In state tournament play they were first pitted against a powerful Hibbing team. The game proved to be an ex- citing one as the Indians defeated the Bluejackets by 3 points after having once led by 12 in the third quarter. In the semi-final game the Renville team met a strong pressing Bemidji five. This developed into a hard fought ball game, and when the gun sounded, the game was dead- locked at 44 all. An overtime period was then played in which the Indians got the tip. They then played control ball, working for a last second shot which never materialized. Renville lost the ball and Bemidji missed on a last second desperation shot. Whiting of Bemidji made a long field goal from the side in the ensuing sudden death overtime to win the ball game. A taller Austin team defeated the Renville five in a Saturday battle for third place. In their march to the state tournament, the Indians de- feated Sacred Heart, Hutch, Buffalo Lake, Hanley Falls, and Dawson to retain their District 12 crown and win the Region 3 honors. During pre-tournament play the Indians finished with 19 wins and one loss, the one loss coming at the hands of a hot shooting Bird Island five. The final record of the games played for the Indians was 25 wins and 3 defeats. 4 (£6ee'Ue etvt4. Janet Schroeder, Lois Nelson, Wilma Schneider, Mary Whipple, Karen Binger, Barbara Wolf.
