie lust blew in from Hollywood where she is now a star - all because of a record she made of Buick '59, Remember? Also in from Hollywood were Anne Land and Tallulah Kinsinger. They clon't speak to each other, though because they are rivals in the race to be number one star. You should see the mink Shirley Smith Joyner was sporting. She and Clifford must be doing very well in his wholesale business. Speaking of doing well, you should have seen Gary Anne Fitts and her gentleman farmer and cattle baron. Some girls are awfully lucky. Of all the girls l saw, Hazel Newton was the happiest. She has been working for Lord Alfred nine years now and doesn't have a gray hair yet. Jean Perry came all the way from Kentucky, but she left Darryl, the boys and Pearl at home. She hasn't nursed a day since she left Rex -- more power to her! Belva and Billy Dozier are still cutting timber in Mullins but managed to make it in time for the dance. r ' m-ii.'-w.vvxmimQ'fif-.. figs-FT.. .-,it--. 4 -r Gloria Duncan was just back from England after her try to swim the English Channel - she did it too, with one hand tied behind her. Jimmy Flemming flew his wife Faye down in their new jet and she took us all to ride in it . . . quite an experience as we were zooming over. Anne Kinch Lee pointed out her's and Robert's l0,000- acre farm that adjoins Jean and Jerry Wood's estate. Jean was unable to come because of the recent arrival of their little boy. When we got back from the ride we ran into Iris Vinson and Jean Malpass who are colonels in the Air Force Nurses Corp. They really looked sharp in their uniforms. Right behind them were Carolyn Branch and Anne Speir in their Rocketline Hostess outfits that were really stunning. They just had a few hours before their rocket ship left for Jupiter - the new vacationland of the universe, Sylvia Buck Baker, Faye Jones, and Joyce Whaley Lambert came together. All three are retired from the nursing profession and are full-time mothers to their collective Ql children. Shirley Frankos and J. W. were there with their two little football players. Shirley really had a beautiful suntan since all she has to do is spend her days at the beach. She's still living in Virginia. Hattie Gardner ably presided over the short meeting we had. You knew she won the Pultizer Prize for her book on the nursing care of Snipes before and after surgery? Just before the meeting ended Barbara Lee rushed in. She's kept very busy as new Director of Nurses at Carolina. Right behind her were Anne Fowler and Lillie Brewer, who are still doing night duty at Rex. Bless their loyal hearts. Married life has done wonders for Shirley Mew Rogers. We could almost keep up with her side of the conversation. That's what comes from loafing. Maxine and J. T. Kelly are on T.V. now. They have a show called Tall Tales From Carolina . We heard most of them at Rex from Max. Becky Glickman Scoggins is now Director of Education at State Hospital. She says her greatest problem is with the students trying to stay out after hours. Alawoise and Harold Flannigan left their parakeet farm just long enough to come and tell every- body Hello. That idea came to them with Dennis, while we were still in training. Shirley Wester and Louise Lovitte and their respective husbands were there for all the festivities - you know they went to Texas and struck oil . . . just multi-millionaires! Carol Kennedy has just completed her Masters at Duke and is starting as Director of Nurses at Belle- vue shortly. Sylvia Kirby is still touring the world with Jimmy and is proud to say no one calls her mother. Joanne Bowman and her husband were there with their twin girls. She hasn't changed a bit. Beth Duke is now official hostess at the Stork Club - she still enjoys parties as much as ever. Betty Hatton Graves came just in time tor the dance that night. She has given up nursing to be tull time wife to her Jimmy. Helen Tatsey Hobgood is in seventh heaven now. She has a job modeling tor a toothpaste company and gets to brush her teeth constantly. She's known as the girl with the cleanest mouth in the U. S. Joanne Gray is happily married to a football player named Joe or John. Idon't remember which, but it's bound to be one or the other. Jean Moore has given up nursing for embalming and l've heard she's one of the best, Ida Cox has been seeing the world with her soldier husband - she iust tlew in from French Morroco. Frances Godley Bass and her Bill arrived late for the dance, but soon stole the show, you know they have taken over Arthur Murray's Dance Studios all over the country. Bonnie Stewart and her husband came all the way from Utah and they still hide behind the news- paper - I never understand why! Faye Johnson was there with Edgar, Johnny, and their new baby daughter.. She has given up nursing to be a full time wife and mother. Margie and Bill wern't able to make it. They were in Australia where they are warming up be- fore competing for the Davis Cup. Well, they're calling my flight number. Remember me to Charlie and the kids and l'll give your regards to Carol and the twins. Bye now, and write.
