JUNIORS TAKE PART IN MANY EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Highlights, of the year for the Junior Class were their class play, Beauty and the Beef, given in No- vember. an unusual All-Hi Christmas Party featuring a floor show, and the Spring Banquet and Prom. BAND SETS NEW UNIFORMS AS GOAL FOR 52 The band of thirty-nine members, under the direction of Mr. Rayfield Haas, has been working with their parents and the school board to pur- chase new uniforms, which they hope will arrive before the end of the school term To publicize this project the band gave a concert in the fall and again in the spring. They also appeared at football and basketball games, at the class plays, and at the District Music Festival. Many members of the band have formed different instrumental groups includ- ing the German Band pic- tured at the left. NEW MALE CHORUS HAS 39 MEMBERS Mr. Haas, the music instructor, directed a large group of high school boys in the organization of a male cho- rus. The purpose of the group is to learn appreciation of music and to study its fundamentals. The boys sang together for a few months to gain ex- perience, then they and the members of the Girls Glee Club formed a Mixed Chrous. The drum majorettes, three sophomores, are Fran- ces Toupal, Yvonne DeGreeand Dolores Johnson. The girls led the band in the Homecoming parade and performed during the half at several of the basketball games. 18 We're from RENVILLE; We couldn't be prouder. If you can't hear us now, We'll yell a little louder Renville!! SPORT EVENTS BRING THRILLS TO FANS With Ernest Carlson as captain, the Indians played their first year of eight-man football with all home games being played on Renville's newly lighted field. In the seven game season, Renville ended with a two to five record. In basketball, the squad won six of their fifteen A TEAM CHEERLEADERS Janet Schroeder, Lois Nelson, Wilma Schneider, Bev erley Barber. games, but several of the losses were by very small mar- gins. The tournament team for which no seniors were selected, played Olivia in a close and hard fought game with a final score of 51-55. Renville is very proud of the thirteen to two re- cord made by the B team during the season. FOUR PLAYS IN ONE ACT-PLAY CONTEST The one-act plays were staged the afternoon of February 27. Mind Set won in die local contest and represented Renville at Buffalo Lake. March 18. Mind Set is a fantasy which portrays the con- fusion in a young girl's mind as she tries to choose from her suitors an ideal husband. The cast included Carol Huselid, Donna Schneider, LeonBinger,Bill Lorette, and Lavonne Benedict. One cast presented Booth Tarkington's well-known Trysting Place. They were Muriel Schroeder, Russell Johnson, Barbara Haroldson, Dolores Johnson, Chris Hem- ingsen, Sidney Bengtson, and Donald McClurg. The scene of I'm a Fool was at the races about 1900. Cast in this play were Gerry O'Connor, Dorothy Haen, Betty Berends, Wesley Shubert, Billy Dirnberger, Robert Westby, Marilyn Nelson, and Marian Tschudy. Rehearsal showed the complications of a play practice. In its cast were Erma Schneider. Elizabeth Haen, Yvonne DeGree, Frances Toupal, Vera Smith, and Judy Fawcett. In all the plays the students did their own make- up and costuming and they were responsible for their own scenery. COUNCIL LEADS STUDENTS IN PROJECTS-ACTIVITIES The Student Council is composedof twelve mem- bers. three being from each of the senior high school grades and one from each of the junior high school grades. The president is elected from one of the three senior representatives while the remainder of the officers are chosen from any of the senior high council members. This year the officers were: Russell Johnson, president; Bill Lorette, vice-president; Marilyn Nelson, secretary; Roger Wassenaar, treasurer; and Mrs. Rogge, advisor. The Council is the student governing body of the school. It promotes close harmony among students and faculty and works for improvement in the school pro- gram and cooperation with this program. The Student Council supervised and sponsored many of the activities of the year. One of these was Homecoming with the snake dance, parade, and festivi- ties planned and carried out by the Council. They also arranged a social calendar which included seven all-hi parties. A system of study hall monitorship was incorpor- ated this year. Different students were assigned each week to assist the teachers in charge of the study hall. The student government day, held in the spring, was the highlight of the year. On this day two previous- ly elec ted seniors took the position of superintendent and principal, and senior high school students taught all of the high school classes. Money to carry out these projects was obtained from the magazine sale which was held in the fall.
