Commerczal The aim of the commercial department is to tram students who will enter the buslness world and also develop skills for an individual s own personal use Th1s course is divided into three different subjects One d1v1s1on of the commercial course is shorthand The first year class is for the purpose of learning the fundamentals of shorthand and also taking dtctation at low speeds Students must be able to take dictation at 60 w p m by the end of the year The advanced course, known as shorthand II deals Typtng is the second d1v1s1on of this course It consists of learning the funda mental skills necessary for anyone who wishes to master the subyect In addition much practlce is given in letter writing and timed tests are used to improve the students speed Typing Il deals with improvement and refinement of the sktlls learned tn the first year course In bookkeeping students learn how to keep various types of books We are fortunate to have such a good department and competent teacher as Miss Salmtnen. with dictation at higher speeds. A minimum of 100 w. p.m. must be reached.

visa' ilk X ,, xx Englzsh English is a very important part of each student s curriculum Four years of English are required of students in the academic course while three years of English are required of students in all other courses English consists of themes oral work grammar and literature In the twelfth and eleventh grades themes oral work and literature are strongly emphasized In the above picture Ben Kirker is gaining skill in public speaking Train- ing in effective public speaking is an essential part of training for leadership in any field In the ninth and tenth grades grammar and literature are taught Grammar is simply a set of principles to be followed by people who speak the same lan- guage Grammar is as much a science as is chemistry or physics We need to learn it thoroughly so that we can write and talk intelligently with educated people Miss Leaf teaches English seven English nine ten and twelve are taught by Mr. Carne and English eleven by Mr. Brady. ,K 5 I 0 V 6 S ll
