If it recalls pleasant memories to those who have gone before us, and proves an iuspiratioii to those who are to follow us, it will have fully achieved its purpose. 2 Qsecffcafion TO THE PARENTS of the class of 1916, we tlecilieale this book of cherished memories. We go out into the world trained to help suffering IHEl11iiiIll.i, and that training was made possible by the sacrifices of our Fathers and Mothers, who have given without stint and with no thought of self. Have you been waiting long? l'm sorry my bus was late. Oh Spencer! lt seems like ages since live seen you. Youire looking well. l believe youlve been taking good care of yourself.'7 Yes, it seemed like a long time in a way and then it seems only yesterday. Now that l've Hnished with my post-gradaute course at New Haven and you at Bellevue, it seems that we've ac- complished quite a lot since our gradaution at Rex five years agof, Spencer, I don't have anything in particular planned but donit you think it'd be fun going to a carnival near here? ltls only a few blocks from the bus stationf, 'gl think that's a swell idea. l haven't been to one in a long time. Since it's only a few blocks. it'll be a nice walk. Spencer, so you finally married Hall?- 'W es, two years ago and we now have a nice little home in Connecticut. Well, how about your- self? Have you ever made up your mind to marry? G'Yes. but only recently. The date's all set. Two months from now. Listen. it sounds like everyone's having fun with all the brassy records and laughter and loud noises. Look. the Ferris Wheel. Roller Coaster and all the side shows! Gee, there's that usual monkey show. the fat lady, the headless woman and the stage show. Look at all the men gathering aroundf, '!Wait! VVhat,s this? Oh, the good old fortune teller. Let's goin. This should be fun. You know I've heard a lot about the Crystal Ball. Let's see if she can tell us about all of our classmates. l've sorta lost contact with most of them. Spencer, l can hardly understand her diale ct, but she implies that we can look into the Crystal Ball. This is really going to be something to seefa '6Yes. look. There,s Velva Lamm and sheis in 216 at good old Rex. What's that l see? Twin boys! lsn't that something? l remember her marrying Claude Wlieeler' about two years ago. There's Shirley Bizzell. She's Velvais private duty nurse. l always thought sheld do private dutyf' Look on the other side of the ball. ltis none other than Doris Bradshaw. Sheis Miss Wil- liams' assistant. Doesn't she look dignified behind that big desk?'l 4'What,s this? Yes, it's Virginia Cohoon. now Mrs. Bill Greene entertaining the alumni associa- tion in the recreation room at Rex Nurses' Home. This looks familiar. lt's Frances Branch, Superintendent of nurses at ,lohnston County Hospital. 'Ufhe next scene takes us back to Raleigh and it's Gladys Crawford as Dr. Westis ollice nursef, '6Who,s this? Melba Cox out on a delivery with Dr. Yarboroughf' G'My! Who are these two? ltls Mrs. Stripling and Marie Leavitt at Southern Pines. Leavitt is Mrs. Stripling's assistant at the sanatoriumf, hlmagine Ruby ,lohnson in conference with Dr. Thompson? She's with the Rahabilition Service. l hear she has done some wonderful work with the disabled veterans. Hlrooks as if welre near Rex again, lt's the Methodist Orphanage lnhrrnary with Ann Chason in charge. l guess it was her love for Pediatrics that brought her there. The next scene is in the operating room at Duke. There,s Esther Thorne giving anesthesia. l hear she marricd one of the interns there. Here-'s a Public Health Nurse visiting in a rural home and it's Theramae Boyette in good old Johnston Countyf, L'Spencer. l don't recognize this scene. lt looks foreign. but there's a nurse. Why it's Mary Helen Council, and she's in China. l remember now she studied as a missionary and went to China last year. '4Look! Who's this? Darrine Henderson and that's Germany isn't it? Sheis teaching a Hygiene Class. l hear she has done well in teaching the real way of living to those misled children. She has also married a lied Cross liield Worker. '4Why this is an Airliner! Who is that pretty hostess? Peggy Harrington and she seems mighty sweet to that pilot. No wonderg it's her hu sbandfi Whats that below us? ltis a huge 'llrans-Atlantic Oceanliner with the Ship Nurse none other than Annie Grey VlX'6l'9ll6.ii t'Oh. where's this lovely moonlit scene? On that day they stepped across the threshold into a small new world within itself. There were many doubts in their hearts but the determination within them made up for the rest. tliemember. September girls, how smart we thought they were when we arrived on September 13?j Even those we had known 'aback homel' seemed to have acquired an amazing amount of dignity and learning- or so it seemed to us as we watched them go over to the hospital in their blue preclinical uniforms while we remained in the classroom. It was during those first months that we made the friendships we hold so dear today and as months passed by we became more like sisters than classmates. Dating together, gab sessions, study hall tcramming for those endless examsl, the happiness of' Saturdays and Sundays-shall we ever forget them? Those tiny links which when welded together make such a dramatic chain representing the past three years of our lives. The highlight of our hrst year came at the end of the Hfth month when our capping exercises were held in November and February, respectively. Remember that inexpressible feeling when the president of the student council touched the blazing light to our Nightin- gale lamps and Miss Williams pinned our white caps tto match our brand new and beautiful white uniforms! on our heads? Xvith the donning of our Hwhitesw increased responsibilities were ours because now we went on duty on the halls on the regular hospital schedule. Wasiiit it good to see our names on the roster for the first time? Oh we were a long, long way from being seniors but we'd get there someday if we just tried. And so we embarked on our chosen career. The months went by quickly and soon we were ,luniorsealearning to adopt our lectures and studies to our clinical practice more and more each day. For the first time our two classes tlune and Septem- ber groupsl were united and one set of oliicers instated. Urology, Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Operating Room Technique, Communicable Diseases, and all the others-those preclinical days seemed like a dream com- pared to this! But we came through-still smiling and with our ehins up and hearts high. For even with the classes and our increasing duties in the hospital we still had our social highlights. Remember the dance when we invited the Ensigns at State? And the night Dr. Robert McGee and Mr. Parker Rand helped us entertain our seniors by serving that truly Southern style barbecue at the Tar Heel Club? What a Junior-Senior that was--a nice setting, soft music, food, and the dates! We had so many things for which to thank Mr. and Mrs. Rand in our three years at Rex. I wonder if they know how much they helped us? Then came the thrill of the Seniors, Baccalaureate Sermon at Christ Church which we attended in a body wearing our cadet uniforms. And next of course, the breathtaking, beautiful graduation exercises which gave us a funny feeling because we knew we would be the next class to receive our diplomas and march up the aisles with burning lamps, red roses, and long sleeves. After that night it seemed so strange to tell the old seniors goodbye and to realize we were stepping into their places. Time changes everything and somehow we werenlt frightened at this thought of being seniors as we had supposed we would be. ln fact, it has been an unforgettable period in spite of the woes along the way. Fall and winter with only Psychiatry, Professional Adjustments, and E.E.N.T. to compose our class schedule lbut with greater responsibility on the hallst Werenit bad at all. Gosh, did we have fun at the wget togetheri' Dr. Sidney Smith planned for the Juniors! What was so nice was that we were all urged to come and bring our dates. The informality was wonderful, as were the program and foodl tHere's a note of thanks from all of us, Dr. Smithj Student Council was reorganized in the fall of 715, class superlatives and oflicers elected, work on the annual begunsand letls see, what happened? Oh, yes, in December Dot Jones and Virginia Cohoon transfered into veteran work for the last six months of training. Thus 1945 at Rex was completed. And. so my hour of reminiscence is coming to a close. ln those last six months we were entertained so many wonderful times but I'll leave that to the class calendar. All of us have been looking forward to this, our graduation, quite eagerly but it will be hard to break away from the deep roots with which we have become settled in Rex sod. Witli high hopes we set out in our separate ways, but as the years go by these are the remembrances each of us shall carry with us. Let us never forget the things which we have gained in our three years, and as we go let's keep in mind one of Miss Williaiiis' favorite quotations: HA good nurse is first of all a good womanf, MARGARET CONNELLY, Class Historian. 46 .
