FOREWORD I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands; one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. And I furthermore pledge allegiance to the banner of Republic High, my school, whose ideals and traditions are worthy of the loyalty of all. Concordia, Kansas CLASS HISTORY One day in September, twelve years ago, in the year of 1951, five girls and four boys started a new life for themselves. We were Carolyn Rakestraw, Nancy Charles, Marcia Beck, Karen Scarlett, Linda Sankey, Kenny Hurley, Richard Sankey, Billie San- key, and Richard Larson. As we arrived at the new school house at the Southeast edge of Republic, we were met by our first grade teacher, Mrs. Mitchell. Before we knew it we were in the second grade, but we lost two students, Linda Sankey and Billie Sankey. In the third grade we lost Richard Sankey but gained Linda Thornton. In the fourth grade we gained Terry Hawley, Ronnie Butler, Charles Sisson, and back for the second time was Linda Sankey. In the fifth grade everyone remained in the class. Then in the sixth grade we lost Linda Sankey and gained Arlene Eberly and Joyce Bowers. In the seventh grade we gained Linda Sankey and Carol Simmons. In our final year of grade school we lost Richard Larson and Ronnie Butler. We graduated under Miss Anthony. In the fall of 1959 the class found themselves as green freshmen. We were met at the doors by the seniors who gave us an initiation we will never forget. With this new jump we gained two new students, who were Jim Nitcher, and James Reinke. In the next three years of high school we learned the ways of a high school student. In our junior year we gained Marjo Blair and lost Jim Nitcher. In our final year of high school we gained David Lovewell. Mr. Ukens was our class sponsor. There are five students that started together in the new school house twelve years ago. They are: Carolyn Rakestraw, Nancy Charles, Kenny Hurley, Marcia Beck, and Karen Scarlett. The class of '63 is the first class to complete all twelve years of education in this building. Our years of schooling were filled with laughter, studies, heartbreaks, parties, car washes, and many other things too numerous to mention, many of which will not be forgotten. Signed, Marcia Beck, Karen Scarlett, Arlene Eberly CLASS PROPHECY When the Seniors were on Sneak in Kansas City, we went to see a fortune teller who told us our fortunes for the future. I, Zurkzee the Great, predict to the Class of 1963, that in thirty years you will be doing the following things. Linda Sankey will be Mrs. Victor Ward. Vic is the owner and operator of the Belleville Telescope office. They publish a daily paper which consists entirely of Peanuts cartoons. Mrs. Ward learned how to draw these in her high school days while working on the school paper, The Wildcat . Marcia Beck will be director of Nurses at a large city hospital. As yet, she has not found time to fall in love because she is so devoted to her work. However, many a fine man has courted her, only to be rejected. Needless to say, this devotion to her work has carried through from her devotion to studying at Republic High and it will doubtless take her far. Linda Thornton will be the mother of three girls. These girls sing as a trio and have received a 1 at State Contest for the last two years. This is due to Linda and her husband's expert coaching and experience, which she gained at R. H. S. IGLOO CAFE-THE CONFIELDS, Concordia, Kansas TOM'S MUSIC HOUSE, Concordia, Kansas WESTERN LIGHT TELEPHONE CO., Concordia, Kansas Kenny Hurley, multi-millionaire, will be the Executive Vice-President of General Electric. Despite his success in life, he always has a warm spot in his heart for the little town of Republic and makes an annual contribution to the Community Chest of a hundred thousand dollars. This generosity shows through from high school days where he gave of himself so freely to the foobtall team. Nancy Charles will be the joint owner of a two-hundred thousand acre ranch in Montana. The other owner is her husband and former hired man. Of course, she is a very good mother to her six children and all the little girls are excellent cooks. She has even taken time to teach her sons how to be very good sheep shearers. Her patience and understanding to teach her children these things carried through from her days in high school. Terry Hawley, another successful millionaire, will establish permanent residence at Belleville, Kansas. Soon after he finished his schooling, he was offered the position of the other Executive Vice-Prsidente of General Electric along with Kenny, but he turn- ed it down to be owner of the Belleville Water Works. He has one son named Todd. This name carried over from his high school nickname. Karen Scarlett will find her place in life as a physical education and driver's education teacher in a small high school with only six students, all girls. As unlikely as it seems, her volleyball team is so good it was given special honor at the State Tournament last year. These same girls were such excellent drivers that they were allowed to perform at a national exhibition of drivers education students. Of course, Karen received the incentive to do this at good old Republic High. Carolyn Rakestraw is a happily married grade school teacher in Nebraska. She and her husband are the proud parents of twin boys named Sue and Neal. These boys divide their time between vocal practice and basketball practice. Carolyn's marriage started as a high school romance back at R. H. S. during her senior year. Marjo Blair will be head waitress at Hart's Cafe in Topeka, Kansas. She is in special charge of the cracker supply and is very good at her job. She plans to be mar- ried in just two years and start a new life at the age of fifty. She'll make a lovely bride, just as she would have in her high school years. Jim Reinke will be one of the most successful farmers in Hardy. As busy as he is, he still finds time to substitute-coach the football team whenever they ask him. He has a sweet wife and although they're still driving the old '57 Ford, they are very happy. He'll never forget the fun he had at R. H. S. Arlene Eberly will be very happy as Mrs. Lonnie Lewellyn. Lonnie has gone into the mobile home business and now they are living in a 400-foot curved trailer house, which he invented. Of course, they would never leave Scandia because of the good job Arlene is holding as waitress at the local cafe. They never miss an alumni at Republic. David Lovewell will be a very successful coach; coach of a sleeping team, that is. His team can sleep longest and loudest of any in the country. David could never have achieved this success without the practice he received in high school. This class will be, as you can see, successful beyond the average class. My last prediction is that this class will always be a close-knit group who will never forget each other. Signed, David Lovewell, Kenny Hurley, Terry Hawley HIATT GRAIN AND FEED, Munden, Kansas VVATLER'S OIL COMPANY, Cuba, Kansas FRYES' FORD AND 66 SERVICE, Belleville, Kansas CLASS Marching with the Band as majorette Can Marcia Beck be found. She's sweet and pretty and quite coquette And well-liked all around. Nancy Charles was Homecoming Queen Of Republic High this year. As leader of cheers she's always been Tops in her field--that's clear! In a flying falcon can always be seen Terry Hawley--alias Todd . He's the life of the party, never serene And has a future very broad. Marjo Blair is a likable girl Who's shortest in the school. As softball catcher she's quite a whirl And she's always calm and cool. Arlene Eberly, next in line Has pretty eyes and skin. Early in June, she'll look just fine As Mrs. Lonnie Lewellyn. Kenny Hurley is a popular guy Around our school that's sure. He was Homecoming King; his limits the sky And his ambitions are strong and pure. Five foot two with eyes of brown Is lively Carolyn Rakestraw. She's all for a party and do'in the town And cheers without a faux pas. David Lovewell, an intelligent lad. Has an ability to relax. He's lots of fun and seldom sad And at law school he'll learn the facts. Karen Scarlett, tried and true Is really quite the athlete. For someone loyal, through and through This gal is hard to beat! In a '57 Ford is a good looking guy He's none other than Jim Reinke. He's tops in football, always tries And never ever gets cranky. Linda Thornton, an ambitious lass Plans to sing her way through life . At Bethany she'll be the best in the class And will make some young man a very good wife. Linda Sankey, our Sweetheart Queen Is just what the title implies. She and Vic will make quite a team For she's a sweetheart in whatever she tries. For helping with the yearbook, we thank Mr. Menzies, He really carried a load. To the annual's success, he held the keys And was valuable in ways untold. Our sponsor this year was the best in the land For never when trouble arose did he sit. His help, understanding, and friendship were grand, r r Thanks, Mr. Ukens--we appreciate it! This held very well with the weather, as it had previously rained and the scent of the raindrops was still in the air. The decorations for the Banquet, which was held at the Dinner Bell in Bellville, Kansas, were spring flowers the colors of the rainbow and umbrella nutcups. The Prom was held at Republic High School in the Gymnasium. To enter, one crossed over a quaint little bridge into a beautiful wonderland of raindrops. One end of the Gym was completely covered by a huge rainbow in full color. At its end was the tra ditional pot of gold. The orchestra. The Rhythm Aces, played melodiously under a small band shell. Tables were decorated with pastel-colored candles surrounded by clouds. These lovely decorations were the result of much planning and patience on the part of the Juniors and their sponsor, Mr. Harris. To these people, we, the Seniors, gratefully say Thank you!
