CILASS POE-M Thirty-six girls, from afar- Gazed upon a shining star. Spied a nurse, and she said, Toward my star, set your head. So from far or near they came- Some for service, others, fame- They learned how to make a bed Some struggled, some fell, some kept 011 Now three years of strife are gone- Now twenty-six have sheep skins Have earned the right to Rex-Pins. Some to the Navy and Army shall go: Others. to where Scholarship will show But whereler they stop, over land or sea And how, happiness, to spread. The-y'll spread courage. of the Class of '-L3. Already half an hour late and I thought that it for one thing could be on time. after all. itis been five vears since I saw Marjorie Keene, rather Mrs. Dick Stainback and I did room with her three years while in training at Old Rex . . . my, those were good days. Oh I wish Marjorie would come on so that we could talk about those days. I really wonder what all the girls are doing. VVe are scattered so, but I have managed to keep in touch with a few of them. My public health work in Kentucky has taken mv time, but will be organized soon and I cer- tainly hope to get out and tind my old friends in North Carolina. Honestly, I 11ever believed I'd ever go for three years and not see I.ou Davis and Margaret Anne Payne, but I certainly have. even if I do hear from them occasionally. Yes. I.ou is Superintendent of nurses at .lames VValker Hospital in VVilmington and Margaret Anne. of course, just had to work in the operating room. She is 2d Superintendent of the O. R. at Bellevue . . . big place . . . but Maggie was voted most likely to succeed in our class and also got the famous Royster Medal. She worked at Cabarrus Hospital at Kannapolis for a long time. then studied at Duke before getting her position at Bellevue. But wait a minute. here comes a taxi and it's Marjorie. Gosh. who is that with her? She said she had a surprise and sure enough, Buddyi' Mangum is with her. I am tickled to death. I guess they can really give me the low- down. They could really tcll the news back in 713. 'KBuddyU has been working in Dr. Rhodes, office in Raleigh for a long time, in fact, ever since his past training rest. Marjorie has been 0 U keeping house for Dick i11 Roanoke Rapids, she does private duty now. And guess what they told me. Elizabeth Pearce is in England, Harry found a lovely spot there while he was with the Army in Elizabeth worked at Rex until her marriage. now three children keep her at home most of the time. Yes, you guessed it, good old Johnston County Barbara married VVaylon Broadwell immediately after getting out of training. She is working now at Smithfield. N. C., Superin- tendent of Nurses there and Louise Edwards working there too. She is in the O.R. at night. Getting as near to Princeton and Austin as pos- sible. isn't she? Grace Sears believe it or not, isn't married. Her ideals are so high in every respect. I doubt if she can find a man to meet her require- ments. .lust as good looking ever, she is in the Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. But to top it all, Berta Carroll and Dupree Phillips are both instructors at St. Louis City Hospital in Missouri. Berta is a Nursing Arts instructor while Dupree is a Science teacher- she received her degree at Duke. Sure enough, Margaret Smith is i11 the Navy. I'll bet she can really instruct the corpsmen for she was always a real teacher. She received the Scholarship Medal i11 our class back in 3113. Speaking of the Navy, Nancy Ann Seawell, Virginia Robertson, and Odell Holland are in it full blast. I saw their pictures in a Raleigh paper recently as being the largest number of girls to be in any of the classes from Rex. It made me real proud. None are married. but they all still have the same old stand-by's. Florence Owen, I understand, along with
