Class Flower: Red Roses Class Colors: Blue and White Class Motto: To strive, to seek, to find, but not to yield ---Qi 38 lir- aaa .Malory Preface: Our tramps are leaving the battlefield where the war wages on and though we've left some behind we have a feeling of victory in our hearts. We've fought a long, hard battle here and as we gather together and hear in the distance the last note of taps they echo in our ears and we think back to our first days in training: Probies: lt all began June lst, l945 at eleven o'clock. We started out fright- ened by the newness of our chosen profession. We were the preclinicals, who wore blue and met each day for endless classes, which were the basis for our nursing, under the direction of Virginia Miles and Martha Raye. On Sept. lst we were joined by another troop and united as one battalion. We marched along until the end of our preliminary period. Freshmen: Capping gave us new uniforms and caps and along with these inspira- tion and confidence. Juniors: llncreasing responsibilities? marked the beginning of our second year. The outstanding event of this year was the banquet we had at Teel's Supper Club. This was only one of the highlights of our Junior Year. One of the many dances which we remember was the Valentine dance when Bill and Jeanie were chosen King and Queen. As this year came to a close remember the celebrations we had over our black bands. Seniors: Black bands marked the nearness of our journey's end. ln October the Hallowe'en masquerade ball was quite a success, with everyone appearing in costume. Christmas was celebrated with a party: remember Santa, wasn't he fun? Then the election of Miss Rex, our own Becky won this title. This was our closing gesture to Rex. Graduation: It was the year of l948 that this troupe said farewell to their old battle- field and prepared for an even greater battle in the years to come. As we march onward we face the same grim determination that makes us worthy to be called nurses. Dearest Lucy: Guy and l just returned from California and were so happy to find a letter from you waiting for us. lt was so nice to learn that you are still at Rex. lt's been a long time, ten years, in fact, since we all left, but I often think of the class of l948. We were sort of special, weren't we? I saw Eddie Shaw at the airport just before we took off from California, she and Margaret Driver are both Airline Hostesses now and Margaret made the trip back with us. Driver told me that Jeanne Strickland and Bessie Mae Butt are both happily married now and living in Raleigh. Alex piloted the plane back as far as Rocky Mount, where Jane Dail met him. They are making their home in Farmville. Jane said that Dr. and Mrs. Lud Scott had just returned to Philadelphia after spending a couple of months in their summer home in Burlington. Vivian was probably displaying her five, beautiful girls. What happened to those boys, Oliver? l lunched with Trudy lHudsonl Howell and Mildred Glasgow not long ago. They are both living in Smithfield now. They had heard from Frances fWreenJ Clary and Gerry CGayD Hammond and said that both of them were married and living in Virginia. When did you say that Agnes Eason and her husband would be back from visiting Jeanie CBarbourl Maxey and Carolyn Hill in their homes in South Carolina? l almost forgot to tell you that Marjorie Simpson is on leave from Mexico, where she has been doing Public Health Nursing. Ruth Webster, her former roommate, is head of Public Health Nursing in Raleigh. In your letter you mentioned that Mary Rose Harrison, Rebecca Hinnant, Lois Alford and Martha Cook are still with their Alma Mater. All are married now. Doshie Jackson's dreams have come true. She is now Dr. Branaman's office nurse. She told me that Ida Eaton and Ellen Nelson are both in Morehead now. Eaton in a doctor's office and lsh in Morehead General. lsh is digging 'taters on the side with Milton. l received a recording from Jenny Lynn Jones of her debut at Carnegie Hall. She's doing wonderfully and, oh yes, her hair is still long. Mary Lou Brasher and Floyd were in Rocky Mount not long ago. They had just come from Kentucky where they visited Rita Kessler and Billy in their fish market. l was visiting over in Ahoskie the other day and dropped by Roanoke Chowan Hospital to see Mrs. Dot Smith Brown and John Blanton walked up and tremblfngly handed Dot an admission slip for none other than Betsy Jane Blanton. She is here for her sixth baby boy Call of them redheadedl. This reminiscing has been wonderful but l must close, as it's time to fix dinner for my family. Really, Lucy, l enjoyed hearing from you and look forward to hearing from you again in the near future. Tell your hubby hi for Guy and me. Love you, Mary Earle. -gil FQ..- unior Cfaaa keen!
