The Coronation proceeded with skits from every class and many cheers from the cheer- leaders. Despite Renville's determined effort, they fell short in bringing home a victory. In the final quarter the Bird Island gridders took over and won by the score of 26 to 13. Following the game Tytus Canby” performed at the Homecoming Dance, giving the week a successful end. 1. Gigstad (Aunt Alberta) After many weeks of hard practice, the play Afraid of the Dark was ready to be presented. Under the direction of Mr. Kutter, the play was performed for the elementary classes as an afternoon matinee, then for the geneial audience in two evening performances. This mystery farce in three acts took place in the living room at Stone Mansion,” an isolated country estate. A young couple arrived one June night at “Stone Mansion to spend their two-week honeymoon, Chaun- cey (the husband) confessed to Lillums (his wife) that ever since childhood he had been afraid of the dark and had never been able to overcome his childish pho- bia. No sooner had he unburdened himself, when the lights went out and there they were, in the dark! When the lights came on again the astounded couple found themselves surrounded by fantastic characters in the supposedly deserted house and they were plunged into the midst of a spy plot — but a spy plot with a different twist! 8 1. With Renville’s Centennial in mind, Editors Terri Kem- nitz, Pam Dahlke, and Shirley Seward came up with this book of old and new memories. They didn’t actually do it themselves. They were assisted by hard working stu- dents, known as their staff. Also, aiding them were two efficient advisors, Judy Miller and Linda Anderson. 10 The annual staff gathers with their advisors for a pep talk to prepare for their next deadline Wir Fahren Nach Deutschland! This year 10 members of the German Class traveled to Germany for 16 days. Some of the highlights of their trip were staying in the exciting city of Berlin, traveling into the Commu- nist city of East Berlin, and of course, sleeping on the famous feather beds. They also spent 6 days of their trip living with a true German family. They all found Germany to be a great country and wish everyone could have the opportunity to go there. 1. Hami came from Mie Prefecture, Japan, where she lives with her parents and one brother. She arrived here in July, 1977, and returned home in June, 1978. Hami participated in madrigals, the annual staff, and was elected honorary member of the National Honor Society. Hami found school here to be “too small, but comfortable.” She also felt the students and faculty were friendlier in comparison to her home school. Too much slang in the English language was her opinion. She studied German during the school year. Her hobbies included reading, sewing, crocheting, and cooking. 1. Shirley Seward, President, led the organization through the year. Among the activities were drawing up a new constitution, attending the annual Nobel Peace Conference and having a first annual banquet. Besides having a new advisor, the society also acquired eleven new members. They were Seniors: Bev Abbas, Jim Hoffman, and Ned Wohlman; Juniors: Renee Allen, Paul Holm, Carol Santjer, and Tom Schemel: and Sophomores: Deb Freiborg and Ellen Wahl. Humiko Tsuji, the foreign exchange student, was named an Honorary Member. 1. New inductees take oath into the Society. 2. Letterwinners The Lettermen's Club had various projects during the 1977-78 school year. They hosted the concession stand for the conference wres- tling tournament, worked at the concession stand at all home Girls’ Basketball games, tended to the care and rental of athletic blazers, and put on the annual Shopping Spree. Money raised from this year’s projects went towards the purchase of an outdoor score clock. Officers were M. Degree, Presi- dent; K. Mulder, Vice-President; and C. He- brink, Secretary-Treasurer. Rick Toso was the advisor. 1977-78 was a year of organizing for the newly-formed Letterwomen’s Club. The club, under the direction of Carolyn Westphal, was strictly an organization of girls who lettered in varsity sports, and not a money-making orga- nization. Parents' Night for Volleyball and Girls' Basketball was sponsored by the club. Officers were M. Jacobs, President; D. Frei- borg, Vice-President; and J. Muetzel, Secre- tary-Treasurer. Sandy Abbas wins Raggedy Ann and Andy raffle held by F.H.A. This year was a year of rebuilding for the Senior High F.H.A. Chapter. Leading the chapter through the year was President Terri Kemnitz. Their first activity was a picnic held at the park. They also gave a workshop at the Dis- trict Meeting on Encounter.” To make money, a group of members made Rag- gedy Ann and Andy dolls and held a drawing in which Sandy Abbas was the winner. They sold Helpful Hints books, the money going to Camp Courage. The chapter also selected members to at- tend the state convention at which Jackie Muetzei ran for a State office. Indians Have Rough Season The season’s record of 3 and 6 didn't show the true performance of Renville’s team, for four of the losses were by no more than one toucbdown. The gridders were led by Senior and Cap- tain Mike DeGree. Mike was named to the WCCO Team of the Week along with being named Renville's most valuable defensive player. He set a new season record of 184 tackles. Sophomore Dale Negen also received rec- ognition as he was named the most valuable offensive player, rushing for 408 yards, and 4 touchdowns. The guys were put through many tiring workouts but with the help of music the practices were made endurable. The site of the conference wrestling tournament was Renville. Clay Bryan was injured in the first round of the conference tourney so he was eliminated from further tournaments. Because Renville had a young team this year, next year they will be more experienced. B SQUXD WRESTLING First Row: T. Decknatel. S. Bakker, I. Loskota. M. Hannah. K Emde Second Row: G. O'Connor, 0. There was team effort that aided them in becoming a better team. There were only three Junior High boys out for track. They did a good job in keeping up with the older guys. The seniors who participated in track were Kelly Sturlaug- son, Terry Sturlaugson, Kim Mulder, Jeff Ville, and Greg King. Two of the seniors were in- jured early, thus leaving a young team. In spite of the injuries and cancellations due to ram, they had an impressive season. The boys placed 3rd in the Conference Track Meet. 1. C. In spite of this factor, the girls displayed great speed and determination. Losing only one senior (Deenie Swart), the girls are looking forward to eventful future years. This year the track team loses the service of Deenie Swart. Through the years, she has captured the school records in the shot and dis- cus along with many meet records. Since she was in 9th grade she has partici- pated in the State Track Meet where she acquired two 4th places. Girls’ Track i 1. A discus becomes heavier as the day goes on for M Standfuss. 2. The ability of each player to play various positions was a plus for the team. In the fall the traditional Halloween party was held with colorful costumes and parades. At Christmas, Mr. Jon Ek, Music Director, led the students in an afternoon Christmas Program which the public attended. During March grades 3-6 participated in a M S. Read-A-Thon. These students spent a morning in Olivia listening to Carl Eller who is a leader of the program. The 30 fifth and sixth graders involved in School Patrol were treated to the Shrine Circus and a Twins’ baseball game.
