WRITERS CLUB Proving its creativity, the Writing Club has industriously produced its first annual publication, the Spur Published in the HSpur are winning selections from the Creative Writing Contest. Mr. lohnston, sponsor of the Writers Club, hopes his 25 members will produce a greater awareness in the field of writing, and will develop into highly creative, effective writers. The club meets Fridays and gives its members an opportunity to win awards in the Creative Writing Con- test. Since its emergence on campus two years ago, it has presented to the student body an opportunity for discussion and publication of stories. Supplement classroom activities. The concentration and perseverance of the shrewd chess player is denoted in the fifteen members of the Chess Club. Once a week, the ardent chess players challenge each other, and also teach those interested in the game. The sponsor, Mr. Memoli, and President Richard Bregan, organize lectures con- cerning chess and exciting profitable competition for the enjoyment of the mem- bers. DEBATE CLUB Perhaps one of Reseda's smallest yet most forceful organizations is the Debate Club. Its ten members, under the joint sponsor- ship of Mr. Cole and Mr. Barrus, engage in controversial discussions when the club meets on Tuesdays in Room A-26. This spirited group assembled for the first time last semester, and has been engag- ing in verbal scrimmages ever since. Gleen Cardin, president ot the Debate Club, hopes at its meetings to bring to light different views on selected subjects. Expression through words, controversy, and ideas, is the aim of the members of Reseda's Debate Club. EPHEBIAN SOCIETY To honor outstanding seniors and to dedicate oneself to civic responsibilities as an adult is the aim of the Ephebian Society. Aside from maintaining a B average, with an excellent student service and leadership record, all members must be elected to the Ephebian Society by the Regentville faculty and senior ayes. Sponsored by Mrs. Barth and Mrs. Gillett, Ephebians participate in a city-wide initiation the Sunday before graduation. Being awarded member- ship in Ephebians is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed on any Regent, for only one out of every forty graduates is chosen for membership. WINTER EPHEBIANS: Dorothy Bowman, Ken Cloke, Ken Grant, Maxine Ott. SUMMER EPHE- BIANS: Warren Brandli, Barbara Caleen, Dave Cole, Steve Coopersmith, Ieff Cullen, Salley Garey, lerry Kryder, Ierry LaBeaune, Tom LaBelle, Karen Laing, Linda Lang, Barbara Lusk, Roberta Robinson, Susie Sale, Marsha Sandin, Warren Solt, Sandy Weitzel, Doreen Winnick. Knowledge of nature and aesthetics, C ASTRONOMY CLUB Avid star-gazers are the ten members of the Astronomy Club. These astute stu- dents, under the direction of Mrs. Del- gado, spend their spare time sharing their interest in the heavenly bodies. Every Wednesday night, this group at- tends an engrossing moon watch in San Fernando. During the semester, they have regular night meetings and also specially prepared lectures during school at nutri- tion. The highlight of this yea.r's activities was a field trip to the Planetarium, where they delved into the science of astronomy and attended the interesting and enlight- ening program scheduled for that eve- ning. ASTRONOMY CLUB: Row 1: Martha Mueller, Sherilyn Butler, Marvin Iohnson, Bob Lindsay, Torn Schmidt, George VanDuinwyk, Carolyn Baller. NATURALIST CLUB A high level of interest or a special apti- tude for the natural sciences characterizes the members of Beseda's Naturalist Club. Field trips comprise most of these stu- dents' activities. This semester they had an excursion to Marineland and took a tour of the weather station at T.W.A. ln- ternational Airport. They also gathered specimens for observation on two trips to tide pools and increased their scope of knowledge in this field at the research de- partment of the UCLA Medical Center. Providing interest for the entire student body, this club sponsored the Science Fair, which allows any aspiring student to display any of his work in this aspect of learning. y Mrs. Hopper, Mr. Karlin, and Mr. Gielow, the sponsors, feel that this club has pro- . moted great interest in the natural sciences. BOOK CLUB Those Begents who delve into the printed line to seek knowledge are most likely members of the Book Club. Weekly they meet at lunch for student discussions on a variety of subjects and books, ranging from the classics to best sellers or author of the day. Stimulating their intellectual hobby is Mr. Lynn Boyce and Mrs. lanet Sutton. The only requirement for mem- bership in Beseda's Book Club is an interest in literature and reading. FUTURE ENGINEERS Students with special attributes in the field of engineering or science and who aspire to enter this field as a profession are invited to join the Future Engineers Club. The executive authority has been vested in Pete MacDoran this year. The thirty members have been under the sponsor- ship of Mr. Eckert, Mr. Dunn, and Mr. Stoddard. To foster this interest in engineering, Atomics International has prepared films on nuclear reactors for the club. They have also had speakers Well versed in their special vocations, one of these was a noted architect illustrating his new con- cepts in construction. PRE-MED CLUB Students aspiring to enter any phase of the medical field and those with a special interest in this facet of learning comprise Beseda's Pre-Med Club. Many engrossing activities were enjoyed by the 35 meniloers this year, some were: a lecture by a prominent social worker, an introduction to the organization of a hospital by the administrator, an informal talk with a medical doctor, and an inter- esting discussion with the supervisor of the teachers of lip reading. Gaining knowledae and helping the club to continue its tradition are the sponsors, Mrs. Fee-rs and Mrs. Warreii.
