This group representing the students provides an opportunity for student opinion and thinking to be heard through representatives of his own choosing. lt enables him to feel that he has a share - that he participates - in the management of the school. lt is not self government - it is participation in government. When properly organized, supervised and understood, it is the most important single piece of machinery in the high school. Working cooperatively with the administration it becomes the interpreter to the stu- dents of established or new policies. The Board is concerned with every condition, action, or influence that would affect the orderly growth of the student or the progress of the school. This means, the health and safety, morals and morale, and many other topics that are the property of the teacher and student alike. It is systematic and complete. The purpose of the members is to learn by experimentation and observation the basic scientific prin- ciples. Members indicate their major interest and may belong to one or more sub-groups dealing with their chosen field. This year the sub-groups covered the general fields of electronics, atomic physics, chemistry and geology. Each sub-group is responsible for one or more demonstrations to be given before the club at specified times. These demonstrations plus talks and demonstrations given by special guests constitute the program of the club meeting every third Thursday of each month. The March meeting featured a lecture by the adviser on atomic physics while in April a man from the Bell Telephone Company spoke to and gave a demonstration for the club. Officers of the group are elected on a half-year basis. The chief objective of the Lettermen's Club is to render school service. lts other goals are to promote good sportsmanship and to aid in promoting smooth-running athletic functions. To achieve these ends the organization operates a hall patrol which maintains orderly halls during the noon hour. Also the club provides a parking patrol which, during football season, helps solve parking congestion at the stadium. There also is a lettermen's patrol at basketball games and track meets which is responsible for setting up and disassembling hurdles and bleachers. The Big R sponsors an annual Lettermen's Ball during basketball season with cooperation of the City Recreation Council. This year's officers were Tom Winders, Dick Hicklin and Jim Hanseng president, vice president and sec- retary, respectively. The club's adviser is Mr. John E. Suzick. J-lurralz for l6cr1f011 The Pep Club was organized this year by a group of students desiring to promote school spirit and sports- manship. lts supervisor is lvlr. Breslin, who spends many hours during and after school working with the students. Membership in this club is different from most clubs for this club's membership is classed in two ways: active and inactive. That is, if a student is turning out for a sport or activity in the fall he is an inactive member during this time. When spring comes around he is classed as an active member and works hard with the club. Some of the duties of the club are the painting of the decorative signs which are placed throughout the halls before basketball games, the paper hats and picket signs which Renton displayed at the state tournament this year, and the most important is the strengthening of school spirit and sportsmanship. The officers for this year were: President, Loren lrwing Vice President, Gene Haynes: Secretary, Mary Smith. The club has just started this year but has proved to be a great success. lt is now up to the classes of the following years to carry on its great deeds and services. Cake .7f 5asy The Hall Patrol is composed of six competent boys, all lettermen, having a tree fourth period. Their duty is to keep order in the halls, especially during the noon hour. Ken Edwards is captain of the patrol. Mr. Suzick and Mr. Hodges act as faculty advisers. Hats off!! These boys are doing a swell job. FRONT ROW: Shelly Gerarden, Don Emmons, Doug Troyer. So you think the cheerleader has life easy! Well, you have another thought coming. The cheerleaders have to practice two nights a week, prepare and give pep assemblies, introduce new yells and lead the students in cheering. In the center of all the excitement and tension at the games are the five cheerleaders, Darlene Butkovich, Jackie Irby, Jonell Drazich, Pat Flaherty and Don Neuberger. These five seniors boost the students' school spirit and cheer the team to victory. If their work is satisfactory, at the end of the year they earn plaque credit and receive an emblem to wear on their sweaters. '27 Go! l6l1yfl1m The Pep Band under the leadership of Mr. Randy Rockhill has done a great job this year! lt has given the student body its support at all the public affairs and at our Pep assemblies. The band also played at basket- ball games, the Winter Band Concert and exchange assemblies. The seventeen member band does mostly swing numbers for the Pep assemblies. They add a lot of Jive to the spirits of the kids before and at the games. More serious numbers are played at the concerts. This is the fourteenth year that we've had the Pep Band and our thanks go to this group for adding so much pep and pleasure to all our activities. Next came all the hard work that goes into planning and rehearsing for half-time entertainment at the home football games. Ron Shields, drum major, lead the maneuvers on the field. The fourteenth annual Winter Band Contest was presented January l5. The next major public appear- ance was the Western Washington Band Contest held at Renton this year. For the past twelve years our band has received a superior rating at this contest. A new venture this year was the band tour to various other schools. Then, May fifteenth, the band pre- sented the Spring Concert. To help manage this large band' a band council of the following students served this year: Judy Battello, Barbara Haugen, C-ary Kawachi, Joe Mance and Ron Shields. Mr. Rockhill is advisor. The managers who took care of the uniforms were Judy Battello and Linda Mathieson. Hats off to the band that has given us so many hours of enjoyment! The accomplishments this year include the All-School Show, the Christmas Concert, the Spring Concert, the Choral Contest, Baccalaureate, and many local club programs. This year the A Cappella Choir has been a hard working organization, commented Mr. Bergh. They have spent many additional hours outside of class preparing a wide variety of music-modern, classic, show, and seasonal music are all included in their year's work. Softly as zz ,Morning Sunrise Gaining experience in harmony and musical procedure are fifty-five selected girls, under the direction of lvlr. Glenn Bergh. Did you see my powder puff? These are only a few of the familiar cries heard from the make-up crew when preparing for a play. The crew, under the supervision of Mr. Phillip Hansen, is composed of twenty members with Mickey Dona- van as chief technician and Sarah Jane Allison and Darlene Butkovich as head technicians. The group works together in preparing for their three major productions, the Senior High Play, the All-School Show and the Senior Play. They read over the plays, analyzing the characters and choosing the types of make-up to be used. Some- times they practice on one another to perfect a certain effect wanted. Usually for the productions, with the exception of the All-School Show, they are divided into two teams, one working Thursday night and the other on Friday. Besides the plays held at school, the make-up crew works on clown make-ups at Hallowe'en for Kiwanis Club. During this past year, besides learning to apply make-up, the crew has learned to requisition new make-up and also have written a constitution, They have worked hard this year and should be congratulated for their fine work. The Queen and her court were honored at the Annual Homecoming Game which was played with Puyallup and at the dance at the Spanish Castle. During intermission at the Spanish Castle, Peggy was crowned Queen of 1952 by our Queen of l95l, Teresa Allingham. During the week prior to the coronation, the girls were guests at luncheons and dinners of various Renton clubs. They were interviewed, photographed and featured on T.V. Sweet Afeilauf' Blue Hawaii was the theme for this year's Senior Ball, which was a great success. Among the decora- tions were palm trees and other various tropical scenery. The Mood Makers furnished the music. During the intermission, Shirley Ennis and Dick Thrasher were mistress and master of ceremonies. The Senior Trio sang a few selections and Jackie Irby pantomimed a popular song. After the Ball many of the students who attended ate at the Blockhouse, which was reserved especially for them. Mrs. Bernice Everett was faculty general chairman, and worked with the various advisers in planning this successful event. Bright red pants were proudly worn by a few fellows who, incidentally, did their own dye jobs. String ties also made an appear- ance. High spot of the week was the Tolo Dance Friday night. Even though he was garbed in a crepe paper cape, Ken Edwards made a very regal ruler. Ken was crowned by Barbara Easterbrooks during the intermission activities, which consisted of a vocal refrain by the Junior Trio and a pantomime by Em Holcomb and Jackie Matteson. During intermission everyone was entertained by the Junior Trio, consisting of Barbara Karstens, Arlene Bartley and Marilyn Grove, singing ln An Old Dutch Garden. Ron Malmassari played his accordian, and Donna Murdock and Ron Rolla sang a duet, Tip Toe Through the Tulips. Master of ceremonies was Ray Park. Labeled the dark horse of the tournament, the Renton ln- dians turned on all that horsepower to win the Washington State Championship for the first time in the tourney's 29 years. Well, so much for that. Since this is an Annual sketch, the article calls for a brief resume of the season. Favored at the start of the season because of the host of exper- ience on the squad, Jack Brattus, Ken Ed- wards, Doug Troyer, Spiral Bosley, George Strugar, Butch Arnone and transfers Cale Katterhagen and Keith Tonkin, plus sopho- more Clyde Dunson, formed quite a reliable team in the clutch, as they had to prove time and again. The Redmen displayed their bundle of power in two pre-season contests against Bellevue and Everett, winning by respective scores of 59-33 and 54-43. It was the first time the Indians had won a contest from Everett on the Seagull's home court. ln non- league games the highly touted Tribe won five and lost none. They were off and running with ll straight wins under their belt, when along came a team called White River. What hap- pened? Need you ask? Renton got beat 39-3l by a hot shooting team. Anyway it was interesting to note how the lndians bounced back to win their next four games, only to be beaten by Puyallup 43-42, But this didn't stop them as they won all the rest of their league games to rise from the battlefields as co-champions of the PSL League, sharing the limelight with Puyallup. CHUCK BURDULIS llM HANSEN BUTCH ARNONE GALE KATTERHACEN IACK BRATTUS THE TRU! OF TOWN The rest is history. How Renton entered the West Central District tourney and whip- ped Bellevue 74-50, Puyallup 48-47, and another top team, Bremerton, 63-45. How the lads from our Alma Mater zipped through the first games of the state tourney downing Lincoln 45-40 and Cleveland 60- 37. Right about here things start to get exciting, Next on the agenda is Elma, headed by a telescopic individual named Cary Nel- son. Coach Liefer devised a system to beat the Eagles, and beat them they did! George Strugar held Big Nelson to l3 points. On to the championship game, a mite anti-climati- cal to be sure, but thrilling nevertheless. Behind 7 points with 3 minutes to go. The Rentonites showed cool poise, the poise Aberdeen lacked, and Renton pulled the game out of the bag by a slim 3 points, Sl -48. State Champs at last! But, the glory for the athletes doesn't stop there. All-State honors were bestowed on two of our midst. George Strugar, who scored 450 points during the season, re- ceived first team votes and Doug Troyer ended up on the third team. Strugar added his award to the all-conference honors he won earlier in the year. Not to be outdone, Keith Tonkin, who scored 208 points, won a berth on the all-conference second team. Jack Brattus and Chuck Burdulis were given honorable mention. Now l think a note of congratulations to the team and the coach is in order. Hail to the Renton High Indians, Washington State Champions of l953. You earned it, fellas!! Cake ,Me Ou! in thc 157111 5111146 This year's club should be right on top if they play and do what they are expected to do. The power in batting is expected to be greater than last year's club. There are eight returning lettermen in the year's baseball club. They are: Jim Hansen, George Smith, George Strugar, Remo Nicoli, Chuck Burdulis, Gene Pedersen, Doug Troyer and Dick Hicklin. The probable lineup for this year's club will be: Gene Pedersen lst base, Don Dowdell 2nd base, Doug Troyer short stop, Chuck Burdulis 3rd base, George Smith left field, Remo Nicoli center field, Fay Millet right field, George Strugar and Ron Hicklin catchers, and Jim Hansen pitcher. Congratulations to the team and to Mr. O'Brien, their coach. 6'imicrella Well, here it is track season once more, which is about the time minds begin to reminisce about the season gone by and all its merits. By usual standards Renton High School's i952 track and field squad ranked up near the top of the heap throughout the state. Only one flaw marred the path to that all-important top berth. It is the fact that as a team the Indian thinclads were great, but individually they lacked first place strength. For instance, three times the Redmen encounted the Clover Park Warriors and three times the Parkers were beaten decisively, but because of outstanding individual showing, the green-and-white took home the State Championship from Pull- man, Washington. Enough analyzing, now down to work. Outstanding performance of the season is proferred from Don Murdock, broadiumper, who leaped twenty- one feet, four inches in the meet at Pullman to take first place in the event and the honorary title of all-staterf' Runners-up for spotlight honors were Darrell Webster, who vaulted eleven feet, Bill Fain who highjumped five feet, ten and three-quarters inches, and Ron Heiret who sprinted to innumerable victories in the two hundred twenty-yard dash. Other standouts were Richard Rockey, Lyle Olson, Frank Tobacco, Walt Wilson, Tom Dobson, Ken Edwards, and Gary Routley. All these fellows plus others contributed their all to win the Con- ference Championship and other league victories for the old Alma Mater. Now to the present season. Coached by Dwight Felton, the track mentor, the lndians have had three meets at the time this article was written: with Highline, Everett-Sedro-Woolley and the most recent one with Puy- allup and Sumner. The Redmen whipped Highline sixty-six and one-third to forty-four and two-thirds, Everett llet's just say Renton came in second to Everettl, and downed Puyallup and Sumner seventy-eight and five- sixths to thirty-two and one-sixth to twenty-six. From all indicated signs the Redmen seem to be headed in the right direction, but one hurdle is obstructing their way - Clover Park! The Warriors have given every indication that they are as good if not better than last year. Ah well, tough competition makes the season interesting. Baseball, volleyball and basketball are the regularly scheduled activities, but bowling, which is optional, is also provided. Two points are earned for each turnout and five extra if you're on a winning team. An additional lOO points are alloted to those having perfect attendance, Seventy-five percent of the girls with the highest number of points receive letters toward the close of the year at the annual award assembly. Credit for this smooth-running organization is due to Miss Agnes Stewart, supervisor, and her helpers, Miss Greenlee, Miss Bunch and Mrs. Wranstedt. Cru far Zfufo Going into its second season here at Renton, the golf squad looks as if it has improved over that of last year. Although much the same team, the fellows are better in their over-all play. The addition of Doug Mac- Donald, a junior and runnerup in the Washington State Junior Golf Tourney in l95l, has given some needed strength to the Indian golf squads To qualify for a spot on the varsity, all interested played in a thirty-six hole match ieighteen at Maple- wood, eighteen at Earlingtonl. The top six golfers become the i953 Renton High Golf squad. ln this contest Doug MacDonald was low man with a total score of one hundred thirty-nine. The next five places went to Joe Mance with one hundred forty-six, Jim Anderson, Rich Holloway, Mike Galvin and Jonathan Edwards. At the time this article was written only one match had been played by the Rentonites - a non-confer- ence tilt with Highline. Showing power, that head coach Daniel Rich hopes they will keep all season, the Red- men won hands down fifteen to three, cornering five out of six places. Scoring was based on one point for each nine holes and one point for the whole eighteen. From all indications the Indian golfers have a promising season in the offing. The official schedule for the Puget Sound League is as follows: April 20, Highline at Renton, April 27, Renton at Auburn: May 4, Renton at Clover Park: May ll, Kent-Meridian at Renton: May l8, Puyallup at Renton.
