The class of '49, then feels the need of some permanent testimony, and endearing record of their hopes and ideals, their struggles and achieve- ments, their friends and good times, their serious and their joyous moments. The Purpose of The Nightingale is to furnish just such a record, Providing a memory book to be treasured always, honoring the outstanding among us, making the year 1948-1949 live again its stirring times, its familiar faces, and all fulfilling the tradition of this yearbook, we present the 1949 Nightingale. The Nightingale Twenty CLASS HISTORY The history of the class of '49 begins on a day in August three years ago. As we look back over these three years we hnd that they are probably the most signihcant ones in our lives. We have worked and studied hard to become a Part of our chosen profession. This Is Our Story The hrst six months of our training was quite an experience for all of us. We were known to the rest of our profession as preclinicals . . . Blue uniforms, study hour, Nursing arts, and that hrst day on the halls, are things we shall never forget. We began to know each other a little better during these months, and we managed to have a lot of fun. We had watermelon parties, to Mother Campbells despair, and there were several dances we enjoyed very much. Christmas came and soon was gone, and then came capping. We were a proud group the night we received our caps and wore our white uniforms for the hrst time. Wirli our preclinical days behind us we were now known as Freshmen. We had to go to classes that first summer. Remember how hot it was and how sleepy we got? Almost before we knew it though, we had been in training a year. We felt like veterans now for we were Iuniors. During our Iunior year we began our special duties. We had classes and exams and more classes. When Christmas came we got up at 5 o'clock in the morning to sing carols to the patients in the hospital. Then we began to work hard on plans for the banquet we were to give the grad- uating seniors in the spring. Our favorite song at this time was Leave the Dishes in the Sink Ma. Wlien summer came and classes were over for a while, we began to realize that our second year in training was almost over .... Then at long last we became dignihed Seniors. It was grand to be a Senior, and what a difference our black bands made. Cut responsibilities began to increase more and more, and we began to answer questions instead of asking so many. We celebrated Christmas with a Christmas tree and a party. In about two months our classes were over for good, and the time of our graduation came nearer and nearer. Cut Senior activities began with the banquet at the Bon-Air given to us by the Iuniors. This was followed by picnics, barbecues, dances, a theater party, and a breakfast. The big night of our graduation Hnally came. We had looked forward to it for so long, and it was complete with long sleeves, red roses, pins and diplomas. This almost brings us to the end of the History of the Class of '49. We have a lot to look for- ward to, but we shall alwavs remember the days we spent as Student Nurses. The end Frances McLeod Twenty-six The Nightingale LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT STATE or NORTH CAROLINA COl,INTY OF WAKE CITY OF RALEIGH REX I'1OSPITAI. SALLY I-IERRING The Zvigbifnglllt' Twefzty-scurfz CLASS PRGPI-IECY Received a letter from Jane Beland W'ilkinson the other day. She told me she and Gordon will be coming back to the States as soon as her husband's assignment is complete. After her graduation from Rex School of Nursing she worked on a surgical hall until she could obtain government orders to join her husband, who is with the Special Detective Service in Berlin. They have been in Germany since 1950, and both long to see North Carolina once again. Eva Mae Cootie VVilliams. R.N.. B.S.. still striving to keep those student nurses over at Franklin County Hos- pital, is at wits end. She says pink slips pour in every day, but she just loves each one and that they are indiv- idually excellent students, So she calls on Betty Taylor Coley to help discipline them, and when she considers sending them home, she just calls Annis Wicker Hales. then quickly discards the idea. Cootie plans to leave for China soon, and open a school of nursing there since Steve has completed his studying in America. Annis 'Wicker Hales, now working at Lee County Hospital, cannot even leave her work long enough to visit in Raleigh. So I trucked down the other Wednesday afternoon and found Joe, Annis and the kids out at the pool. Really did enjoy a chat with them. They haven't changed a particle and can ole Wicker cook. While we were there Mr. and Mrs. Cameron Wood, you remember Eleanor Rosser from Broadway. Well she finally decided Cameron was the finest. So they got hitched in the Broadway Presbyterian Church. Dot Bethune Rosser sang with Martha Daniel at the organ. Miss M. Daniel obtained a short leave of absence from tthe Navy. I hear she intends to give those folks in Oxford some big news. They are planning tNeil and Marthai to have a formal affair in her old church there real soon, and all the class members are expected to attend.. Peggy Phipps.. is home a few months, after a tour of Europe, South America, and Panama. She is with the Pan-American Air-Lines, but plans to resign and join her to-be husband, Prince Kahn in India in June, where they will be married. Miss Phipps states she likes India, but North Carolina and her ole home state of Virginia will always be first. Helen and Ed Turner have recently made their home in Denton after having lived in Alaska with their three girls. Helen Jr., Marie, and Mary. Mrs. Turner is the former Helen Hunt of Denton, but has been away for a few years, first at Rex Hospital for three long years. then she has been with her husband for the past nine years on an expedition. Ed is a member of the Cow-Cow Legrande Exploring Institution. Dr. and Mrs. Martin Jones are still living in Granite Falls. They have just adopted a French Refugee of which they are exceedingly proud. She is a musical genius, only seven years old and plays like Josa Iturbin. Mrs. Jones is a graduate of Rex, where Dr. Jones met and wooed her. while doing his residency work there. They have previously worked together, but now Jones fDot Martin of Jonesvilley will devote her time to Ja Vous, Grace and Danny Ewing have returned from their secluded island in the Pacific, to live in Candor for a while, Grace says the seclusion on the island is really fine. No work, no nothing except eating, sleeping and lying in the sun on those sandy beaches. She is the former Grace Dickens of Havelock, After spending 3 few years in the Army she finally decided to give up the title of Miss. Miss and Mr. Rex, now Mr. and Mrs. Garland Stone fFrances and Stoney? are doing fine in Danville, Va., where Stoney is chief administrator for the Danville River Mills. Frances was down last week for a short visit with her mother here. She brought those three lovely little girls. when she visited the Coleys and we had the most enjoyable conversation. She hasn't nursed a day since graduation. She plans to run down Sanford way to see her ole room- Sally Herring finally resigned to being an old maid, after mate Eleanor Rosser VVood while here. Helen and Pat Creech have just returned from a Hshing in a few days. Pat has a large coffee concern there. so he lNext place will be Alaska Pat said.l Let's hope to see our Murray and Ruth CAdamsl Small are still at Rex. Ruth is trative Staff. They are planning to leave for Asheville in a one is invited up for a week-end any time. Mary Lib Love Green visited Helen Massengill Creech in day. Curtis is one of the professors at State College, while pects to resign soon and be a patient in Room 216. Curti Sarah .lane Radcliffe Kizee new over the other afternoon and Jim really love this flying business. Sadie took me up on a business trip to California. So Sadie was visiting all he Sparrows Air Lines.
