III 'l'0HY On September 15, l952, thirty-six girls entered Rex Hospital School of Nursing, with the hopes and high ideals of becoming future nurses. Immediately, we were given our books, which really made us feel like a part of the school. Our first trip to the dining room and the delicious food, was really something! Eventually, our stomachs be- came hardened to the good food, and we didn't starve after all. Our minds stayed in a turmoil the maiority of the time-books and State College boys. The class chose to lead them that first year, Patricia Graff as President, Dolores Cash as Vice-President, Faye Oliver as Secretary, and Catherine Parker as Treasurer, with Dr. Frank Yarborough and Miss Mary E. Farrior as our sponsors. Christmas came and half of the class was lucky enough to go home for one long, hard-earned week of rest and good home cooking. The remaining half stayed behind to work on the wards. This was our first real experience on the wards and everyone was quite thrilled at the chance to really apply some of our knowledge? ? ? Soon after the New Year came in, we lost five of our girls. Some got married, and others iust left. The last of January and the first of February were filled with mid-term exams, and we were all very glad when they were completed. Five girls transferred from St. Leo's Hospital to give us thirty-six girls again. We continued studying, learning, and working occasionally, and on May 29, l953, our big day came. A eight o'clock P. M., at White Memorial Church, we received our hard earned caps. This was quite an occasion for us-one that we'll never forget. No vacation for us following capping, so we immediately began working eight full hours per day in the hospital. Some of us were lucky Cor unlucky??l enough to go to the Operating Room, where we learned the different likes and dislikes of our doctors. Others in the class were fortunate enough to go on that most beloved thing called--Yes, you guessed it- Night Duty! ! We did other things besides work that summer, however, our many trips to the pool, our summer romances, and last but not least, our vacations! ! The end of the summer came much too quickly, and soon the seemingly never ending classes be- gan again. We didn't mind Fall too much, however, because we had received our caps, and these really made us feel like full-fledged nurses. The class officers for i953-'54 were, Dolores Cash, President, Jane Warren, Vice President, Norma Pittman, Secretary, and Peggy Shackelford, Treasurer. The main thought for our Junior year was the Jr. - Sr., which was held on April 30, i954 at the Raleigh Country Club. This was quite a big social affair for us, and a great time was had by all ! l ln May, the first of the class left us for that much-looked forward trip to Dix Hill for three months of psychiatric training. Dr. Yarborough and Miss Farrior helped us celebrate our Junior summer with a picnic out at Crabtree State Park, and a watermelon slicing at Pullen Park.
