ffcvm ?fl35f0 After many weeks of speculation as to whether we passed the entrance exams, forty- three girls entered the Rex Hospital School of Nursing on September 11, 1949. This class, like the classes before them began a new era in their history of the Rex Hospital School of Nursing. We entered with qualms as to what terrible fates would befall us. With starched uniforms and glistening white shoes, we blundered on thru our pre-clinical period. As pre-clinicals, our class schedule was harder than any we had ever experienced before. At night, our dreams were filled with Microbiology, Anatomy, and Psychology. Protozoans flagelled their way thru masses of microbes, while viruses attacked our Nursing Arts Instructors. Many a weekend we stole our pickled catsn from the Anatomy Lab and kept them in our rooms for extra study. To the dismay and partial asphyxiation of Mother Campbell, Miss Riddle and all the graduates on the adjoining hall, fumes of formaldehyde seemed to penetrate the air. As our pre-clinical period drew to a close, many of us began to realize just how dear the new friends we had made were and how close a unit our class was. On February 28, 1950, thirty-two of us received our caps. With proud voices and serious faces we repeated with Miss Riddle The Nightingale Pledge. In our hearts we had just begun to realize the great task that lay before us. Our freshman year began with anticipation of the many new things we would be doing. We learned to give medications using our roommates as Guinea Pigs. The wails and moans emitted from the Nursing Arts Lab would have been horrifying to an unsuspecting observer. In june of 1950, many of us began our special services. The tales of woe brought to the Nurses' Home from the Operating Room and the Obstetrical Hall made us all resolve to take a business course, but the arrival of our capes brought these resolutions to a close. As we entered our junior year we were becoming older and more experienced. Not all our original class remained with us, but during our junior year, xto our delight, we received six new members in our class. We selected Mrs. Loraine Daniels and Dr. William Senter as our class sponsors. Many of our off duty hours were spent earning money for our junior-Senior Banquet and Dance. Finally the big night arrived. The Virginia Dare Ballroom was trans- formed into a setting of spring freshness. We danced to the music of Woody Hayes' Orchestra. The junior-Senior, which ended at midnight was enjoyed by all. In September of 1951, we began our Senior year, black bands and all. It was our aim to make this our most outstanding year since it would be our last one together. At the beginning of this year we began going in small groups to State Hospital for our Psychiatric Affiliation. Our experiences there were many and varied, and we all enjoyed talking about them together. We chose Evelyn Hoffman as our class president and Anne Blake and Barbara Hill as co-editors of our annual. cCOIIfi7ZIl6d on page 435
