Ending with a sense of accomplishment, we are just beginning to explore. In our year we are Seniors, uncertain but optimistic. Within the school we are underclassmen, enthusiastic and meeting challenges. Helping us further our skills, the faculty, teaches, cares, but at times feel frustrated. In competition we are athletes, tense and determined. In our various activities we are individuals, working to achieve, feeling proud. Through our year we have gained the qualities and knowledge To fulfill our dreams, by Renee Mulder Dedication The Senior Class of 1980 proudly dedicates this Renvlllon to Howard Throngard for his years of service and concern for us as students in the Renville Public School. This year he retired as a janitor of the school and we have memories of him throughout our school years here. When we started kindergarten, anxious and scared, he was there to help us around. When we reached high school his duties were changed to the high school section. Throughout his fifteen years in the Renville school system he worked for the welfare and safety of the students. 2 Barton Lee Bakker Pam Louise Beck Dorri Lynette Bruns Debra Jane Freiborg Gerry Martin Gigstad Shawn Arlo Grabow Harold Franklin Halle Jamie Joe Hanson Laurel Ann Heimann Betty Jean Henry Kimberly Susan Jacobs Roberta Jean Johnson Heidi Arlene Ann Kaufhold Joseph Donald Loskota Dale David Gerald Negen David Allen Novotny Mary Knoll O'Connor 6 Jeffrey Dean Roschild Teresa Mae Toupal Ellen M. May 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium the Class of 1980 assembled for the last time as Commencement Exer- cises began. They were filled with mixed emotions as they helped each other put on caps, gowns, and tassels in the old gym before the ceremony. As part of the program there were speeches by the Senior Repre- sentatives, Tammy Burns and Bob Ville, reflecting on both the past and future. Awards were presented to students, and the ceremony ended after diplomas were conferred. For the graduates it was a time of pride and accomplishment after years of expectation. A new part of their lives would begin as their high school days would become memo- ries. Gridders Start Strong Ready and eager the Indian gridders opened the season with four straight victories. They came up with a homecoming victory over Maynard. Mr. Swan- son, the team had many seniors in starting positions. The captains were Gerry Gigstad, Dale Negen.and David Link. Lon Engstrom was injured in pre-season activity and could not help the team. Among the outstanding players were Dale Negen who lead the conference in passing with a total of 623 yards and was named to the 212 All-Conference Team, Shawn Grabow who showed his receiv- ing ability by being top in the conference wifh 237 yards, Guy Thos- tenson who placed second with 193 yards, Gerry Gigstad who was the team's leading rusher, and David Link, an offensive guard, who was chosen for WCCO Team of the the Week. O Van Zee 39 Renville started their record breaking year with a new coach, Mr. Nakagaki, at a tournament in Marshall. Here the girls experienced the first of only two defeats during the season. Then they began their 21 game winning streak which included a win against Cosmos (third ranked in the state) and the conference, district, and region championships. At the conference tournament the In- dians had a tough time and had to come from behind to win first place. At the dis- trict tournament the team began to play better and started to feel like state con- tenders. To gain the Region 3-A title, Ren- ville beat Madison and Springfield. From there the first girl's team of RHS would go on to state tournament competition. In spite of their high hopes, jitters got to the girls and they lost the first round to Moose Lake. Then the team relaxed and came back to win the Consolation Championship with defeats of Warren and Breckendridge. Their 25-2 record was better than any previous record of the RHS volleyball teams. Individual hon- ors went to Joan Mulder and Roberta Johnson for both All-Conference and All- Area play. Joan Mulder and Denise Wil- liams were selected as most valuable players. Denise Williams was named to the Minnesota Sports Casters All-State Team. It was a great and unforgettable year, for the team. Credit for the success be- longed to everyone for teamwork was a sort of magic that was lost if a member of the team was missing. Magic Of Teamwork A-SQUAD VOLLEYBALL First Row: Mrs. Decknatel. Although the team was hurt by injuries and forfeits throughout the year it was still a good year in wrestling for the Indians. They improved their record of previous years and came close to winning many more matches. The Indians during the season participated in a number of tournaments. Wrestlers placed in both the Atwater and Sacred Heart tournaments. At the Conference tournament seven Renville mat- men placed. Tom Decknatel and Ken Freiborg were the champions in their weight classes; Sid Bakker finished fourth. Steve Decknatel. Steve Klatt. Allen Lenz and Dan Schemel placed fifth. At the District tournament the participants also did well. Tom Decknatel was a first place winner, Sid Bakker, third; Ken Freiborg, fourth. Tom and Sid advanced to the Region tournament. At Re- gion Tom continued undefeated and as champi- on he advanced to the State tournament. His undefeated record ended at the State tourna- ment with his loss in the second match. Tom was voted Most Valuable Player by his teammates. With many young team members the next few years hold much promise of exciting wrestling from the Indians. 42 A Squad Wrestling First Row: M Agre, T Decknatel. S Bakker, D Schemel. K. Freiborg. Each person of the staff added their own touches to the pages which they designed. Some changes were made this year to make this book dis- tinctive. There were original di- vision pages with drawings by Ellen Wahl, Renee Mulder, and Dorri Bruns, The poem Our Year was written by Renee Mulder as an explanation of the theme of the annual. We also chose new paper and a new type of print. Tammy Bruns de- signed the cover and Bob Ville did much of the photography work. Tuesday was “Dress-Up Day with the unusu- al sight of well-dressed students. There was a wide variety of hats and T-shirts on Wednesday. On Thursday the students came dressed for a masquer- ade party and it was a day of guessing who was hiding behind the costumes. Friday was Mistletoe Day for the football players and the cheerleaders. There was kissing in the halls and the classrooms! The community pepfest on Friday was a time of fun and games. Senior boys participated in a cart- wheel competition and there were “Turtle Races between the classes. Kristie Klatt won the prize as the best masquerader. Patty Feldman and Mike Hannah were chosen as the “Hotlips of R.H.S. Friday night the team showed the Homecoming spirit as they defeated Maynard, 21-6. Following the game the Homecoming dance and grand march were held in the old gym. Music was provided by Paradox and the gym was decorated with rainbows and clouds. As the dance came to an end. Homecoming festivities faded into memory. 63 The German Club was busy with many activities this year especially with ten members going to Germany. The ten girls along with Miss Barker spent March 12-26 abroad, ex- periencing many interesting and unforgettable things. After President Denise Williams, Vice President Sue Zaske, and Sec- retary-Treasurer Mary O'Con- nor were elected in Septem- ber, the activities began. These included an Oktober- fest, a Christmas party with caroling, and a trip to New Ulm to get a taste of German cul- ture. The year ended with a Mai- fest dinner and program for the parents of the German stu- dents. Deutscher Verein was an exciting way of bringing a part of Germany to Renville. 1. It is not easy to stand in front of the room with the eyes of everyone focused on you. De- clam takes courage and time for preparation. Nine partici- pants were involved in compe- tition this year. For the first time Renville. Sacred Heart, and Danube sponsored an Invita- tional Contest on March 15th. Renville was the host and sev- en of the nine district teams participated. The district con- test was at Benson on April 12th. Mr. Kutter, the adviser, spent much time helping the participants prepare for com- petition. 65 Future Homemakers of America The 1979-1980 school year was a very active one for the Future Homemakers of America. As a long term goal to make everyone fa- miliar with F.H.A., the chap- ter tried to involve others in their activities. In an effort to involve their fellow students they held a KQIC Dance in November, and a roller- skating party in January. In October and November, the chapter held In-depth Projects for the mothers. The In-depth Projects were cen- tered around holiday crafts. The fathers were involved through a Father-Daughter Basket Social in May. All ac- tivities that the officers and the adviser planned, worked out for the best, and helped the chapter reach its long term goal. 2 FHA First Row: T. Bruns. B. Swanson Second Row: K. Klatt, O. Accompanists: Bart Bakker. Bonnie Swanson. Dorri Bruns. Some of the members of the Senior Class practice the song We May Never Pass This Way Again for graduation. Musical Stars For many musicians of Renville High School a high- light of the year was their participation in the District Music Contest. It all began several months before the Contest as the groups were chosen, and they started practice. A lot of time and effort was put into each selection. A practice was obtained be- fore audiences in local churches, women's groups and at the nursing home and each group also ap- peared at the Spring Choir Concert. It all came to a climax with the District Contests at Maynard and Raymond. Each group, soloist, or duet had one chance to give the best performance be- fore the judge. Julie Freiborg and Jody Agre starred with a duet and Roberta Johnson with a Soprano Solo at the Region-State Contest held at Redwood Falls on May 3, 1980. Vocal Start Flrtt Row: C. Rand, Madrigal. With a smaller cast of only 9 characters the students were challenged to present the Haggetts as they faced the Depression in the 1930's. The Hag- getts wanted to keep up their image and although they would deny they were doing anything unethical to gain financially, they became greedy when the opportunity presented itself. At the same time greed is the human weakness which they most vehemently denounced. “The Late Christopher Bean gave the audience an opportunity to laugh as they were presented with human weaknesses. Without the help of the many crews assisting the casts and directors the play would not have been as successful. The play dates were chosen early in the fall but had to be changed when the volleyball team won a trip to the state tournament. Tol- lant. an impersonator and forger, tries to persuade Dr Haggett to sell his paintings done by Christopher Bean 6. Dr Haggett and Rosen exchange bids over Christopher Bean's portrait of Abby while Mr. Dav- enport tries to convince them the portrait should be in a museum. 7. Student Director Kristie Klatt stands by to prompt those who forget their lines.
