During the summer months, the band mem- bers and their director, Mr. James Merkel, took time out from their vacations to play in various parades around the area. Among those attended were the Kaffe Fest, Corn Capital Days, and Renville’s own Sugar Beet Days. The Indian band added a new w rinkle to their performance in ’77. It came in the form of new uniforms. The members, all dressed up in new apparel for the school year, held concerts in the fall, winter, and spring, as well as providing the rousing music for the majority of the athletic events during the year. 1. At times the band showed as much excitement at the games as those on the floor 2. Director, Mr Merekl, makes a trial run in uniform. 3. Leading the band were seven Flag Girls “waving their way” through Football games and parades. Behind the flag girls marched three majorettes: Nancy Daugherty, Corry Perry, and head major- ette, Linda Biederman. Under the direction of Mrs. McKim, the soloists starred at the music contest. The 85 member band, under the guidance and direction of James Merkel, did a respectable job by performing in all of the scheduled concerts during the year. When at athletic events the Senior High Band was given a night off, the Junior High Band was held responsible for providing the rousing pep music. The Junior High Choir, under the direction of Jon Ek, finished out another great year in 77. The young and talented singers held concerts in the fall, winter and spring that provided fascinating listening for Renville High School as well as the entire community. 1. Barton and David show their fine musical ability at a concert. 2. Part of the winter concert was performed by the Junior High Band 3. The choir attentively waits for their cue. 4. Robert Kutter was in charge of the dramatics for the play, and Rave McKim was director of the musical segments. These two were the major reason for the play being such an enormous success. The actors and ac- tresses knew their parts well and portrayed them excel- lently. Some of the major characters included Dan Berger as Lil’ Abner, Deb Feldman as Daisy Mae, Dave Bauer as Earthquake MaGoon, Linda Biederman as Mammy Yokum, Jon Zaske as Marryin’ Sam, and Jim Hoffman as General Bullmoose. 1. This year, thirteen out of the German II class excitedly made the trip. Touring old castles, hiking in the Black Forest, experiencing Dachau, and living six days with a Ger- man family were some of the highlights of staying in Germany. The German Club ran the concession stands during the Volleyball games. They put the money towards 4 5 their stomachs, as they used it when they ate at the Ratskeller in Munich, Germany, and dining at the Kaiserhoff in New Ulm, Minnesota. Another main attraction for this class was the “Schuhplattler Tanz” they performed at the Fine Arts Festival this year. 6 I. The Ulm Munster and Donau River were part of the scenery of the family stay. 2. Everyone took a picture break while hiking in the Black Forest of Germany. 3. Jerry, his American brother, was a big help in finding Even new friends. New faces, places, and new experiences were intro- duced to him. Even adjusted quite well: he was active in football, being the head kicker. In the spring he was in track, which turned out to be a big help to the whole team. He has been enjoyed by everyone, and all of us at Renville High will treasure all the memories of knowing and being with him. Good Luck in the future, Even! 1. The school helps Even celebrate his birthday. 2. Even and his friends are active fans at all volleyball games 3. Look out below! 4. Hey, look what I caught, the Easter Bunny.” National Honor Society 1 I NHS is the goal for most honor roll students of RHS. To reach this goal, however, one must have an above scholastic grade average throughout his high school years. Other requirements to be an NHS student is to have qualities of lead- ership and character. This goal be- came a reality for nine new mem- bers this year. The other NHS achievers are: Deenie Swart, Shir- ley Seward, Diane Smith, Cheryl Bratsch, Bill Olson, Phill Snart- land, and Mike Mulder. 1. The new members of NHS: J Bulthuis, T Raske, J. Of the 10 under Mr. Kutter’s direction, two won the District and went on to the Region. These two were: Jim Hoffman in extemporane- ous speaking, and Linda Biederman in extemporaneous reading. Mrs. Mill- er coached the other 9 students. Out of these, Corry Perry became an alternate for the Region. Mr. Kutter and Mrs. Miller put in long hours helping these students prepare for the Declam contests that the students participated in. The library cadets had no time to spare as they checked books in and out for elementary as well as high school students. Some of the other duties the library cadets performed were putting books back on the shelves, decorat- ing the bulletin boards, and helping with inventory. In the fall the club competed against Danube and FFA alumni in basketball. FFA participated in many contests and had some lucky teams who made it to state. “FFA Week” was a special week for all club members. Sheep were brought in one of the days for the students to look at. Another day there was a contest of guessing how much money was in a jar; Tim Haen came the closest and won the money. Later in the week the FFA took the businessmen of Renville out for breakfast. A demonstration by the Parlimentary team was presented to the student body on the Friday of FFA Week.” The officers of FFA for the 1976-77 school year are as follows: President: Diane Smith Vice-President: Dan Berger Secretary: Roxane Hinderks Treasurer: Ned Wohlman Reporter: Jane Gigstad Sentenial: Jim Hoffman 1. In the meantime though, the junior and senior high FHA clubs had many noon hour sales to keep us students happy. For your Valentine in February, the senior high club put on a pancake sale. The junior high had pickles and many Friday doughnut sales for us. The FHA- FFA Banquet was another big project for the FHAers. Cheryl Bratsch was the senior high President, followed by Vice-president, Deenie Swart; Secretary, Jenelle Zaske; and Treasurer, Bev Abbas. The junior high officers start with Ellen Wahl as Presi- dent, Vice-president, Shannon Gluth; Secretary, Mary O’Connor; and Treasurer, Tammy Bruns. 1. The 76-77 squad compiled an out- standing 15-6 win-loss record over the sea- son. The girls gained some memorable wins over such teams as Bird Island, Danube, Sacred Heart, and Willmar, but they suf- fered a heartbreaking loss to the Benson Braves, the defending District 12 champi- ons in volleyball. Cheryl Bratsch was the captain of the squad that was composed of 7 Seniors, 3 Juniors, and 1 Sophomore. In his second year as head coach. Chuck Huff led his girls to that 15-6 mark. Winning became a considerably harder task for the Indians basketball team in ’76, but the boys from Renville still managed to stay on top with a 12-9 record for their season. The Indians began the season with three consecu- tive losses to Prinsburg, Clara City, and Bird Island but got on the right track mid-way through the season, capturing 6 games in a row before bowing out to Redwood Falls, the eventual Region 3 repre- sentatives in the state tournament. The squad was composed of 6 Juniors, 3 Soph- mores, and 1 Freshman. The captains were Kim Mulder and Terry Sturlaugson. The 212 All-Confer- ence picks for Renville were Kim Mulder and Terry Sturlaugson. The WCCO Team-of-the-Week candi- dates were also Kim Mulder and Terry Sturlaugson, and Kim Mulder captured the MVP honors for the year. There were long, hard hours spent by this squad to make it a success. They made signs for tournaments and lead cheers at pepfests. “B” SQUAD GIRLS BASKETBALL CHEERLEADERS: T Bruns. M Gigstad, J. The girls had big wins in games with Kerkhoven (60-14), Hector (69-43), and Prinsburg (63-22) but dropped big games to Redwood Falls, Brownton, and Sacred Heart. A contest with Granite Falls put Wendy Hagen into the Minnesota sports history books. In this game Wendy became the first girl in the state to score 1,000 points. Wendy later went on to become one of Renville’s 212 All-Conference picks, along with Mary Standfuss. Wendy was also given the MVP honors by her teammates.
