Washington State M-A- B.A. ENGLISH DEP RTMENT The goals of the English Department are to develop an appreciation of many types of good literature, and to ac- quaint the student with the skills 'and techniques that will increase his ability to read and write with a clear under- standing of the language. The department functions by means of a curriculum which is designed to develop pupil proficiency in speaking, writing, listening, observing, and evaluating. Senior English is provided for those students who wish to further their academic education. OGI L STUDIE DEP RTMENT The Social Studies Department functions to guide the growth and development of youth in society. Young people are then better prepared to cope intelligently with the prob- lems of modern civilization. People who have mastered the skills of democratic action are the ones who can make de- mocracy work. The foreign language depart- ment provides an opportunity for elective studies in six languages: French, German, Italian, Latin, Spanish, and Russian. Students taking these languages are taught to speak, read, write, and most of all to comprehend the lan- guage. Listening and speaking experiences are gained through the use of the language lab. Each student is assigned to a counselor to whom he may go to for help and guidance in matters pertaining to his school life. One of the responsi- bilities of the counselor is to assist the student in under- standing himself, vocationally and educationally-wise. They must also work with teachers and parents in developing a better understanding of students. Counseling requires study in social and biological sciences, and humanities. The purpose of all homemaking education is the strengthening of family life and to help to give a better un- derstanding of the basic fundamentals of meal planning, nutritions, home nursing, and sewing. All girls are required to take this course at the ninth grade level.
