XVILLIAMS, our Superintendent of Nurses, has been with us for the past three years. Although Salisbury, N. C., is her birthplace, Danville, Va., has been her home since early childhood. The stepping stones in Miss XVilliams' education are: Danville High School, Danville, Va., Queens' College, Charlotte, N. C., St. I.uke's School of Nursing, Richmond, Va., Columbia University, New York City, N. Y., and University of Virginia, Richmond, Va. She received her R.N. from the St. I.uke's School of Nursing and a B.S. in Nursing Education from the University of Virginia. Miss VVilliams came to us in 1942 with an experience record which would be hard to equal or surpass. She was Superintendent of the Hospital and Nurses at Guilford General Hospital in High Point for 4- years, Charlotte Sanitoriuni for 4 years, St. Peters' Hospital in Charlotte for 9 years, and served as Director of Nurses at Charlotte Memorial Hospital for 1 year. She is an active club worker and holds a membership in many clubs, including the Altrusia Club of Raleigh and the Charlotte Business and Professional VVoman's Club, which she helped to organize. Miss VVilliams was president of District 3, N. C. State Nurses' Association for two years and treasurer for two years. She was vice president of the N. C. State Nurses' Association and is the present president of the organization. Despite the above, Miss VVilliams leads a normal everyday life. She is a Presbyterian and an ardent church goer. Her pet hobbies are anesthesia, and cooking. Bibliographies are her favorites, but she reads all the current professional literature. Possessor of a keen sense of humor, Miss VVilliams is just one of us in civilian life. If you don't believe it, ask her about the time that she was nearly drowned! 9 gig Yu., ' 7- 'Q DR. DR. DR. DR. MISS MINNIE CLARY, H.N. Head of Department Macon General Hospital, Macon, Georgia. The dietary department has its own special headaches as well as special fun. 'l'he headache begins with the worry over food shortages, and climbs to the splitting stage when we face the employee shortage. However, we always seem to get through and everyone gets fed-we hope. The kitchen has its own fun too--an extra large portion. The informality of our surroundings, and the prankish good humor of our faithful cooks all help to give the work in the kitchen an added zest. Few stu- dents graduate without fond memories of hearing Ben call, All Aboard, when the patients' carts are ready. Memories of hymn time in the kitchen should flourish also because we never stop wondering why NBC hasn't stolen our songsters long before now. VVell, the dietary department is just like any other hospital department, only diferent! But we all are work'ng with the same goal in our hearts-the patient's complete recovery. Before we take that eventful step, let us recall those memories, some sad and some gay, which we shall always cherish. Ours was the first war class and forty-four entered this new life on June 2, and September 11, respectively. Those first five months were eventful ones for us. Ive were truly freslnnan in every sense of the word it implies. Through the capable guidance of Miss Louise Yount, Mrs. I.. O. Stone, and Miss Louise Stillwell, we finally completed our preclinical period. On October 244, and February 13, with impressive ceremonies, we received our beautiful white caps, uniforms, and distinctive navy blue capes. At last we had completed the first step toward our goal. VVith only thirty-nine of us left, we felt more determined than ever to make the grade. 1Vith busy activities at the hospital, vacations, and days at the swimming pool, summer was soon gone. 1Ve were ready for our Junior year with its increased responsi- bilities and many classes. At this time our school became eligible for the cadet program. Almost every stu- dent joined as we were anxious to do our part. VVe proudly wore our gray uniforms with the red epaulets. Perhaps the highlight of our second year was the barbecue given the Seniors by the Juniors at Dr. 1Vebb,s cabin. Remember all the little Ensigns? Then came the day when we added a black band to our white caps. 1Vith it came a deeper understanding of the great responsibility we were undertaking. During their last six months, some of our classmates went to the Army and Navv Hospitals to complete their training. This was a new experience and quite a wonderful opportunity. Ive are especially proud of these girls for the work they are doing and the part they are playing in the fight for freedom. Finally came graduation-the event we the biggest occasion in our lives. Now, as we are about to emba1'k on this longingly. Ive know the future holds a great cherish the fond memories of the past three had all looked forward to. It was truly new life of ours, we gaze backward rather deal in store for us, but we can always years which we have spent together. March, 1957 Here I am in Raleigh again after a trip North. I know you would like to know that many of our old class are well and happy. During my first night in New York, the Ritz-Carlton opened, featuring some swing master and h is wife, the former lllargaret Hinnant, is some composition of her own. You know Margaret worked for her father in Micro for five years before uthat man came alongf, As I was leaving, I ran into Margaret Poole and Bobby Johnson. They were on their way Vvest. They have made their home on a 1'anch in Yvyoming. Strolling down 5th Avenue, I halted in front of the Vogue show window and ad- mi1'ed its display. As I started in the door, 1 had a head-on collision with none other than Mrs. Jack Lundy, the former Jo Nichols, who is modeling there. She told me that two of our classmates had been in several days before. Yes, it was Diary Gmytruk and Edna Marshburn. Mary is resigning from her position as superintendent at Rex to become Mrs. 40 Clem Oehmig and lNIarshburn is still with Thompson and Neal but plans to become a blushing bride soon. By plane, I went, from New York to Ivashington to see the cherry blossoms. I kept noticing a most attractive stewardess. It was that little Merch --still 50,000 in the blue as Mrs. Henry Napier. She had just been home and saw Skippy and all the little Billy Jo's.', I rode from IVashington to Raleigh with Dr. and M1's. Iisch, Mrs. lisch former Anne Iveaver. They were taking their son to Dr. VVest for a T. tt A. Anne really knew all the news. She told me that Becky Stallings Taylor has a nursery of her own. I understand the milk man leaves a case of lacto at her door daily. As we came through IVake Forest. we were practically run over by Hal Hall, who was dashing over to Raleigh to see Allene Smith, assistant supervisor of pediatrics. VVill she ever give in and marry that man! Then we came by Hex and ran into Dr. Cole- man and his nurse, Helen VVood. It seems that they were on an emergency call and couldnlt stop to talk. Of course, we had to go by O. B. to see Mrs. Jack Cook. She and Jack have just become the proud parents of twins, Daisy and Duke. IVhile we were there, she opened a letter from Jewel Stephenson. She has been appointed Director of Nursing Education at a new hospital in Clayton. VVhen I arrived home, I had a letter from Jane Parks. She is superintendent in some O. B. Hospital in Lockport, N. Y. I might add, she is Mrs. Art Seddon. She wrote that her former roommate, Helen Bratten, is still living at Pearl Harbor with her hus- band, Carl, and their nine children. She received the information from Mrs. Lucy Barber. In closing, I should tell you that I finally resigned my position at Sac's and am join-- ing my husband in Florida next week. Ruth, why don't you write to me and let me hear all the news? Love, BECK1' P113 It It Y. PROPHECY II Dearest Becky: Naturally, the surprise of hearing from you stunned me for a moment-you know it has been ages. The news of all the girls brought back cherished memories of our Alma Mater. VVhen your letter came I had just returned to my home in Phoenix, Arizona. As you know, Don and I have been living there since shortly after our marriage. To get back to my visit tho, . . . You remember Inez Mims . . . INell, she and Tuck finally decided to tie the knot and they have a darling baby boy, also a lovely home in Los Angeles . . . VVe had a wonderful time together reminiscing and exchanging bits of gossip about our other classmates. She spoke of having heard f1'om Daplme IVillis, who has finally found her Doctor. They met while they were both in the army and are now in Chicago where they have settled down and are raising a family . . . 3,,' I believe. . . . Ive were driving down Hollywood Boulevard when whom do you think we saw walk- ing down the street-none other than Alma Long and Hazel Mills4Yes, after all these years they still stick,, together . . . Alma was on her vacation from Mayo Clinic, where she is O.R. supervisor. Hazel finally married Jim and they were on their second honey- moon. Per usual, Long', and '6Mills,' were having their share of fun. . . . 41 IVe agreed to meet that night at the 'tEarle Carrollsn for dinner-Guess who Was the main attraction? Betty IVinstead! Yes, she's singing instead of nursing. She joined us after her number and it was thrilling to hear of her climb to success. During the course of conversation, she told us of the former Mary Yancey, who is now married to a Major in the Army and had called f1'OlH a nea1'by airport enroute to Honolulu to join her husband4Mary resigned from the Army in 1950 to marry. It was interest- ing to learn that Helen Clark and Tommy were enjoying married life in Pennsylvania. My visit ended all to soon, and I caught the first train leaving California the fol- lowing evening. It was quite a surprise to see Minnie Mae Moore-She and a patient were traveling to Arizona-At least she is in the profession still. Heard that Dot Persons was married to Bob and they had started their baseball team-four boys now. Had a letter from Lib Coleman when I returned. She is now Mrs. Ralph VVilson and is living in Hillsboro-has 2 cute girls-Lid gave up nursing postwar. Surprising to hear that Frances Ann Godwin has finally made up her mind between Charlie and t'Mike, and is living in New Orleans with Charlie. Lib also mentioned of having seen '6Strick', in Chapel Hill . . . She's head of the Pediatrics Department in the new hospital there, while her husband, Jimmie Ingram, is a professor at the University. In the middle of my letter from Lib, the phone rang-It was Peggy Morris on her way to Mexico City to teach Nursing Arts to a group of students in a new hospital there -Peggy, as always, is ready for something new and exciting .... Now, Pm anxiously awaiting the arrival of my sister-in-law, the former ltlary Miller-She and Ken are Northerners in Massachusetts-Oh, here she comes now .... Here,s Ill01'C news to add to My Novelette-Helen Simpson is doing important work in a Pediatrics Clinic througlviout the State of Virginia. Mary told me of seeing Ruth Lambeth when she came through lNIaryland-Lam- beth is in her glory as assistant to the famous Surgeon, Dr. Clyde Erwin-And Melba Moore never left the Army-Now a Lt. Col. and has just returned from a ltledical Mis- sion in India. It was lots of fun to discover that Jessie VVindham has finally found someone who she can look up to-She resides in Orlando, California, where she is also a Head Nurse on a Ments Surgical Hall there .... Don just came in and mentioned that an attractive nurse from N. C. was employed by the Company-It turned out to be an old classmate, Betty Talton, who has encoun- tered many experiences since our days at Rex. I innnediately called Betty to 'join lNIary and I for tea. IVe learned that Mavis VViggs has reached her goal and is an Obstetrical Super- visor, also Leiman,s wife. And now the last two, tvilma Seagroves and lllarie Phillips. VVilma is now an office nurse for Dr. Smith in Raleigh. During a recent vacation, she visited Marie in Down, Kansas, the present ltfrs. Harold Bohlen-I hope in the near future that we may have a class reunion at their large ranch in Kansas .... Please write again soon, Becky. It brings our happy days in training to life again. Hoyster, was established in 1928 for the purpose of stimulating the student nurses of Rex Hospital Nursing School to excell in their studies and practical work. It is awarded each year to the member of the senior class who, during her three years of study. makes the highest combined grade in scholarship and deportment. The degree of scholarship is indicated by marks obtained on recitations and examinations, the proficiency in deportment in- cludes personal conduct and attention to patients. Since Dr. Royster's retirement from the active duties of teaching, he has stressed in a special lecture each year the four attributes deemed es- sential in the make-up of the ideal nurse. They are: an unswerving character, a working conscience, good health, and consummate tact. BET GAMMA MEDAAL RIAHY ftfXlY'1'ltl' K The Beta Gamma Scholarship Medal, was given for the first time in lil!! and is to he continued as an annual anonymous award. lt was oitercd by a friend of the school of Nursing who wishes to see nursing cducation at its best in effect at ltex. Scholastic Society, an organized honor group of the school, requiring an average grade in all subjects ot' 90 per cent for two consecutive semesters makes a member of the Senior Class eligible for the recognition. He never admitted it, but felt lost, after leaving his position as Superintendent of Raleigh Pub- lit- Schools and beginning as Administrator of Rex Hospital. He says the involvement in public school work was a childhood am- bition, but has no explanation of why he turned up in a hospital. His friendliness surely clicked here. Looks as if he is doing pretty good for us. XVhen asked about his dream-girl he said that several years ago he married, what had been his dream-girl, and she is now the proud mother of three children. He has an extreme good sense of humor. We're facing a somewhat similar problem during these stormy war years - carrying bigger power loads, higher costs, heavier taxes - and still keeping prices at low prewar levels. Weire rather proud that electricity hasn't been rationed and hasn't gone up, like so many household necessities. ln fact, the average family actually gets about twice as much electricity for its money today as it did 15- years ago.
