During the summer, Senior Council held car washes to raise money and made plans for the years activities. This year was the first year that Homecoming was ever handled completely by the stu- dents. lt was a success thanks to the hard work and enthusiasm of those who were involved, especially the Senior Council members. They were fantastic. and I enjoyed working with them. They really cared, and wanted to make '73 a year to remember. As in many activities, the lack of participation was sometimes disappointing. I found that often the most valuable people in a group are the people who don't think they count. But all the Senior council members and the other R.H.S. students helped make this year special for me. I wish you all success and happiness in the future. '53 41' 3 X Jr. Council made a good class. .betterl A great year for Junior Council, led by Rep. MARK PROTHERO, started out with a first prize for hall dec- orations during Homecoming week. This made the class of '74 a second-time winner! Another activity in- cluded the decorating of the RHS stadium, where the Juniors worked hard to make it a successful Home- coming for everyone. Junior Council may have even started a new tradition this year. For the first time, the Juniors held their annual event, Junior Prom, off campus. The dinner and dance were held in the Ever- green Room at the Renton-Sheraton Inn. These events were just a few of the many activities Junior Council was involved in this year. Junior Council helped to make a good class even better. Freshman Council, led by Rep. BRAD LANSING, started out the year with Home- coming hall decorations and proved to be Foremost To add to the enthusiasm ot the class. Frosh Council organized a Pep Club to inspire a bigger turnout at Freshman activities. A spring dance sponsored by the Freshman brought an end to their first year at RENTON. Dear Fellow Students, There is always a great deal of talk concerning wide- spread student apathy toward many activities includ- ing Student Council. Yet no student is totally apathe- tic. We all have different interests and desires which determine what activities we like to pursue. For this reason, Student Council will never get a majority of the students actively and consistently participating in it. Yet with a strong group of dedicated students working with the occassional help of a large portion of the student body, we can make remarkable progress. Very few people realize how difficult it is to make changes and advancements in our school system and democratic society. This year I was suddenly awakened to this very disturbing fact. Nevertheless Student Council with the help of the student body did make some definite progress. We completely rewrote the 25- year-old school constitution which was vague and bad- ly outdated. The student smoking problem and result- ing damage to students cars and property was for the most part alleviated. Plans were drawn up and work is to be started in the near future on the student park. A school wide anti-pollution and recycling project was carried out with great success. There were num- erous committees, including curriculum and student lounge, which were created to meet the need of the students. As Lori, Sally, and I tried earnestly to show this year, if students dedicate themselves and truly desire to accomplish a certain goal, there is nothing in the world that can stop them. Good luck to everyone, Ken Shellan S.B.A. President Wt W' mv! 9 accomplishing goals QSM ,ff We . :fr if ABOVE: Ken Shellan, Gail Parsons, Dave Olson Sara Sugawara, Doug Morrison, Sharon Mar Karen Narasaki, Brad Lansing. One of the councils activi- ties was the revision of our school constitution. Plans were made for a student park and there was a pizza dinner before the Feb. 16 Hazen game. Also a committee worked on the student lounge and many plans were carried out for redecoration. This year they have shown what student government means. Under the excellent direction of Mr. Terry Grove and Drum Major Larry Harger the RHS Band has had another sensa- tional year. ln their active and successful year, the band performed at the Winter and Spring Concerts, football pep assemblies and football games, at the Christmas assembly, at a band contest, and a band concert with the Dimmitt Band and an elementary band. Also, during the entire football season, the band was a superb and enjoyable part of the halftime activities. With their new directer the band has done well and we are sure that as in the past the band will continue to be the out- standing performers they have always been. When the time you have is so short, it is also difficult to reach a standard of excellence set in years past. This is a problem that has plagued A Cappella Choir for years, and this year was no excep- tion. Under the direction of Richard Houser, the 74-member Choir overcame the problem of time and made this year one of the best ever. Their performances included a combined concert with the band in November, a service at the University Methodist Temple, and Christmas and Spring Concerts at R.H.S. The hi-light of the year was singing in the ballroom at Portland's Hilton Hotel for the Northwest Music Educators Convention. A Cappella also participated in choir exchanges with Lindbergh High in Renton and Mead High in Spokane. It's been one hectic year for our A Cappella Choir, but they've come through it together, and stronger than ever before. X. .f .W CHOIR COUNCIL: SEATED: Rae Mur- doch, Jean Leonard, Claudia Copple. Besides singing for the entertainment of the school, they have entertained the whole commu- nity. They have performed at the All-School Show, the Political Rally, the Homecoming Assembly, St. Stephen the Martyr, and Lindbergh High. A Kiawanis luncheon, a concert, and other civic activities were all part of their busy schedule. Singing wasn't the only thing this group had in common. Going to the Haunted House, roller skating, and a dinner party were a few other things they enjoyed. The Swing Choir not only accom- plished a job they set out to do, but also built a sense of pride and fulfillment in themselves by bringing the joy of music to others. Hl mw M SWMN.. In addition to that, the student's family, of course, does play an important role in giving him a strong base for his ad- iustment, which should result in a pleasant year. My personal experiences are a wild mix- ture of a large number of things, and would be very hard to say with only one or two words. l would like to express my thanks to the teachers, students, A.F.S. chapter, and es- pecially my host family the Roffeys. They have all made it possible for me to get an inside-view of the life of a student in an American school. Yves Raeber is-,W - n r The Foreign Exchange Club is made up of involved, interested students whose thoughts wonder further than the borders of the United States. Their goal is to make sure the incoming A.F.S. students are happy at R.H.S. The Club also sup- ports the exchange programs by rais- ing money. By being in Foreign Ex- change Club, it gives you a closer look at the role played bv a stu- dent who is picked to live abroad for ayear. h This year, the two A.F.S. finalists from Renton are Sue Ullman and Bill Fenner. Their applications were sent to New York, and they are anxiously awaiting to see if they will be chosen. , Z RHSc:Iubs so many different interests. . Winkels, has accomplished many of their goals. The twenty-eight member club participated in many activities for the Maple Wood Heights Headstart. They sponsored a Halloween party, a Thanks- giving and a Christmas party for this group. They lent their talent in the design- ing ofa haunted house at Skyway Elemen- tary School and the display case across from the school store. They were also a great help to the Special Education class with job interviews. Babysitting during a Cancer Society Bazaar was just one more way they helped in the community. Through the year DECA has accom- plished their goal to develop future leaders in marketing and distribution while helpinginthe community. Getting it together Once a year the two pop representatives of the RHS Music Department get together to offer the students a break from the old grind. January 25th was the day, and the Swing Choir and Stage Band really put on a show. The Swing Choir got the show on the road with Walk on By , l Dig Rock and Roll , Laura , and I Believe in lVlu- sic . Following a great group isn't always easy but Stage Band proved they could face the challenge with numbers like Shaft , Valdez , and l'm a Man . Getting it together is what it's all about, so the two groups brought the Pops Concert to a close performing Save the Country , He Ain't Heavy , and The Declaration . From the sweet and mellow, to the loud and rhythmic the Pops Concert offered an hour of music for everyone to lis- ten to and enjoy. ff' 5 5? N xg SSX it is NS. H3 After a year's absence, the Chieftain came back for a really strong year. The staff did a fantastic job all year long in keep- ing up with the activities and the accom- plishments of the students of RHS. Under- the capable leadership of Editor-in Chief, Bill Fenner, the Chieftain staff kept on top of all the news year long, and produced a newspaper of top quality. Although the first semester's staff had only 9 members, joining them at the semese ter break were 13 new journalists. Together they combined the new ideas with the old and came through with articles of interest for all. Without the Chieftain, students would have missed enjoyable reading about them' selves. The subjects were as varied as the reporters who wrote them. The work and effort the staff put forth, proved to be well worth it. Heres hoping that next year's Chieftain proves to be as informative and amusing as this year's has been. zz' VA 'ii' C t 'M i , i: 'r T Zi' X- l 'F LEFT: Editor-in-Chief, Bill Fenner, points out some of the basics to Alan Com paan. In 3rd quarter action, the INDIANS forced Mt. Rainier to punt after one set of downs. MARK TAYLOR and KIM HUBNER blocked the boot, giving RENTON the ball. On the second play KANGAS bolted 52 yards to give BIG RED 8 points. Midway-through the 4th quarter, TAYLOR blocked another punt. With the swift run- ning of TRIGG and KANGAS, RENTON putthe ball on the Ram's 11 yard line, where WOHL- MAN carried the ball for another T.D. A 2- point conversion was completed by KANGAS. CRAIG ELTON cinched the game with a 40 yard interception for a return touchdown to prove N-N-N-Nobody messes with the BIG RED MACHINE! RENTON 14 - Hazen 20 The RENTON INDIANS started their '72 season out strong with a non-league game against Hazen. RENTON'S BILL KANGAS intercepted a pass for a 66-yard T.D. run and RON SHELTON toed the conversion making it 7-O at the end of the first quarter. Hazen then came back for revenge, taking the lead with a T.D. and 2-point conversion. Their kick-off was then re- turned for a 35-yard run by RICH TRIGG, and with DALE MCDOWELL and STEVE MCDANIELS opening the way, KAN- GAS ran a swift 42 yards for another T.D. The PAT was good to give a half-time score of 14-8. In the 3rd quarter Hazen fumbled and RENTON'S CRAIG ELTON came up with the ball. This gave BIG RED fourth quarter hopes. Another T.D. for Hazen tied the game at 14-14, with MARK TAYLOR blocking the tie-breaking point. The RENTON defense stayed tough but Hazen was able to slip one more past for the final score of 14-20. RENTON 6 - Glacier 7 SJ N N fy BIG RED faced a tough match in their 3rd game of the season when they met the Glacier Grizzlies. Both teams defensive units proved to be strong in the first half, leaving the score O-O, with outstanding jobs done by REN- TON'S LARRY LENO and BOB WOHLMAN. With possession of the ball in the 3rd period, the INDIANS moved their way into a first and goal position on the 7. With MCDANIELS operating as fullback and leading the way, KANGAS went in for the touchdown. Despite missing the extra point, RHS feltgood with its 6-O lead. Late in the 4th quarter Glacier came up with a T.D. and lowered BIG RED'S hopes when the kick was good. The RENTON INDIANS tried their hardest to get back the lead but at the final gun the score was 7-6. Q .. .3 is I K ., S .v V .,i.. K i ' - i ,. ...M ,.., .. ....,,.. ,.l.,,...... RENTON started off strong as they kicked off and were able to hold the Totems forcing them to punt. Having possession of the ball, BIG RED scored 16 points in no time at all, with the swift running of KANGAS for both T.D.'s and MCDAN- IELS and TRIGG both in for two. Before the end of the quarter both teams were able to score giving RENTON a 22-6 lead. In the 2nd quarter KANGAS came back to score 6 POINTS. PAT was good. A Tyee fumble recovered by RAN- DY NEALY lead to another T.D. for RENTON. Coming into the 2nd half the score read 36-6. RICH TRIGG was able to add another six to that. Tyee gained their only other points in the game by falling on a fumble in the end zone. The final score was 44-12, which proves RENTON'S defense was tough, as they held Tyee to a minustwo yards rushing. RENTON 18 - Kennedy 6 After a defeat last week, RENTON came back to overtake the Lancers with a score of 18-6. RENTON kicked off to Ken- nedy to begin the game, and after several attempts the Lan- cers were forced to give up the ball. BILL KANGAS ran 60 yards for 6 points but several flags called him back and the T.D. was nullified. The first quarter remained scoreless but with ten minutes left in the first half a swift pass from DOUG MORRISON to STEVE MCDANIELS in the end zone set the score at 6-O. A fumble recovery by DAN ROOT on Kennedy's 18-yard line made it possible for KANGAS to make another T.D. for BIG RED, leaving the score 12-O at the end of the first half. In the third and fourth quarters RENTON gained another 6-points from two field goals kicked by RON SHELTON. Al- though Kennedy came up with a T.D. in the last few minutes of the game, RHS was still able to walk away with the victory over the Lancers. RENTON 6 - Kent Meridian 22 Although BIG RED played tough, they weren't strong enough to stop their val- ley rivals, Kent Meridian, from taking the victory away with them. The Royals ran 6 plays within min- utes to score 8 points and take the lead. but an 87-yard return run by BILL KAN- GAS to the KM goal line gave RHS 6 points and set the score at 8-6. Kent came back to score again and with 3 minutes remaining in the first quarter the scoreboard read 14-6. In the second quarter action BILL KANGAS and BOB WOHLMAN both ran swiftly, but the Royal defense stopped BIG RED from scoring again. A key interception by ROD NOBLE prevented KM from scoring in the 3rd quarter but the Royals got possession of the ball in the 4th to score 8 points, giving a final score of 22-6 and a sad loss for RENTON. RENTON 19 - Evergreen 26 The INDIANS took a hard loss when they fell to the Wolverines in the last four minutes of play. RENTON received the opening kick- off but was unable to move the ball, so Ever- green took over possession and scored 12 points with 6 minutes left in the half. BIG RED then picked up momentum and scored 7 points by a pass from RANDY NEALY to STEVE IVICDANIELS in the end zone, with RON SHELTON addingthe extra point. In the third quarter BILL KANGAS carried the ball 32 yards to put RHS in Wolverine territory, and with another pass by NEALY to IVICDANIELS the INDIANS took the lead, 13-12. On the first play of the fourth quarter BOB STERLING recovered a fumble and set the touchdown for KANGAS. Within the next few minutes Evergreen scored another 6 points, RENTON fumbled, and the Wolverines took command with another T.D. and the victory ofthe game. 124 A little lower to the left please V V I RENTON 18 - Highline 28 The INDIANS took on the Pirates with a hard-fought battle but at the final gun BIG RED was on the short end of a 28-18 score. The Pirates took an early lead 10-O, but some fine defensive plays by LARRY LENO, BILL CULP, and MARK TAYLOR, stopped them from scoring again in the first half. BIG RED bounced in the third period with BILL KANGAS going in for 6 points. A pass interception by STEVE SMITH set up a play for another T.D. run by RANDY NEALY, and put RHS on top, 12-10. RENTON scored its third touchdown after a fumble recovery by BILL CULP, on Highline's 23. NEALY went in again for the T,D. with 5 minutes left in the third quarter. Highline scored again 3 times in the remaining period to take the lead and put the victory out of reach for the INDIANS. RENTON 6- Kentridge 34 Homecoming night was a sad one for RHS. The INDIANS played their best but Kentridge was just too tough. RHS was unable to score until the 3rd quarter when RICH TRIGG threw a 60-yard pass to BILL KAN- GAS. The try for 2 points failed and again Kentridge was given the ball. Even though the INDIANS played strong, the Chargers were able to go away with a 34-6 victory. ws.
