This class, like the classes before them began a new era in their history of the Rex Hospital School of Nursing. We entered with qualms as to what terrible fates would befall us. With starched uniforms and glistening white shoes, we blundered on thru our pre-clinical period. As pre-clinicals, our class schedule was harder than any we had ever experienced before. At night, our dreams were filled with Microbiology, Anatomy, and Psychology. Protozoans flagelled their way thru masses of microbes, while viruses attacked our Nursing Arts Instructors. Many a weekend we stole our pickled catsn from the Anatomy Lab and kept them in our rooms for extra study. To the dismay and partial asphyxiation of Mother Campbell, Miss Riddle and all the graduates on the adjoining hall, fumes of formaldehyde seemed to penetrate the air. As our pre-clinical period drew to a close, many of us began to realize just how dear the new friends we had made were and how close a unit our class was. On February 28, 1950, thirty-two of us received our caps. With proud voices and serious faces we repeated with Miss Riddle The Nightingale Pledge. In our hearts we had just begun to realize the great task that lay before us. Our freshman year began with anticipation of the many new things we would be doing. We learned to give medications using our roommates as Guinea Pigs. The wails and moans emitted from the Nursing Arts Lab would have been horrifying to an unsuspecting observer. In june of 1950, many of us began our special services. The tales of woe brought to the Nurses' Home from the Operating Room and the Obstetrical Hall made us all resolve to take a business course, but the arrival of our capes brought these resolutions to a close. As we entered our junior year we were becoming older and more experienced. Not all our original class remained with us, but during our junior year, xto our delight, we received six new members in our class. We selected Mrs. Loraine Daniels and Dr. William Senter as our class sponsors. Many of our off duty hours were spent earning money for our junior-Senior Banquet and Dance. Finally the big night arrived. The Virginia Dare Ballroom was trans- formed into a setting of spring freshness. We danced to the music of Woody Hayes' Orchestra. The junior-Senior, which ended at midnight was enjoyed by all. In September of 1951, we began our Senior year, black bands and all. It was our aim to make this our most outstanding year since it would be our last one together. At the beginning of this year we began going in small groups to State Hospital for our Psychiatric Affiliation. Our experiences there were many and varied, and we all enjoyed talking about them together. We chose Evelyn Hoffman as our class president and Anne Blake and Barbara Hill as co-editors of our annual. cCOIIfi7ZIl6d on page 435 55 fwffandg fam nf We, the Senior Class of the Rex Hospital School of Nursing, do hereby will and bequeath the following items and personality assets to the designated friends and members of the Junior Class. On the list is the name Miss Sue Davis and I'm sure it's my former classmate when she comes in, as always, 15 minutes late. Sue was a representative to the A.N.A. convention recently held in New York. She's on her way back to Raleigh and Rex, where she's head nurse on Men's Surgery. This is the tenth anniversary of our graduation from Rex and we're thinking about our former classmates. It seems that Anna Ruth Barbour is keeping Rex in the news, especially since she was elected President of A.N.A. Dorothy Ketner made all the society pages by marrying a millionaire from Texas. Of course most of the girls have that Mrs. as well as R.N. degree. Dorothy Saintsing gave anesthesia for some doctor in Thomasville until she married a former textile student from N. C. State. Margie Harris married a State graduate too. They're living in Georgia now and Margie has full time job as housewife. Ruby Pennington is living in Montgomery, Alabama. She and James have lived there since his discharge from the Air Force. Had a card from Jane Royal who's really seeing the world as hostess on a large ocean liner. Jane tells me that Phil Carter was a passenger on their last trip to France. Phil's a nurse companion for a Mrs. Vanderbuilt. Speaking of passengers, guess who was on our last flight to Florida? None other than the former Anne Halliburton and Paul on their second honeymoon. I believe they left Paul, Jr. with Claudel and the little Lassiters. Jean Fuller is in charge of the Emergency Room at Rex now and as usual, she knows all the gossip first. She tells me that Ann Blake was recently treated for minor cuts and bruises when she had a wreck with their new car. I'm thankful that she left those 6 little blond-haired boys at home. We hear a lot about two missionaries in China. They're our France Haddock and Wyatt, of course. Bessie Bizzelle made quite a success of government nursing before she married the Trilene salesman. Mickey Finch and Catherine Wallace are still at Rex. Mickey is in charge of the Delivery Room. I guess that's why all the little boys are named Bill. Of course, Kat 's O. B. supervisor now. Doris Meeks left Rex after two years. I think she and Edward have their own Pediatric Nursery now. Jennie Tyson took a beautician course and has a lovely shop down in Lucama. Mary Lou Ayscue, having plenty of practice from student days, gives the Tonis. Ayscue's former roommate, Libby Hill, has been a little homesick. I believe she's living in Canada now. Speaking of Hills, I hear that Barbara had more trouble learning to wear the wooden shoes than teaching the children how. Two of the girls were patriotic. Joann Blake grew tired of waiting for Serce to be sent home, so she joined the Army and went after him. Betty Cleaver is in the Navy now. She was stationed in Hawaii until all the natives began dyeing their hair red. Marion Billie Farrell is in charge of the Out Patient Department at Carolina and I believe that she is managing a softball team on the side. fC0ntinued on page 551 Zfiv X 517 ifb f Ilan 'O ffm ELSIE MALCOM .,....,,,v.... ........A....A........,...................... After the banquet, the ballroom was transformed into a miniature night club. The music was furnished by Woody Hayes' Orchestra. At last graduation time finally arrived. The Bacculaureate Sermon was delivered at Pullen Memorial Church. The graduation ceremony was held in the Meredith College Auditorium. After receiving our diplomas and pins, we finally realized our three years were com- pleted. We were graduate nurses.
