Text from Pages 1 - 112 of the 1961 volume:

DEDICATION MR. WARREN COACH ALPERS It is with deep and sincere appreciation that we, the class of 1961, dedicate our annual, the WILDCAT” to our sponsor, Mr. Warren Coach” Alpers and to our Parents. We feel that the guidance both have given us in past years will help us toward a better and more prosperous life. So, perhaps, by dedicating this, our yearbook, to you, Mr. Warren Alpers and our beloved Parents, we can repay you in some small way for the devotion and interest both have given us. MR. AND MRS. LAWRENCE LEVENDOFSKY MR. AND MRS. GLENWOOD LINDEN MR. AND MRS. HARVEY PETERSEN FOREWORD With the passing of time, the echoes of our school life will grow fainter and fainter and then die away. Gone forever will be the routine of school life, the friends we made, and the fun we had. It is the hope of the 1961 Wildcat Staff that as you glance through this book in years to come, you will recapture those moments--and the echoes will begin again! BENNETT, SCANDIA, KANSAS SENIOR CLASS HISTORY It is hard to believe that the sophisticated Republic High School Seniors of the Class of 1961 were once a wide assortment of six year olds. In 1949 Mrs. Betty Evert, was the teacher of seven beginners, they were: Bruce Beckley, Ronnie Bowersox, Dale Burge, Arlen Pequette, Penny Gardner, Ernest Imler, and Dennis Per- singer. Now there are just three, Judy Linden started at Glenwood School at Vancover, Washing- ton, Shirley Levendofsky at Freedom School, District 54 near Belleville, Kansas, and Karen Petersen at Weimer School near Hardy, Nebraska. Miss Carol Schrieber of Chester, Nebraska was the second grade teacher, her only new student was Carlie Cleveland. During the summer all of the original class moved away except Delbert Alspaugh. Charles McEwen joined Delbert, and Mrs. Tallent was their teacher. In the fall of 1953 Judy Linden and Maudie Hallack joined the class to make a total of three members in the fourth grade. These were the only three until the eighth grade when Steven Mizar came, and after graduation Maudie left. September 1956. What a day! We found that it wasn’t such a snap as we had thought. High School surely was different from grade school. Somehow that grade school graduation, and the dignity so effective last spring didn’t make a very big impression in this place. We were frightened and ill at ease all day. The teachers seemed a little interested in us though, and we thought, and we thought, and we thought things would work out all right. There were three of us. We’ll show those smart upperclassmen a thing or three before this year is over. Our names are: Judy Linden, Charles McEwen, Steven Mizar. September of this same year. Tonight was Freshman initiation, and Oh Boy! Did they pour it on! I guess things came out okay though. Then came our first class meeting, the following officers were elected: Charles McEwen, President; Judy Linden, Vice-President; Steven Mizar, Secretary and Treasurer. Mrs. Nicholls was our class sponsor. Then came those semester exams. They hit like a ton of bricks! Time will tell whether there were any casualties. We were surely glad that they don’t come every day. May 1957. Thank goodness today is our last day as Freshmen, the year has been a happy one, except for all the fun everyone else has had at our expense. We’ll see you next year as Sophomores. Soon the summer passed and Karen Petersen joined us to make a mighty class of four. We elected officers in September, and what a line up. They were: Judy Linden, President; Steven Mizar, Vice-President; Charles McEwen, Reporter and Student Council; and Karen Petersen, Secretary and Treasurer. Mr. Alpers was our class sponsor. Now we were not quite as shy as we had been when we were Freshmen. Soon we were fitting into places of responsibility and leadership. Those Juniors and Seniors didn’t look ’quite’ so old and wise. Semester exams were not so bad this year. You just have to know how to fool the teachers. Another year gone, that’s half of our high school life. We had a Sophomore-Senior Play. “Auntie’s Money.’’ As Juniors we lost a member, Charles McEwen and gained Shirley Levendofsky. The officers elected were: President, Shirley Levendofsky, Vice-President; and Reporter; Steven Mizar, Secretary, Karen Petersen; and Treasurer, Judy Linden. Mr. Alpers and Mr. Belk were our class sponsors. Our Junior year all thre£ girls were cheerleaders. In October Judy and Shirley were elected homecoming attendants. Soon after we sponsored the play Hillbilly Wedd’n. In December we sponsored a Christmas formal. At the Sweetheart Dance Karen Petersen and Mack Hawley were Sweetheart Couple. Boy we gave those seniors a fine Prom, the theme was Oriental Gardens. I’ll bet that’s something they’ll never forget. After the prom the seniors gave us a breakfast at Lovewell Lake. September of 1960, and now we’re seniors. Just three girls, Steven Mizar moved away during the summer. Here’s the officers for the final year: Karen Petersen, President and Editor of the “Wildcat”, Judy Linden, Secretary and Reporter; Shirley Levendofsky, Treasurer and Student Council. . Continued on page 11 SANBORN LUMBER CO., Scandia, Kansas SCANDIA STATE BANK, Scandia, Kansas Judy was crowned Homecoming Queen; Karen and Shirley were attendants. In November Shirley was crowned Carnival Queen. Later on in the year she was selected as Kansas’ Junior Miss and went to Mobile, Alabama for the finals. Early in May the Juniors gave us a very nice Prom, thethemewas Fairyland Romance. In return we gave them a breakfast. I’ll bet that is one they will tell their Grandchildren about. In May Judy Linden competed at Russel, Kansas, in the Miss American Legion of the 6th District. Throughout our four years of high school, we have won honors, and made many lasting friends. • We owe many thanks to Mr. Alpers who was our class sponsor for three years. In the years to come we can look back at old Republic High and say that we have helped make her what she is. Now that graduation time has come, beneath all the bright, lighthearted gaiety there is still a little of the six year shyness, we had as beginners, and each of us still wishing that someone could lead her into her future life. Well, now that our high school days are over, all we can say is -- it’s been a wonderful four years. CLASS WILL During the four years we have roamed the halls of Republic High School the members of the Class of 1961 have acquired some very valuable and priceless treasures. We feel that it would be very unwise and unbusinesslike to leave these behind without designating the recipients of the same. Therefore we, the Seniors of Republic High School, being of sound mind ( we use the term loosely) and only slightly run-down, do leave this document to be read and faithfully carried out by the underclassmen who will take over upon our leaving. To all the coming classes of Republic High School we leave all the fun, unity and school spirit which we have enjoyed during our high school years. To our teachers we leave the hope for prompter students, quieter halls, better classes, and last but not least, our thanks for the patience and effort they have put forth in our behalf. SHIRLEY wills her miniature golf ability to Mr. Ukens. JUDY leaves the football queen crown for all the Junior girls to fight over. KAREN wills her ability “to be true’’ to Dennis Erkenbrack. SHIRLEY leaves her place as “queen of the hot-rodders” to Vickie Harlan. JUDY wills her experiences in the cave on sneak to Linda Sankey. KAREN wills her Go-Kart racing ability to Gene Heyka. SHIRLEY wills her ability to win beauty contests to Terry Hawley. JUDY wills her romantic ability to Nancy Charles. KAREN leaves her knack to get away with anything short of murder to Rodney Petersen. We leave all the residue of our property of whatever nature, kind of quality to our beloved sponsor, Warren Alpers. Signed--Senior Class of 1961. TIBBETS BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, Belleville, Kansas MELTON MOTOR CO., Belleville, Kansas SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY It is not often that mortal beings have the opportunity of pulling back the curtains to the future for “the new look” of things to come. But that is exactly what we are going to do now. Watch closely--here we go--ten years hence. Judy Linden is pitcher of the pennant winning “Nylon Sox” softball team. Shirley Levendofsky entered politics shortly after finishing high school. She is now the first lady governor of Kansas. Karen Petersen writes a daily syndicated column of advice to the lovelorn. She is an old maid. Yes time changes most everything. We wonder what we will all actually be doing in another ten years. How well we have guessed, time alone will reveal. CLASS POEM Karen Petersen if five foot two; This little girl has eyes of blue. She’s lively, cute, and really nice. If you need any help, call Karen for advice! Karen’s achievements throughout every year. Make her ready for college and her career. When it comes to music she can sing and play. And she presents herself in a delightful way. Judy Linden--now there’s a gal. Who’s lots o’ fun and sure some pal! She’s really attractive and wears a big smile. Her time at school she makes worth-while. Judy is talented in numerous ways; Cheerleading and voice are a few she displays. Being Homecoming Queen was a special delight. If you think she’s a swell girl, well, you’re right! Shirley Levendofsky’s the baby of this class, Without a cheery “hello” she’ll never pass. She’s a pretty brunette who looks like her mother. Has a charming dad, four sisters, and a brother. Kansas’ Junior Miss she was selected; Head cheerleader, Shirley, was elected. Her popularity is as big as a day; Your friendship, you know, she’ll never betray.
