Sonnv s coming and I've got to work fi 0 ff: will 1 III 'l'0HY On September 15, l952, thirty-six girls entered Rex Hospital School of Nursing, with the hopes and high ideals of becoming future nurses. Immediately, we were given our books, which really made us feel like a part of the school. Our first trip to the dining room and the delicious food, was really something! Eventually, our stomachs be- came hardened to the good food, and we didn't starve after all. Our minds stayed in a turmoil the maiority of the time-books and State College boys. The class chose to lead them that first year, Patricia Graff as President, Dolores Cash as Vice-President, Faye Oliver as Secretary, and Catherine Parker as Treasurer, with Dr. Frank Yarborough and Miss Mary E. Farrior as our sponsors. Christmas came and half of the class was lucky enough to go home for one long, hard-earned week of rest and good home cooking. The remaining half stayed behind to work on the wards. This was our first real experience on the wards and everyone was quite thrilled at the chance to really apply some of our knowledge? ? ? Soon after the New Year came in, we lost five of our girls. Some got married, and others iust left. The last of January and the first of February were filled with mid-term exams, and we were all very glad when they were completed. Five girls transferred from St. Leo's Hospital to give us thirty-six girls again. We continued studying, learning, and working occasionally, and on May 29, l953, our big day came. A eight o'clock P. M., at White Memorial Church, we received our hard earned caps. This was quite an occasion for us-one that we'll never forget. No vacation for us following capping, so we immediately began working eight full hours per day in the hospital. Some of us were lucky Cor unlucky??l enough to go to the Operating Room, where we learned the different likes and dislikes of our doctors. Others in the class were fortunate enough to go on that most beloved thing called--Yes, you guessed it- Night Duty! ! We did other things besides work that summer, however, our many trips to the pool, our summer romances, and last but not least, our vacations! ! The end of the summer came much too quickly, and soon the seemingly never ending classes be- gan again. We didn't mind Fall too much, however, because we had received our caps, and these really made us feel like full-fledged nurses. The class officers for i953-'54 were, Dolores Cash, President, Jane Warren, Vice President, Norma Pittman, Secretary, and Peggy Shackelford, Treasurer. The main thought for our Junior year was the Jr. - Sr., which was held on April 30, i954 at the Raleigh Country Club. This was quite a big social affair for us, and a great time was had by all ! l ln May, the first of the class left us for that much-looked forward trip to Dix Hill for three months of psychiatric training. Dr. Yarborough and Miss Farrior helped us celebrate our Junior summer with a picnic out at Crabtree State Park, and a watermelon slicing at Pullen Park. lConcluded1 On August 23, 1954, two hard years were almost ended, and we received our black bands, at a very impressive ceremony. Now we were Senior nurses, with only 365 days to go before we became graduates. Senior officers were elected, and Bonnie Jacox was elected President, with Betty Jones, Vice President, Gerry Wiggins, Secretary, and Betty Caviness, Treasurer. The main purpose of this year, besides graduating, was to get this annual printed. Hard work was done by all, and to press it finally wentl The Jr.-Sr. was held on April 29, 1955, at the Raleigh Woman's Club, and this was a very nice affair, 'with a banquet before in the Rec Room of the Nurses's Home. Many parties and picnics were given the seniors, and Baccalaureate was held on May 29, 1955, at White Memorial Church, the anniversary of our capping. Finally on June third, Graduation! Although we had to give up our white uniforms for our stripes until August 24, that was a big night for everyone. August 24 came with thirty-three proud girls leaving as Graduate nurses, awaiting the day of State Boards, and those R.N.'s. We were a little larger than thirty-three, however, as we had five husbands, one baby, with eight weddings planned for the fall. Our class has probably been noted as the most stubborn class ever to enter Rexfbut we usually got what we went out for. r After three years together, it was hard for August 24 to come, because we knew we would be sepa- rated. Some of us stayed at Rex, some went into the serivce, and others were married and kept house. All in all, it was a wonderful three years, and Rex Hospital is still standing, even if we did give it a hard time l l Historian Remember when Dickie Darling and Cudclles had their funeral, 'and went down in historyl?--or was it the roof ? ? ? i BEST PERSONALITY PEGGY MDDLE MOST POPULAR PAT STEED MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED PEG SHACKELFORD 4-n--....,,,,,,,.x I 'V if I 'nf Q' MOST PROFESSIONAL ANN DICKERSON FRIENDLIEST BETTY JONES MOST ATHLETIC DOLORES CAs MOST INTELLECTUAL BONNWJACOX IWOST VERSATHE PAT AUSTIN 0 , ,WWW MOST ATTRACTIVE RUTHLANGSTON 74' :S ,,,-0 MOST TALENTED MARGE WIHIAMS WITTIEST ELSIEBLALOCK .5 CUTEST BETTY CAVINESS PRIIPHECY 4I6 Queen Street St. Petersburg, Fla. Dear Peggy, Since you weren't there-I decided I'd tell you a little news about the American Nurses Association Convention I attended recently in Indianapolis, Indiana. You should have been there. Most of our graduating class was there and they certainly have changed since I955. As I stepped off the plane II rode the latest iet commercial air linerl I bumped into Helen Redditt who was arriving from her home in Arizona. She and her wealthy rancher husband raise quinea pigs. As we were getting into a cab, we heard someone yelling like mad and it was none other than Peggy Shackelford who's the only Air Force Flight Nurse anywhere who wears glasses. She leaves her aquarium ifilled with living goldfishl at Dix Hill with their godfather while on these trips. Well, old chap, we got to the Queen Mary Hotel, where the convention was being held and the first person I saw was Ann Brady, who for some strange reason thought we werefin Philadelphia. Brady was only staying long enough to see the girls before taking off for Hawaii to work with Myra Norman who's working in an Army Hospital there. Peggy, was I surprised to see one of our old classmates presiding over the meeting, but Weezie Dail knew her parliamentary procedure. Cuddles was sitting to her right looking better than ever. At intermission I saw many more of the girls, Bonnie Jacox had come down from Michigan and was busy talking to Mary Gurley, who left her four red-headed youngsters back in California. I ran into Gerry Wiggins who is living in Kinston and has been there since she and Grits got married back in l955. While looking at pictures of her four boys, someone tapped me on the shoulder, I turned around to face Ruth Langston who's now one of New York's most famous models. She was looking lovelier than ever. I also saw Betty Jones, who says life in the Shenandoah Valley is great! Hope Hunt made the trip with Betty. Hope is now president of the Alophen Pill Manufacturing Company. She iust can't seem to make any profit-we wonder why I I I My old roommate, Ann Jones, took time off from her iob as Dr. I-loke's caudal nurse to attend the convention. We had a long chat during which she told me that Peggy Cooper is now working for Dr. Ham- ilton and likes it fine. Ruby and Pat were too busy with Lionel, James, and the children to make the trip, so they sent their regards. Catherine Parker, who left her husband and children in Rocky Mount was there. She's hoping her fifth will be a girl. When I asked Catherine about Norma she told me that since she and Carroll had had their sixth child Norma had retired. When the meeting resumed, I sat beside Patsy Steed who said she was crazy about Maine and could hardly wait to get back to Doug. Ann Dickerson took Dr. Herring's advice and is now one of the Met- ropolitan Opera's brightest stars. Her latest hit is Madame Moth which prevented her attending the CConcludedl convention. I talked to Faye Burns who is Director of Nurses at Moncure Memorial Hospital. She had iust returned from London where she met the Queen. And, Peggy, you should have heard Ruth Page singing praises about her iob as industrial nurse for the Florida Orange Juice Company. She says she can get all the iuice she wants free of charge- how lucky can you get I I I asked Ruth about Louise Gooch and Betty Beal since I hadn't seen them around. She was quick to inform me that they were down in Panama with their sailor husbands. Billie Bell, who is OB supervisor at Rex was There but I didn't get to talk to her but I understand she is a very strict teacher. Betty Caviness, who just got out of the Army Nurse Corps and married a doctor she met in Germany, was there along with June Riley Culp, who lives in Warrenton and is another of the gang who exchanged her whites for a husband and three children. I'm telling you I almost faded away when I saw our own Elna Bridges on the entertainment part of the program. I learned that she became an overnight sensation with her very first recording, Put-ting My Last Cigarette. She is living in New York City and has appeared' on Ned Gullivan's Ghosts All Around. W That night I went out to dinner with Pete Cash, who is married and living in Texas. She says she's grown very attached to those wide open spaces. Boy, Peggy, you should have seen that gorgeous suntan Lou Ella was sporting. She is married to a prominent lawyer and living in Orlando, Florida. Margie Williams ioined us for a movie and we learned that between caring for Sonny and her three sets of triplets she's doing private duty in New Jersey. Margie told us that Betty Deaton is an instructor in Psych- ology at Johns Hopkins Hospital and making scads of money. Well, that's about it, Riddle, and I sure did have fun reminiscing with our old friends. Too bad you were too busy with Tom and the children to leave Fort Bragg. You'll just have to go next year and see that old gang of ours. iOld gang is rightl. In your next letter don't forget to let me know when you'll be in a position to come visit us.
