Illlll IIIII It is 3 o'clock in the morning - The babies are sleeping. The mother's are sleeping. The aides are sleeping. So are the internes. You wonder about me? I'm on night duty, IDUM DE DUM DUMI for the twenty-fifth week. I can't sleep. The notice on the bulletin board plainly says so. I'll turn the notice over and catch a few winks anyway. It's 3:O7V2 A. M. There's a crash outside! I iump over the bassinets and run to the window. Jay Given ldriving her new Caddilacl lust collided with Shorty's bicycle. Shorty is uniniured - he's still upstairs, counting out peas - can't decide whether to give I2 or I3 to Juanita Stallings, Head Dieti- clan. KDUM DE DUM DUMI It's 3:IOV2 A. M. Barbara Clark rushes to the scene of the accident, wearing her self designed police uniform, consisting of a 4x4 and two feathers. The feathers cover her -- KDUM DE DUM DUMI she must have lost weight. ' The only part of the car we can salvage is tlre radio. It's going full blast with Hamilton and Webb's new musical operation, Blood on the Floor , starring Betty Best singing l Dropped the Sponge . Followed by Leona Marshburn's latest program One Hundred and Twenty Questions. 3:I5 A. M. There's another loud crash! It's Ann Smith, who iust dropped everything, including the retractor she was holding for Dr. Neal, and struck out for California. She heard of the '59 gold rush. Whish - that was Dr. Neal - He's following in the rear. CDUM DE DUM DUMI My nerves are shattered! I turn the dial. It's 3:23 A.M. One of Broadway's stage plays is starting. It's Hamlet with April Riley playing the part of Ophelia The program is interrupted by a news flash - Two patients just escaped from Dix Hill. The catastrophy has the new supervisor, Jo Ann Macon, standing on her head. Just as I thought, she's crazy about her work. IDUM DE DUM DUMI An ambulance iust drove up. Betty Baggett is at the wheel. Her assistant Audrey Morgan is flaked out in the rear. What happened? A stretcher fell on her head. I pick up a newspaper lying in the foot of the ambulance. On the front page in bold print I read that Jean McDaniel is trying for the third time to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Keep up the good work, Jean. lDUM DE DUM DUMI 3:33W A.M. I flip over to the Want Ad section. Wanted Secretarial position, with adequate salary - 29 years old - no experience and no bad habits - willing to learn - signed, Joyce Har- per. Wanted Social Hostess position at the T.L.C. Fraternity L- no salary required - only room and Board -- signed, Sue Brown. Wanted Teaching position, preferably German - no other Ian- guage necessary. R.S.V.P. signed, Jane Lattam. Wanted Baby sitter for three weeks while husband and wife fly to Africa on their second honeymoon-signed Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thornton. QDUM DE DUMDUMI I scan the pages. My eyes bulge - For Sale One worn and slightly used husband and two offsprings - cheap + see owner - Mrs. Bobbie Pollard. Next item - For Sale Two army uni- forms with fatigues - underwear to match - call 3l23. Lt. and Mrs. Stinky Styers. For Sale One chicken farm consisting of two chickens - plenty of corn to feed 'em with. Call 2132 Mrs. James Taylor. At the bottom of the page I see where Janice Brady is flying to Reno lseeking alimonyl for her third divorce. Next item - Melrose'Coward is sailing for Europe to continue her musical career. lDavid launched the boatl DUM DE DUM DUM. It's 4:05 A.M. Frances Alderman is lust coming off her date - bubbling over with excitement -- After nine years of steady courtship, her fraternity boyfriend let her count the pearls in his pin. Just as I thought - She's a pearl digger.

DRG HAIR 'l' wontinueill 4:07 A.M. What's that I smell--it's smoke!! I-ib Fuller, Head Nurse of Pediatrics just exploded latter a run in with Dr. Lawrencel setting the hospital on fire. Clang, Clang, Clang -Lector Lynam, driving her fire truck just ran over three pedestrians, one adult and two kids, rushing to the fire - lDUM DE DUM DUM! 4:O7V2 A.M. Everything is under control now - only damage - Two crushed egos and three of Lector's curls. lShe got too close to the fire.! Someone iust hit me with a pint, felt more like a fifth -- no it's a milk bottle. Just Betty Schnidt with her friendly greetings. She drives a milk wagon - To show my appreciation I climb in beside her. She tells me Jerry Nelson and Jerry Hollars quit basketball and fled to de hills to de distilling business - must be de good ole mountain dew. 4:35 A.M. We pass Adaline Vann, selling flowers on the street. She figures to make more money that way. Just played a hunch - that's what she did. Just played a hunch!! Lona Worrell iust crossed the street to the orphanage - little old to be an orphan -- no she's the matron. Who is that little woman sitting on the curb? lt's Becky Jackson Warrick - She has suffered in- somnia ever since Woody left. Schnidt drops me off at the corner -June Beasley helps me to my feet - She has only three more years to wait for the wedding. She tells me Bonds has taken the fatal plunge and has three little girls. You know what, they all three giggle. lDUM DE DUM DUM! Manie Richardson iust tipped her cap on her way to work. She took Mrs. Stripling's place in the clinic. it's 5:07 A.M. Mary Lamb just stumbled off the bus. Ray stumbled behind her. They are stumbling to City Hall. 5:18 A.M. Here comes Frances Dunn wearing a flowing robe. What's that you're wearing Frances? lt's a nun's habit. l'm a nun . - Just getting the facts mam, iust getting the facts. The babies are awake -the mothers are awake - the aides are awake - so are the internes lthey left three hours ago! You wonder about me?? l'm awake too, Miss Cheek iust woke mel Oh! Oh!
