The INDIANS started off their football season with a pre-season game with Cascade. y There were many outstanding moments in the game, the first one came when jody Catz picked off an in- terception to give RENTON the first break of the game. Before the halftime intermission, Terry Harrison l had some great catches to give RENTON good field position. The third period started off great with BIG RED'S Scott Sugawara running in to give RENTON a six to zero lead. Late in the third period the most exciting play of the game came when Doug Skagen deflected a Bruins' pass and teammate Rick Patricelli caught it for REN- TON'S second interception of the night. The game continued on with Cascade scoring both in the fourth period to assure them the game 'I4-8. The battle between the two cross town rivals appeared to be no contest, as BIC RED wasted the Highlanders of Hazen, 21-0. The first half was scoreless. With three ticks on the clock, RENTON scored, but were unfortunately called back on a penalty. RENTON came out after the half, looking all together with a four yard run from junior fullback Steve Heck for RENTON'S final touchdown. Dana Gregory made the conversion good. The BIG RED defense did a great number on the raisins, by not allowing them a first down in the second half, RENTON scored their 21st point, and recovered five Hazen fumbles. RENTON showed t'h'ey were really mean and Hazen couldn't mess with the BIG RED MACHINE. Boom!!! RENTON started out strong in their second pre-season game of the year, with Doug Wohlman slipping in to give RENTON the lead 6-0 over old time rivals K-M. Penalties and fumbles stopped both clubs from scoring until K-M mounted a drive with one minute left in the half to take the lead 7-6 at the break. Both teams came out after the half looking very good, with K-M scoring again in the third quarter. But that wasn't all, BIG RED came back with a big drive. The school spirit was right behind them to push Doug Wohl- man in to give RENTON six more, within one point of a tie, they unfortunately failed the point after TD and K-M held the lead and took the win 20-12.- Eat them Raisins! lody Gatz goes to the air. BIG RED came out in their first league game ready to beat a tough Kentridge team. Full- back Steve Heck had an outstanding night by totaling 97 yards in the game. The game itself seemed to be two sided as BIG RED dominated the first half with good ball control. Doug Wohlman then went in for RENTON'S first T.D. and Mike Richardson slammed over to make the after try good. The second half was a little too much for RENTON as Kentridge scored twice in the third quarter and a big one in the fourth to give to the Chargers the win 22-8. Unforgettable described beautifully what happened Octo- ber 'I2tl'1 at RENTON HIGH SCHOOL STADIUM when REN- TON faced new town rivals Lindbergh for the all-city crown. Both teams were very much up for the game and showed it. At the end of regulation play the score stood zero for both sides. ' RENTON won the toss at mid field and elected to play of- fense first at the ten yard line while Lindbergh played defense, in the first overtime ever at RHS STADIUM. With everyone standing and screaming in the stands, REN- TON took no time messing around, with Mark Nealy running through the Eagles defense to score for RENTON. Now it was THE INDIANS' turn to play defense and they did a great job. The first play the Eagles got two tough yards and after that, two more. But BIG RED gave no more with RENTON'S Doug Morri- son breaking up a third-down toss and an Eagle incomplete Doug Wohlman deflects an Eagle threat. With rain pouring down, and the field covered with mud, BIG RED powered over a scoreless Grizzlies team. The defense did an outstanding jobagainst Glacier with RENTON'S Dave Little falling on a punt fumble, to give BIG RED its first break in the game. The next series of plays RENTON failed to get the necessary yardage and Glacier took over. They too didn't get the yardage, and were forced to punt. pass 1974 to give THE RENTON INDIANS the city title for the 1973 football season. Big Little came back again with the blocked punt that skidded out of bounds on Glacier's 10 yard line. Later RENTON's Mike Richardson ran in from 5 yards out to give THE INDIANS six on the board. The second quarter was just as the first with REN- TON on top and scoring 12 points to give them the lead at halftime. The second half,THE INDIANS played out the con- test by stopping Glacier's big threat of the night with an interception by Senior Doug Skagen at the 19 yard line of THE INDIANS. Our great team went on by stop- ping Glacier the rest of the night and took the victory 18 to 0. The Indians started slowly, turning the ball over by an in- terception and a fumble, both deep in their own territory. But regained momentum when Dale McDowell recovered a Tyee fumble on the 15 to stop the first Totem threat, and RENTON held on downs to stop the second one on the 24. RENTON took over the ball but didn't get anywhere and were forced to punt. Iody Gatz's kick was then fumbled by a Totem down field and recovered by Dave Little on the Tyee 19. RENTON then capitalized on the Totems' mistake and took the lead 8-0. The BIG RED defense had another great night when late in the game Mark Nealy picked off a pass setting up a two-play 75 yard mach with Nealy running 56 yeards to put the frosting on the cake and Dana Gregory putting the fin- ishing touches to a victorious homecoming game with the Steve Heck, on the warpath, breaks through. score standing RENTON 15, Tyee 0. Into gear goes THE BIG RED MACHINE. In the last season game for RENTON, Highline came through with some mysterious moments to hand an unbelievable loss to the RENTON INDIANS. RENTON was doing everything right with Steve Heck putting together big runsto move the ball to the six yard line of High- line and in scoring position for BIG RED. Then Mark Nealy caught a pitch out and ran into the end zone with three High- line players on his back to move RENTON within one point of Highline. At the half it stood six to seven, Highline's lead. The beginning of the third period started off slow with both clubs turning the ball over frequently, until Mark Nealy made a superb punt return of 63 yards to give RENTON the lead 12-7. Highline then had its mysterious moments and made a quick score to give them the lead and the game 'I3-12. S-C-O-R-E!! Our team is the best around, Wilt the Kilts. we're the best, RENTON came out onto the field very much up for the game and showed it as Scott Sugawara returned the opening kick off 78 yards to put the INDIANS ahead of the Highlanders 6-0. E After Hazen's first time with the ball and no pro- gress, THE BIG RED MACHINE took over and got moving again down field for six more with Steve Heck rambling over 5 yards of raisins for RENTON'S second score of the game. RENTON'S conversion was as successful as Doug Wohlman's pass to big Steve McDaniels for two more and RENTON lead the High- Ltt,. Coaches: lim Heck head, Bob Wraith, Perry Pickett, jerry Carr, lim Glockner, Lloyd Riddle landers 14-0. The Machine was again off and moving in the second period with McDaniels catch for his third of the night and a N.P.S.L. career record of 50 receptions. REN- TON kept on moving, and finally Doug Wohlman mowed over another five yards of raisins for a touch- down and a Dana Gregory kick to put RENTON up 20-O. The second half was a little bit of a turn around, but not enough as BIG RED held on by knocking down those raisins and showed themwho's the BEST IN RENTON. Final score 21-14. To everyone else who made contributions to Senior activities, thank you very much. The interest and en- thusiasm you showed was really great. As the school year was under way, many members of SENIOR COUNCIL participated in the fresh- man welcoming assembly. Careful planning and organization were the next steps in preparation for Homecoming. Bringing out a long, lost tradition, SENIOR COUNCIL planned and carried out a very suc- cessful parade through the downtown Renton area. With a lot of team effort from the coun- cil's members, committees were formed to car- ry out all the necessary duties for the Home- coming dance. Many times throughout the year, SENIOR COUNCIL helped arrange the early morning breakfasts for all the senior women. Adding a little creation to Baccalaureate this year, the SENIOR COUNCIL chose a folk service at a local church rather than the tra- ditional services held. Senior Ball was held at the Mansion of the Daughters of the American Revolution. With the band, Target, the memories of that night will always linger. Following graduation, SENIOR COUNCIL selected Crystal Mountain as their location for Senior Party. 'hw 4 Striving toda for a Fellow Students, Another school year has come to a close. Undoubt- edly some of you have not agreed with the decisions of student council. It is hard to satisfy everyone in such a large and diverse group as a student body but the accom- plishments of student council this past year were signif- icant. Student council appropriated money to replace our outdated basketball scoreboards and to purchase two voting machines. Tri-High was formed to solve problems common to all three high schools of Renton. The student parking problems were settled and a system of identify- ing student cars was put into effect. Widespread student apathy has been reduced. Many students not previously involved in activities have shown an interest in various clubs. More students than ever be- fore have participated in class councils. Pep club was re- organized this year and it has increased school spirit considerably. Tracie, Kathy and l have worked hard to fulfill the needs of the students. The achievements of this past year have shown that anything can be accomplished with the stu- dent body's support and help. Good luck to everyone in all future endeavors. Positive thinking, communications, parliamen- tary procedure, and the S.B.A., were topics cho- sen by the speakers who spoke to the group. Foreign Exchange: A step toward Gretchen Gil Pelletier, from Dominican Republic Rita Pera, from Brazil Never did I think I would spend a year in The U.S., much less to study at Renton High School. I don't think a year is enough time to analyze and evaluate the experience as a foreign exchange stu- dent in a civilization and culture so differant from mine. Here I have learned how to adjust to another environment and have had good experiences. The experiences I have had here will always re- main imperishable in my' memory and I know they will help me in coming years. My year here has been like in my own home because, in one way or another, everyone, teachers, classmates, and members of A.F.S. gave me great help and understanding for which I thank them all sincerely, and special thanks to my lovely American family, the Hiseys, who took me in like their own daughter and gave me such warm love. world friendship Walk together, talk together, all the people of the earth, for then, only then, shall we have peace. This is why when they asked me if I would like to leave the sun-baked surface of Brazil lock stock and barrel for deep freeze Seattle I said yesf' I had some objectives in mind like to observe the customs, to learn the language, but the most important to face one society completely different and while there make friends, understand them and also be understood. At the time I left Franca, my city, I didn't know what was going to happen to me but when the airplane arrived in Seattle and my host family and friends were expecting me, I could see how wonderful my year was going to be. I would like to thank Renton High School, Renton Rotary Club and my American family, the Mountjoy's for their help, understanding, and love. Now my time is over. I need to leave. I will go to Brazil and live there with the memories I had here. I promised myself some day I will come back and see you again, because I liked it here very much and you, Americans are lovely, wonderful!! Thank you very much. First I want to thank you very much for you gave me a great experience this year, from April to March of 1973. I know now that American people are friendly and kind. I'm happy for not only a great experience, but also that I could study with you and also talk together joyfully, at our l I Renton High School. I will never forget you. RENTON lead at half time 27-22. The Indians continued to play well but unfortunately the score was tied at the finish. Overtime started with K-M scoring and the Indians tying it up each time. RENTON got a good call and the ball back with eight seconds left. The ball was passed in to STEVE MCDANIELSQ a whistle blew and a foul was called with one second remaining. This brought STEVE to the line, and he was successful at both shots. Revenge at last. RENTON won 57-55 to give them the N.P.S.L. crown three years in a row. RENTON advanced to the West Central Tournament playing Mt. Rainier first, beating them 53-39 assuring them of a position in the STATE TOURNAMENT. This win moved RENTON to face 2nd ranked Mercer Island. RENTON, ready for this one, beat the unbeatens 59-46 putting them into the championship game of the West Central Tournament the next night. Big MAC ripped apart the Islanders with inside bas- kets. The things that really showed was STEVE MCDAN- IELS, DOUG MORRISON, and STEVE BUDINICH who outscored the starting Islanders counterparts, 43-7, and outrebounded them, 35-2. Despite the loss earlier in the year to the Islanders, BIG RED showed them that nobody messes with the tough RENTON INDIANS. The following night RENTON faced jefferson for posi- tion one in the tournament. The Indians played good but not good enough as they fell to the Raiders 51-58 sending them to Region 3 at U.P.S. Sr'-5' if v . at is N ' '4- RB it Vx -r Into the STATE TOURNAMENT went the Indians opening against Lincoln of Tacoma the first night of Region 3 play. The Tribe played very hard against a team similar to the Indians but came out on the short end 57-48. This put RENTON against Olympia for the third spot of Region 3. The Indians played great despite an early injury to RANDY LEIEER and three quick fouls on MCDANIELS. RANDY returned to the court pumping in outside shots to put the Tribe within one point at the half. After six straight points by the Bears in the second half, STEVE MCDANIELS returned to get the Tribe to- gether. Buckets by MILLER and HARRISON and four free throws by MAC gave RENTON a 36-33 lead. The Bears got the lead but Renton came back to go on top. With 11 seconds remaining Olympia charged to with- in two I51-535 on a pair of free throws. The second one missedg RENTON got the rebound and DOUG WOHL- MAN was fouled. The two shots swished and RENTON won 55-53. The win advanced RENTON to the finals at Hec Ed- mudson Pavilion where the Tribe tangled with Central Valley. The Indians played hard in the first two periods. STEVE BUDINICH canned a shot at the buzzer to give the Tribe a slim 24-22 lead at the half. The Tribe returned amidst the cheers of RENTON fans to take a big 34-26 lead and ending the third period on top 34-30. The Bears took their first, second-half lead 40-38, with 3:50 to go. LEIFER scored a lay-in and STEVE MCDANIELS hit to give RHS a 42-40 lead. The Indians had the game with 43 seconds left with two crucial free throws by RANDY LEIFER to give the Tribe a 44-40 edge. Central Valley then came back to tie the game, but pressed by the Indian's defense. The game went into overtime with both teams playing hard-but unfortunately the Bears were on the long end of it and won 51-46. 87 Tradition that keeps RHS among the top Spirit exactly describes what these girls have brought out to the RHS student body. The girls attended the World Cheer- leading Council Camp last summer bring- ing back three superior ratings and one excellent. This year's squad consists of Karen Mano, Gale Shinozaki, Patty Mad- den, Kim McCloud, Tammy Watanabe, Carol Schwendeman, and Carol Hardie, plus the advisorship of Miss Ford. A lot of thanks has to go to Richard Breslin and Brad Ellis, our RHS yell leaders With friendship, understanding, and a lot of enthusiasm, they made this year a fantastic and spirited one. Consisting of 46 members in the band, they participated in the winter and spring concerts, band contests, and music Festivals. During the football season the RHS marching band started their practices at seven o'clock in the morning to prepare for their excellent performances at the football games during half- time. Combined with style, timing and talent, the marching band giving their support. Showing that they have style and grace is the cadet band. Proving that the frosh have spirit, they perform concerts throughout the year and showing that their musical talent is very important for the school spirit in the future. In their first year, the Pep Band showing their support, playing at pep assemblies, basketball games, and also keep- ing the cheerleaders going and the spirit up. Buzz, buzz, hammer, hammer, saw, saw, paint, paint. Throughout the year as you were hurrying past the auditorium to be on time for class, you may have heard strange sounds behind the stage. Maybe you never took note of these odd noises, but when you attended concerts or plays at school there was always beautiful back- ground scenery. This outstanding art work was done willingly and enthusias- tically by RHS's own STAGE CREW. Under the direction of MR. TED BROWN and IANICE lACl. STAGE CREW manages to create colortul backgrounds by designing, building and painting sets. Besides STAGE CREW, MAKE-UP CREW also worked dilegently trans- forming behind the scenes everyday RHS students into whole new people. They used their talents along with ma- terials such as grease paint, latex, fake hair, and dura wax, to change the char- acters. Together these two crews worked and made the year a successful one for RHS. l i, w af f .ai ss. I i Boy, Randy, your new perfume is getting to me. A Cappella is beaut unadorned Reflections upon the 1973-1974 A Cappella Choir can only bring back memories of a year filled with en- lightenment and the apprehension of performing. This year's choir highlighted the Fall, Winter, and Spring Concerts with its superior vocalizing. The sixty-three member group attended the Annual Choir Festival at the University of Washington and also traveled to Spokane for Expo '74 in May. Through the S.B.A. fund, A Cap- pella acquired a shell which en- hanced their music even more. Mr. Richard Houser, the Choir director, has made Renton High School well known for its outstand- ing musical performances. That's what Renton High School has had more than ever this year, thanks to a great club. Inactive since 1969, Pep Club has come to life once again with more energy and surprising ideas to contribute to the school. You couldn't help but notice the colorful signs covering the walls - encouraging, supporting and congratulating all team sports through- out each season. Never failing to recognize a team, the enthusiasm of this group kept them going strong all year. Under the leadership of loAnne Antovich, the determined student co-ordinatorg and Mrs. Allen, advisor, these students met every Wednesday to discuss activities and paint signs. Besides sign-making Pep Club found a great variety of other things to keep them busy around the school all year. For Homecoming '73 they made sure everyone was floating on air by selling helium-filled balloons. And RHS students really went for the idea, buying nearly all of the red and white balloons. But that's still not all. Pep Club members put out a tremendous effort in selling buttons and baking goodies for the teams throughout the year. All in all it was a very active, fun-filled, and rewarding year for Pep Club. loAnne Antovich Ev ostwick ori Rhonda Box Sue Budinich Carrol Clymer Michelle Collins Michelle Courage Lisa Dallasto Barb Gamrath Angela Gardin Gretchen Gil Paul Hanson Carol Hardie Mary Hisey Marie Iwasaki Colleen Kearns Mari Kodama Serena Louie Patty Madden Karen Mano Lisa Mayer janet McBain Kim McCloud Bonnie Morrison Laurie Nakahara Sharon Nakahara Lisa Nealy Patti Niemi Patti Noritake Liz O'Hara Shannon Ramsey Colleen Reardon Molly Richter Carol Schwendeman Gail Shinozaki Suzanne Smith Nancy Smyth Ronda Taylor Shirlee Tsuchida Alison Walkden Tammy Watanabe Karen Watt Kathy Watt Bette White Lori Zirkle wie? ffk' 1 ff 7m M Z i ,,,f V I f Y ,f 5 Q i Egmgf' ,tg K4y:,t35 W QYQQQ I ?g ' Ei ig Q ,Sit a L Try it, you'Il like it! They started the year off by interviewing girls and boys for Girl and Boy of the month, which two were chosen every month from the first of the year to the last. As time went on they made a court for the Homecoming Queen and Princesses. During that same week they had a carnation sale, which n K ,, I dxf ax They work around the clock was very successful, in encouraging the school spirit. Towards the middle of the year they sponsored the faculty tea and winter tolo. Then finally rollin' around the end of the BIG year of 1973-74, they sponsored a spring tolo and a mother's tea. That was the goal of this years drill team. Under the advisorship of Miss Bucher they attained their goal. The drill team practiced long and hard before school and first period to develop their precision drills. In their spare time drill team has sponsored many money raising projects. They had a car wash to raise money to buy their uniforms. They sponsored a P.T.A. dance and held a bake sale at Open House. And that's not all. Among other things they sold candy bars, peanut brittle and held a glass recycling drive. Sf E s S r 'l ! 5 E a In ste All Qi! Q , ,lr K ' 'Y .. mi. , a ex I rl' il: 535.
