THANK YOU PARENTS FOR EVERYTHING GIVEN AND DONE FOR US. 2 Last fall the Senior Class of RHS presented the play “Annie Get Your Gun” by Herbert and Dorothy Fields. Mrs. Linda Anderson directed this overwhelmingly successful play. The play told of the trials and tribulations suffered by Annie Oakley, Frank Butler, Charlie Davenport and Dolly Tate. In the opening scene, a shootin’ match takes place between Annie and Frank Annie wins the match but not Frank’s love for her. Throughout the play, there are several love matches, a near scalping, a boat ride, and a lawn party. The play ends with Annie losing a re- scheduled shootin’ match against Frank Butler. Although Annie loses the last shootin’ match, she wins the love of Frank. Senior Class Presents Annie Get Your Gun PLAY CAST: (left to right) P. Schemel, J. Aalderks, D. Jacobs, C. Lenz, T. Petra Hauenschild came to Renville on August 19. She lived with the Frank Wahl family. Cathie and Ellen have been good sisters to Petra. They got along like regular sisters. At first, she thought our small town would be hard to live in because of its size, but when she got to know everyone in school and around town she liked it a lot. Petra was known to everyone as Petie. Her outgoing personality charmed her many friends. Petie was enjoyed by the seniors in her class and they tried to show her a good time. During the year Petie participated in girls’ basketball, the senior class play, one act play, band, chorus, girls’ glee, FTA, FHA, student council, and was secretary of the German Club. She attended the First Lutheran Church and was a member of the Renville Aces 4-H Club. National Honor Society Inducts New Members Character, Leadership, Scholarship, and Service are the goals of the National Honor Society. Each inducted member strives to maintain these qualities. The National Honor Society participated in two ac- tivities during this past year. The induction ceremonies of the National Honor Society was held on March 11,1974. There were six new members inducted. Sophomores-Kyle Prodoehl and Carol Siet- sema; Juniors-Tim Berger and Dave Henneberry; Seniors-Carol Lenz and Darlene Abbas. Supervising the homecoming festivities was the highlighted project of the Senior High Student Council Preparations were made for the coronation, Queen’s Tea, and Parade along with all the details of ordering flowers, cleaning the robe, and decorating the gym in the traditional red and white colors for the dance. Problems arose in connection with the student lounge, now in it’s second year. The council began viewing it’s delapitated furniture, broken jukebox, and unreliable candy machine with dread. With the help of the treasury and a lot of work, the members somewhat improved these conditions. YFU committments were made, and the council sold tickets and promoted the last PTA Parent Appreciation Banquet. The final service done was sponsoring the school picnic, held at Sibley. President Tom Eekhoff presided over the monthly meetings. Rosemary Sietsema kept minutes; Dave Henneberry served as Treasurer; and Cathy Schmidt assumed the duties of Vice President. Principal Fust super- vised this council of four girls and eleven boys. SR. HIGH STUDENT COUNCIL-First Row: (left to right) D. Hen- neberry, P. Hauenschild, R. Sietsema, C. Schmidt, C. Agre, K. The junior high students active in chorus and band have been busy showing the community their talent. The junior high band, under the direction of Mr. James Merkel, marched in the Homecoming Parade. Linda Biederman, Sue Eckstrom, and Roxanne Hinderks. the majorettes, led the band through a marching routine at the Renville- Brownton football game. The band also played at the Renville- Brownton basketball game. Their concert performance was at the Winter Band Concert. Mr. Craig Carnahan directed the Junior high chorus. The chorus performed at the Christmas Concert and at the Fine Arts Festival. Both the band and the chorus saw turnover as many of their members advanced to the Senior High organizations, but new blood from the sixth grade should fill the gap. As the royal court took their places on the stage, Homecoming ‘73 had begun. Cheers, led by enthusiastic cheerleaders, filled the gymnasium. Every class presented an original skit, intersperced with some rousing peptalks. After the Queen’s Tea, there was a pep rally in the old gym. In a state of jubilation, the first night ended. Friday began with the Homecoming Parade down Main Street and past the Ren-Villa Manor, with our American Flag leading the way. Following closely behind came the Renville High School Marching Band, floats. Royal Court, football players, and the elementary kids in costume Following the game, “Wooden Road” played in the old gym for the high school students and alumni. Establishing an early championship form and retaining it through the conference schedule, the Renville High School varsity gridders ended a productive 1973 football season with a slate of eight wins and a single defeat. Not quite able to completely fulfill pre-season ex- pectations, the Indians nevertheless built a strong team desire and winning spirit. Kindled by head coach Rick Toso and assistant coach Dave Sorenson, the Indian fire led the team through the daily strain of eleven weeks of practices and the rigors of nine weekly battles. The team’s effort was led by 12 seniors with 21 underclassmen contributing their skills as well. With visions of a conference championship and possible state playoff qualification, the Indians rolled over their first six opponents. The victory train was suddenly derailed, however, by a strong Bird Island effort. Plagued by injuries and unfavorable conditions, the Indian offense sputtered, and the defense could not contain the size and speed of the Panthers. Swallowing the setback, the Indians bounced back to capture the two final victories and a second place finish in the 212 Conference. The season was culminated by the naming of Don Dolan, Ken Haug, Greg Mulder and Curt Raske as all-conference selections. The ‘74’ season marked the end of the high school grid careers of 12 members of the team. The seniors who will no longer wear the football number for RHS are Don Wolter, Tim Smith, Terry Roschild, Mike Rosaasen, Curt Raske, Greg Mulder, Tom Eekhoff, Don Dolan, Gary Carnes, David Bruns, Mike Abbas, and Larry Abbas. It was through their contributions and efforts that the 1973 season was a success. 33 Indians' Hopes Shattered in Region Play The Renville Indian cagers started their “73-74” season with very high hopes of establishing a championship team. Throughout the season their ambitions of becoming a champion grew with every game. The regular season ended with a record of 18-0. Upon completing the regular season, the Indians moved swiftly into district play and as before were very suc- cessful. They breezed by their first two opponents, and then defeated Olivia for the championship 62-55. During the first round of Region III action the Indians hopes of becoming a championship team were suddenly shattered in a hard fought game against Clara City which ended in a score of 66-65. Throughout the year, four players were named to the WCCO Team of the Week. The players named to this team were Kevin Mulder, Roger Mulder, Don Dolan, and Greg Mulder, who was also named to the WCCO All State Team. These four players were also selected to the All Con- ference Team. BOTTON RIGHT: Greg Mulder runs into determined interference before scoring. After capturing the conference championship, the Indians moved into district competition and placed second behind Norwood by one point. Several individuals then advanced to region competition. Placing high in the region were Tim Berger, Bruce Feldman, and Greg Mulder. These three then competed in the state meet with Tim Berger placing fourth in the Shot Put and Greg placing second in the discus. 38 Batsmen Plagued by Bad Weather Due to poor weather conditions, the Renville Indians baseball team got off to a slow start this season, but as the weather improved so did the diamond nine. By mid-season the Indians had become a powerful team in the conference. The team finished conference play tied for second. In the first round of district action the Indians bombed Hector 10-0 and then were knocked out of district play by Lester Prairie. The Indians finished the season with a seven and five record. This years defensive squad was lead by a pit- ching trio made up of Roger Mulder, Don Dolan, and Greg Mulder. Offensively the top hitters were Don Dolan with .389, Greg Mulder with .361, and Brad Peterson with .344. Don Dolan was selected as the teams MVP. It may sound like the class of ‘75 is one of the least liked classes at RHS. Actually, this year’s Junior class is the greatest—in size, that is. They also think they’re the greatest in talent, personality, and charisma. Look what they have: cheerleaders, basketball stars, wrestlers, editors for both annual and Ren-Hi Record, active members in band, chorus, German Club, declam, FHA, FT A, FFA, and almost everything that goes on. What a way to start a year! With classmates in varsity sports, sophomores begin to think that maybe they are really growing up. At homecoming they were represented by an attendant and ar. escort. People say, “Freedom comes with age.” Being one year older they have a better opportunity to express their opinions. They also receive more privileges such as more choice of school courses and ex- tracurricular activities. With these privileges comes the pleasures of getting to know more of your schoolmates, thinking youth will never end, and goofing around in class when they know they shouldn’t. Yes, another year older, but wiser? 65 Jim Sconberg Carol Sietsema Mary Sperl Gail Swart Pat Toupal Rick Zaske Randy Zieske Not Pictured: Bill Gilland Freshmen Prepare For Senior High This year was an exciting year for the class of ’77.’ The Freshman began their year with the first major activity, getting ready for Homecoming. The theme of their float was “Give Sacred Heart Burn.” The class also presented a skit. The class of ‘77’ also studied hard this year to ready itself for the homecoming of it’s sophomore year, and first year of Senior High. The freshmen chose Jerry Buthuis, Mike Mulder, Lynn Mulder, and Todd Beck to serve as their class president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer respec- tively.
