Football, cross-country, soccer, volley- ball, and swimming all were getting start- ed on their seasons too. The year also started early for the Freshmen at orientation. They were giv- en tours, told about various clubs, sports, and activities in which they could be in- volved and shown what a pep assembly is like. They were ready for school to start, as was everyone else on the 7th of Sep- tember, however, it wasn,t meant to be. Because of the teachers' strike, school was delayed a week and started on the 14th instead. N-ot including all sporting events, the first major happening of the Autumn was the Autumn Tolo on Friday the 23rd of September. The theme was Let's Go Hulau. Homecoming week, with the theme Once Upon a Time . . , went from the 24th of Octo- ber and culminated on the 29th with White Lightning playing at the Homecom- ing Dance. Monday was pajama and stuffed animal day with the legs contest at lunch. That night before open house was the Coronation assembly, where Carla Ed- monds was crowned queen and Susan Stewart, Sue Lyons, April Brusha and Cindi Fritsvold were crowned the 1983 Homecoming Princesses. Semifinalists in- cluded Heidi Brumbaugh, Janis Glantz, Rose Kato, Pam Larson, Sonja Mej- laender, Debbie Staudt, and Salia Sui- tonu. Tuesday was crazy tie and sock day, Wednesday was twin and clash day with bed races at lunch, and the Powder Puff football game that night, Thursday was concert t-shirt and button day and Friday was red and white day. The Homecoming game against K-M in 4 wg 2? 2 ,,'i 'WW ...tm . .,, r 4 was a disappointing defeat but our Indi- ans worked real hard and provided many moments of excitement. The halftime show included the winning Senior Float, a Cinderella-like coach with Prince Charm- ing and Cinderella riding inside and the coachman driving the pony pulling it. The excellent underclass floats were also in- cluded along with the Homecoming Court arriving in Corvettes. Each classes' hall was decorated with the Seniors again winning, using a pink and white Cinderella dance theme. The door decorating contest was won by the Office Procedures class who used a fairy- tale castle theme. On Halloween people dressed up and the Seniors put on a Halloween carnival that evening that many people attended and truly enjoyed. In November, the sports seasons were coming to a close with NPSL and State playoffs. The Football team won their division and made the state playoffs where, unfor- tunately, they lost in the first round. The Cross-Country teams both had excellent seasons with the guys winning the league championship for the third year in a row, placing 4th at West Central District, and 12th in State, the girl's team placed lst in the NPSL, meet, second at WCD, and 10th at state. The Volleyball team placed 4th in NPSL, 2nd in WCD and came in a great 7th place at State. The girl's swim team placed 7th in NPSL and individuals went to state. The girl's soccer team just missed the play-offs with a 4th place fin- ish in the NPSL. Also in November was one of the best dances RHS has had in quite a while. On November 18th Jaugernaut came and played for an awesome All-City dance. Also in November was the first major vacation-a four day weekend for Thanks- giving and it sure was a welcome break! All in all, Autumn 1983 was a very busy, exciting time for Renton High School. We had a great group this year which really pulled together to make such events as the blood and paper drives a total success. These and the other fundraising events that we held to raise money for charities were our way of saying 'fThanks to the community and its support of our school. With the help of my fellow officers, Vice-president Ben Shimizu, and Secretary Grace Tazuma, we managed to keep our members busy. Although our membership didn't show up in great numbers, we managed to carry out periodic activities. Among these were our Welcome Back to School get-together in which we stressed Freshman involvement, volunteer work in the Japanese community at the Nikkei Health Fair and an outing with the Rainier Beach ASA. Close to school, we actively sold spirit ribbons to support our football team, and buttons during basketball season. We also took part in the annual Heritage Week festivities at which we took part in the assembly and sold our oriental delicacies at the Food Fair, It has been fun working with the people involved in making this club a success and I would especially like to thank Mrs. Tanaka, our advisor, for her patience and guidance. Having the honor of being the only team to win the state cham- pionship 3 consecutive times last year, put great pressure on the tribe this year. Al- though not capturing the title for the 4th time in a row, the team kept up the winning tradition, including winning the Lakeside Tournament for the 3rd year in a row. After fighting for 4th place in league ldetermined by a league playoff against Kentridgel, the women went on to West Central and cap- tured 3rd place. Coach Savage This year's boys varsity again had a very successful season under the mastery of Coach Savage. It all started on Sept. 17 when the Indians placed 3rd out of 36 teams at the Edmonds Relays. Then they ran their inaugural race at their new home course, Gene Coulon Park, where they effortlessly defeated both Hazen and Auburn. The next meet offered no prob- lem either as the wild bunch discharged the Chargers and declawed the Wolver- ines. Renton defeated their toughest foe Kennedy and quickly disposed KM Sz Lindbergh in the same meet. They con- cluded their dual meet season and went undefeated in the NPSL for the 3rd year in a row. After a weekfs rest, the team retained its NPSL crown as it won the league meet on strong performances by all the runners. Next, was the WCD meet in which the team was hurt by the injury to Terry but due to the 1st place finish by Matt, and the extra effort put forth by Paul Joe, John, Yi, and Lawrence, the team still finished 4th to qualify for state for the 8th consecutive year. At the state meet in Spokane, Paul's 19th and Matt's 3rd place finish led the Indians to a re- spectable 12th place finish to conclude another outstanding year. The Winter Sports season was underway with the Boy's and Girl's Basket- ball teams, Wrestling team, Gymnastics and Boy's Swim team all looking towards pro- ductive seasons. The BSU Winter Dance was a big success this year! Some people went in couples, others went single. Pictures were available and everybody had a fantastic time! Of course, when anyone thinks of De- cember, they think of Winter Vacation and the teriffic Holiday Assembly that precedes it. The Assembly was enjoyable with class skits and the choir singing Holiday tunes. Naturally, everyone enjoyed their vacation. January was a busy month also. Everyone came back refreshed on January 2, although some people did stay home to watch the Bowl games. Once everyone was back into the school game, Winter Tolo came along to brighten the day. The theme was '4Snow- Ball , and everyone who attended had a fantastic time dancing to the music played by the D.J. As far as music goes, the 2nd Annual Battle of the Airbands was held on the 26th. The winners were the Vapors do- ing Turning Japanese , in first, Def Lep- pard doing l'I.et it Go , in second, and Bos- ton doing UForeplayfLongtime , in third Events These three all went on to play in Thomas Jefferson's Battle of the Airbands in Febru- ary, where the Vapors came in third. Which leads us to February and the start of a new semester. Also in February was the annual Foreign Exchange Spaghetti Dinner to help promote the Renton School District levy the next day. Not only was the dinner a success but the levy passed too. Valentine's Day was the next major event with Valen- tine's Day grams available. Sunglasses also went on sale in February with lots of differ- ent kinds and colors. The Mother-Son Ban- quet was held on the 15th, The food was provided by an Emil Villa's barbeque, and even those who didn't go to the banquet got to enjoy the aroma of the barbequing beef as it cooked during the day. All the guys who did take their mothers had a fantastic time taking part in the carnival-like games. Febru- ary also marked the end of the Winter Sport's seasons. The Boy's Basketball team finished 10-8 in NPSL, the Girl's Basketball team finished 8-10, the Wrestling team came in 2-10 and individuals went onto regionals, the Gymnastics team finished up 5-16 and had individuals go onto regionals, and the Boy's swim team ended up 4-5 and also had individuals go onto regionals and State. Under six-year head coach Jim Hall, the Indian women played well in many tough games. Having only two seniors, a great deal of responsibility was placed on the underclassmen, in- cluding freshman Nancy Darrow, who ripped down boards as one of the starting forwards. In the other starting forward position was senior, co-captain Carla Edmonds. Rounding out the front court was junior center Tammy Darrow. In the back court, junior Teresa Kosai and senior, co-captain Chris Elliott start- ed. The first five were supported by a great deal of depth. First off were sophomore forward Jodi Stew- art, junior guard Candy Faulks, and sophomore guard Stacy Ringos. Sophomore forward Heather Magstadt, junior forward Susie Dahlby, and sopho- more forward Pam Breda completed the talent-filled roster. The team consisted of nine upcoming juniors and was led under the leadership of returning senior lettermen, Joe Dinius and Tony Breland. The Indians shot out to a quick start in winning their first four league games and upsetting the first-place Tro- jans of Auburn by last second free-throws by Joe Dinius. Throughout the season, outstanding performances were made by Jon Skip Paepke with his fourth quar- ter scoring sprees and the insurmount- able pure shooting of Joe Dinius who led the Indians in scoring and was in the top three of the league. Tony Breland and Jon Paepke were also among the league leaders in scoring. The school got a major face lift for the season with a million dollar painting job including Hracing stripes along some halls. The first of March saw the beginning of the Spring Sports Season. Mens and Womens Track both got off to great starts, looking towards possible NPSL Championships. The Menls Soccer Team also was heading towards another League Championship. The Mens and Womens Tennis teams were looking good along with Baseball and the ever-im- proving Softball team. In other areas of competition, the Math team came in 3rd in a tough competition with many area schools 1 and the Knowledge Bowl Team placed 15th in their regional competition. March also saw the Daddy Daughter Dinner Dance, held this year at the Auburn Elks Club, Another annual fun-filled event, Heritage Week, was again held this Spring and was a great success. The week was filled with as- semblies discussing and honoring different races and cultures and then, of course, the Annual Food Fair was held, The Food Fair featured good items from American to French, Grecian to African, and Asian to South American and just about everything else in between. The biggest assembly 4 ai. ? the week featured a fashion show showing the many different native styles from Africa and Asia to Holland and the Phillipines. Also many native dances and other musical productions were shown. All in all, Heritage Week ended up with everyone learning something new about foreign cultures and how they influence our lives today. April began on a wonderful note, Spring Vacation, and continued with more Spring Activities. The new Constitution and By- Laws finally completed the ratification pro- cess to go into effect for the '84-'85 school year. The '84-'85 Varsity and Junior-Var- sity Cheerleader tryouts were held and the l eight new cheerleaders for each squad were chosen. Tribe and the Junior Class com- bined efforts and dances fSpring Prom and Spring Tolol to put on the RHS Spring Dance. The theme was Footloose, the dress casual and the music provided by a D.J. Ev- eryone who attended had a fantastic time. May finally brought Spring with plenty of flowers and Sunshine. It also brought Spring Fever Week from May 7 to the 1 1th, Just like Homecoming Week, every day had it's own theme: Monday was Hats Off to Teachers Day, Tuesday was Fifties Day, Wednesday was Western Day, along with the Western Style Barbeque at lunch, srritf 1ss Thursday was South Pacific Day to help promote the fantastic musical put on by our own Student body, and Friday was Spirit Day to show support for all of our athletic teams going on to league championships. That weekend also was the opening of the annual RHS musical, this year South Pacific. lt, along with Spring Fever Week, was a big hit. May also was the month for the '84-'85 Class and ASB elections. Senior Reception also was held in May. The pro- gram was a great success with the always awesome Senior Slide Show to take the Seniors back through the memories of their Senior year. And finally June, with June came all the Senior Activities: Senior Breakfast, Bac- calaureate, Senior Ball, and of course, Graduation and Senior Party. All of these added up to a terrific end of the high school years for the Class of '84 and a grand begin- ning for the rest of their lives. And a week after saying goodbye to the Seniors, school ended for everyone else and summer finally began. With the help of the 1983 national mile record holder, Matt Donnelly, 1600 meter and 3200 meter runners Paul Bainbridge and Terry Edwards and the other strong seniors, the team conquered and de- feated their oppponents. A well ba- lanced team, the Indians maintained and showed the pride and tradition which Renton High School has been known for throughout the state for many years. The girls' track team, young but ex- perienced, exhibited as much talent and strength as the boys, with impres- sive wins by Toni Williams, Lisa Jones, and Sue Lyons. Having only three seniors, the team prospered and improved throughout the season. The remainder of the team consisted of juniors, Dana Long, Kelli and Val Steiner, sophomores, Stacy Ringos, Dena Saano, Dionne Sligh and freshman Jane Dahlby. The RHS tennis team, after a loss of top players, had to make many adjustments in the lineup this year. Inexperience proved to be a key factor as young players moved up tothe varsity positions. Probably the most frustrating thing for Coach Hall and the team was the fact that many of the matches were lost by the score of 3-4, though this frustration was tempered by the hard play of all competitors. Throughout the season, fine play was demonstrated in girls singles by Lisa Cowley and Sonja Mejlaender. Dave Tappan and Dave Edwards both showed improvement in their singles games while playing the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. In doubles, Rose Kato and Chris Elliott proved to be a winning combination. Mark Winchester and Tim Monahan jumped to the varsity roster, displaying determination and promise.
