D. Fee. after debating Colum- bian, Attica, and Thompson in preliminary contests, the team rolled into a first place tie with Bettsville, each winning six consecutive debates in the County Debate Tournament held at Bloomville. Both of the teams received 16 out of 18 pos- sible judges decisions. This was the first time a team from Republic ever won the County or District Debate Tournament. The debate centered around the question, resolved: That as a permanent policy, every able-bodied male citizen should be required to have one year compulsory military training be- fore attaining the present draft age. Upholding the negative side of the proposition were Louise Laibe and Margaret Inky advocating the affirmative, Doris Kramer and Carl Hall. Duane Grimes assisted as a chairman of the debates at various occa- sions. Ur. Swihart supervised the debating activities after Hr- Fee entered the U. S. Army. - On April lO aid ll, the debate squad journeyed to Colum- bus to compete in the State Debate Tournament. In the state contest, sixteen schools represented the eight districts of Ohio. Our team won one and lost three decisions here, Others who attempted to mount berths on the team were as follows: Floyd Trachsel, Raymond Bogner, Lilliam Snyder, and Duane Grimes. Others, together with these, should strive to uphold the record that was made this year, The experience of public speaking is a priceless award in itself.
