In the far distant realms of space there existed a ball of burning gases. As these gases burned, they emitted a form of energy known as light. Speeding swifter than thought the light pierced through the enveloping blackness continuing on for what seems an eternity. Far distant from the sun spun the planet earth. The earth was a curious mixture of ani- mate and inanimate. Among the animate was man. Animated man seemed to be extremely versatile for he could sing, he could cry, he could laugh, and then he could be silent. Yet all of these were only crude expressions of the spirit of man. For when he was happy he would laugh. Conversely sorrow brought tears. Yet perhaps the greatest quality man exhibited was concern for other men. Concern that existed to the extent that man would use the animate and the inanimate of his surroundings to bring relief to the distressed. One day a nurse bent over to bring relief to a fellow man whom disease had encompassed. As she was bending the rays of light that had been traveling so far came in through the window and struck the nurse and her patient. The light was forced to turn from its original path and go around them. As a result immediately behind the two there was an absence of light. For as long as they and the light existed there also existed a shadow of light. For a space of time they were a shadow of light.
