Weber, Vice-Principal, and the leadership of the Student Body president, the Board of Control attempts to solve the problems that confront the student body at any time during the school year. lt is an organization of student leaders, elected by each roll room to serve one semester. Through this legislative body students have an opportunity to participate in school government, administration, manage- ment, and control of problems relating to student welfare. The various aims of the board are primarily: To sponsor, promote. co-ordinate, and encourage greater student participation in school activities: help in the internal administration of the school by participating in the management of the school, through student committees studying problems of discipline, finances, elections, assemblies, etc., provide opportunities for developing leadership and at the same time reaching mutual understandings of these problemsg and stimulate and develop school spirit, school loyalty and school pride. The board has power by majority vote, subject to the veto of the advisor, to make improvements in the school government and its surroundings, providing these decisions do not conflict with the policies of the Board of Education. lt is the practice of the board to hold meetings once every two weeks and when it is necessary, special ones may be called. The class repre- sentatives get their opportunity to participate in the numerous discussions of various problems and play a deciding factor on some of the issues that come before them. By the students, of the students, and for the students, that's our Board of Control. is ti aw '95 f-5 S, HELEN BASKETT PAT PETERSON GEORGIA KING President Vice-President Secretary GIRLS' CLUB Under the leadership of Mrs. Mehus, the Girls' Club has had a successful year. ANNUAL STAFF Without this important organization of our school, the l95l-52 lllahee publication would probably not be possible! A lot of credit goes to Miss Schlauch, their adviser, Barbara Berry, Chief Editor, Janet Williams, Junior Editor, and all the capable members of the staff. The staff members are assigned various write-ups of clubs, school activities and events which have taken place during the year. The staff also chooses a cover and a theme and arranges the pictures. Special mention should also be given to Miss Mitchell and her art students, Mr. Fox and the members of the Photo Club, and Mr. Larson. who have worked hard to help make this year's annual one of the best ever. PHOTO CLUB The active members of the Photo Club under the direction of Mr. Dury A. Fox have completed another successful year with Don Cheever, president, .leray Holmes, vice-president, and Gayle Myers, secretary. One of the purposes of the Photo Club is to take pictures for the lllahee, The Chieftain and the local Renton papers. They make posters to advertise the various events of the school. They do many of the pictures and backdrops for the plays and have a big part in the decorations for the Junior Prom and the Senior Ball. Besides their required duties they make their own exhibits and try to improve their knowledge in the field of art. The Renton Art Club adviser is Miss Mitchell, Ben Cabreros, president, Chester Perala, vice-president, and Jerre Howard, secretary. COMMERCIAL CLUB Congratulations to the Commercial Club for another successful year of their services! Under Mr. John Heinle's excel- lent supervision, the officers, President Carolyn Orvella, Vice-President Joyce Hoge and Secretary Ardene Best, have done an outstanding job. Mr. l-leinle has the girls make a first, second and third choice of working for football games, basketball games, or plays and concerts. He then has them work for their choices in different shifts, while he and the officers keep a record of the points earned hy each member for plaque credit. The girls also take count of the attendance at various school activities, sell tickets at basketball games and school plays and work on annual sales. Some members spend the lunch hour during football and basketball seasons, selling advanced tickets to the games. During the football season they sell programs at the games, fans may hear the familiar cries from the Commercial Club members, Programs! Buy your program here! Yes, the members have all worked hard. OFFICE WORKERS Another year has slipped by and as usual the office workers have successfully Carried out their jobs. The helpers in the Main Office, under the direction of Mrs. Warren and Mrs. Myers, busily answered the phones, called students out of class and did other various jobs. Those who assisted Miss Holt in the Attendance Office in filing and keeping other records, cooperated with the girls out in the Counselor's Office by looking up records for them and giving the information which they were seeking for the Counselors. Boys from study hall helped with the records by collecting absentee slips from each of the rooms. While these offices were busily conferring with each other we should remember the offices such as the S.B.A. store where the students, directed by Miss Lundy, courteously supplied us with school goods. We also have the students who assisted the P.E. teachers in the Basket Rooms and those who helped Mrs. Hazel in the Mimeograph Room. We shouldn't forget Miss Shook and all her helpers in the Nurse's Office, as they played an important part in our daily school routine. Bigger in the sense that the originally chartered club, due to the increased membership, was forced to split into two sections. The officers of one club are President AI Aarhus, Vice-President Donilia Foster and Secretary Joan lrwin. The second group was led by President Loretta Caniparoli, Vice-President Roger Cavin and'Secretary Don Phillips. Mr. Archie Breslin is the adviser of both groups. Better in the sense that the club now has more apparatus with which to work. The display windows in the new wing of the building lend themselves to better practice in window decoration and displays. The club is affiliated with state and national Distributive Education Clubs. lt sent representatives to the state convention where Loretta Caniparoli was elected secretary of the Washington's Retailers Club. The club hopes to send a representative to the national convention. Since the Annual must go to press so early in the year, we are not sure whether this has been done or not. SCIENCE CLUB The brain-child of a number of students interested in delving deeper into various branches of science, the Science Club is promising to be both interesting and active. The club is divided into small interest groups, and the members, chosen on the basis of interest, past projects, and freedom to participate in club activities, may participate in any of these groups. Each one of these groups is expected to take over one of the monthly meetings. Individual members are also given club time to present projects of their own. LETTERMEN The Lettermei-i'5 Club, or the Big is supervised by John Suzick whose job it is to see that the members carry out the objectives of their club, The purpose of the club is to render services to the school, to further promote better sportsmanship, and to aid in all athletic functions. Membership in the club is obtained by earning a letter in a major sport. The Lettermen's Club at Renton High is run differently from those of smaller schools in that they do not have funds of their own. Because Of this the annual Lettermen's Ball at the North Renton Rec, is financed by the Renton Recreational Council. The duties of the members include that of Hall Patrol, patrol at basketball games and work connected with the preparation of the gym. Then there is your stadium parking patrol and your track job of carrying hurdles for the dashes and races. FIRE PATROL The Fire Patrol, under faculty supervision of Wilbur Luft, is made up of students both in iunior and senior high school, 73 in number. This Organization consists of Junior and Senior High Chiefs John Bar- dessano and Bob Thomas and captains who post and supervise the stations of the Junior-Senior High School building. Duties of a student fireman are many. During a drill he must first make sure teachers have closed all windows and doors of their rooms and be sure all persons are out of the building and a safe distance away, lt is an obligation of the student on the fire patrol to keep his eyes open for any fire hazards and report them to his adviser. During the atomic air raid drills the patrol makes sure students are lined up against the wall properly and quietly. These are much like the fire drills. Although one week during the year lOct, 8-l3l is set aside for the observation of prevention, Mr, Luft thinks that not enough emphasis is put on the importance of the fire patrol. PEP BAND The Pep Band, under the leadership of Mr. Rockhill, has just completed its thirteenth year at Renton. ' This all-boy organization plays marches and school songs, but their specialty is swing arrangements. On these they work long and hard and so for a job well done, we say: Hats off to the Pep Band! CHEER LEADERS This year's cheer leaders included three gals and one guy . Under the direction of Mrs, Hannus, they put in many hours planning pep assemblies and learning new routines. It was their duty to lead the student body cheering section and keep the school spirit running high. Rain or shine these faithful yell leaders attended the football and basketball games and poured out every ounce of pep and enthusiasm they could muster. This year's band, consisting of 74 mem- bers, was the largest ever, They started the Year out by playing at the University of Washington Stadium for the third straight year, which is an exceptional honor for a high school band. Next, they performed at the Puyallup Fair in the Educa- tion Building, As you all remember, during the football season, they put on extensive maneuvers during half- time at every home game. Their next performance was their l3th annual Winter Band Concert, which was another outstanding per- formance. After the Concert, the public was invited to look at the band's new quarters-a big improvement over the old band-tower, During the month of January the band put on a concert for Foster High School at Foster. The Band entered the contest this year as usual. For the past eleven years they have received a rating of superior. Some members of the band, who do lots of hard work and deserve much credit are the Band managers and the Band Council. These members put in a lot of extra hours straightening out the uniforms and generally making themselves useful. They do all of the behind-the-scenes work for performances and don't get much credit. The Band Managers are: Judy Battello, Lois Roosa, and Carlene Carlson. The Band Council consists of Don Pirie, Dare Schaut, Dick Schopf, Dick Clarke and Cary Kawachi, Let's all give our band three big cheers for the swell job they have done this year and wish them, in the following years, all of the success and good luck that they have had this year. ORCHESTRA The Renton High School Orchestra of l95l-52 is one of the largest groups of its kind in the schooY's history. Besides having more members, the organization is also one of the finest and has an outstanding string section. The orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Randall Rockhill, performed, among other things, for the foi- lowing activities: Fall Play, Christmas Concert, Baccalaureate, and Commencement. They also participated in an annual Western Washington Orchestra Contest, in which they received superior rating with special mention last year. CHORUS The Senior High Chorus, a group of about 70 voices, has played an important part in the musical activ- ities of the school this Year. The Chorus this Year was directed by Mr, Glenn Bergh. ln addition to the annual Christmas and Spring Concerts the group also contributed an active Dart to the success of the All School Show, Once ln a Year. They participated in the annual Choral contest which was held at Auburn this year. The chorus made several performances for local service clubs. Their last public appearance was at the baccalaureate service for the graduating seniors. GLEE CLUB A splendid example of Renton's fine music department is the Girls' C-lee Club, directed by Mr. Glenn Bergh. Being the first Girls' Clee Club to use the new building, the girls feel that they have something special to live up to. The club offers much enioyment to its 67 girls, as well as a growing musical education. Their many ren- ditions are performed only when Mr, Bergh feels that they are near perfection, Their work in the Spring and Winter concerts has exemplified their high musical standing, achieved largely because of their efforts and cooperation. DRAMATICS CLUB The Dramatics Club is supervised by Mr. Harley Kirk with Mary Nard presiding, Margie Wicknenko vice- president and Darlene Welch, secretary. There are thirty-three members in all. Their motto could be Few in number. but efficient. The purpose of the club is to give students the opportunity to study drama outside of their curriculum. The Dramatic Club also takes charge of the Thanksgiving assembly, and has a large part in the exchange assemblies with other schools, New members are chosen at the beginning of each school year by those already members of the club. The choices are made on the basis of points, A person is judged on poise, originality, and talent. MAKE - UP CREW Another successful year of the make-up crew has come to a close and the make-up box has been put away until next year. Mr. Hansen advises the crew. It consists of ZO members, who have all worked hard with the help of the chief technician Mickey Donavan and head technicians Darlene Butkovich and Sarah Jane Allison During the school year the crew worked on three major plays: the senior high play, the all school show and the senior class play. Other scheduled iobs were that of the Thanksgiving assembly and making up the Kiwanians as clowns for Hallowe'en. The crew also studied various types of make-up by experiments with photography. This year they ob- tained new equipment in their cover-all aprons, and the new make-up box. STAGE CREW This year there are eleven boys and one girl on the stage crew backing our assemblies and dramatic pro- ductions. They are supervised and instructed by Mr. Harley Kirk, Mr. Phillip Hansen, and Mr. Mann, who also works behind our excellent settings and lighting. Without this crew of fine workers, our productions could not be of such high caliber. They are in charge of lighting, staging and the scenery for our stage productions. They work many hours throughout the year without gaining very much recognition. So let's give them a big hand for their fine work! P. A. CREW Perhaps all you ever notice about the P.A. Crew are a few boys setting up and testing some microphones, but these boys really make an assembly click, The P.A. Crew sets up and fixes some of the equipment. Mr. Ken Pattie, their supervisor, also operates the movie projector, When attending an assembly or athletic event, the people taken for granted most often are the Pt A. Her Princesses were Helen Baskett and Virginia Janisch. The Queen and her court were honored at the annual game, and the dance at the Spanish Castle. During the week prior the coronation, the girls were guests of various service clubs of Renton. At the half time Queen Teresa was crowned by our Queen of l95O, Laverne Schmolke. During intermission at the Spanish Castle, the Queen was presented with a ring of her birthstone, as her birthday was celebrated several days before the Homecoming, and the members of her court were given pearl necklaces. SENIOR BALL One of the biggest events ot the year was the senior ball, with an under sea setting as the theme. Music was furnished by Ted Carper and his orchestra. Intermission program was announced by Rita Mead, mistress of ceremonies. Charlotte Ledingham related a poem about under sea with other seniors acting it out. Darlene Welch and Claudette Aasen did a novelty number. The Cirls' Trio and Boys' Quartet sang a few numbers. Faculty general chairman was Bernice Lloyd who worked with various committees to give all who attended a very enjoyable and memorable time. TOLO DAYS February I8-2l are historic days at dear old Renton High. Not only was it Courtesy Week, but Leap Year, too! Monday was dedicated to Mind Your Manners Day , followed by Friendly Day , with students being pleasant to everyone. The next day being Treat Day , the girls were prepared with gum and candy for their boy friends. Thursday saw the students dressed fit to kill for the obvious reason that it was Dress-up Day. An assembly was held this day, Courtesy Week came to a fine finish with Richard Rockey and Claudette Aasen being crowned king and queen of the tolo dance. The theme was Daisy Mae and Little Abner. JUNIOR PROM Come to the Mardi Cras ll That was the theme selected by the Junior Council under the direction of Miss Husby. The council members were Jonell Drazich, Jan Schauer, Darlene Butkovich, Jackie Irby, Donna Bruce, Lois lllian, Tom Winders, Ron Shields, Bill Berry, and Don Custer. During intermission the Master of Ceremonies, Don Custer, presented various numbers to entertain all those attending the Prom. This year's Prom was as gay and colorful as ever with decorations pertaining to the Mardi C-ras. This was all elaborately done and all the hard work was recognized the moment you stepped into the beautiful surroundings. . X r x . -X ' N R f M r J xf XVJ gm!! . BASEBALL The Renton Indians, as coached by Bill O'Brien, have five returning lettermen. This year's ball club has lots of hustle and competition at most positions. Although lacking experience in a few spots, this year's team will have speed and good batting power. The catchers are Dick Hicklin and George Strugar. The pitchers are Skip Gunderson, Jim Hansen, Gary Thompson, Larry Henry and Gary Kawachi. First base is held down by Gene Pedersen with reserves Fey Millet and Ray Ohman. Down at second base are Dick Raub, Jake Janders and Tony Smart. In the short-stop spot are Don Carlson and Don Dowdell. Third place regular Chuck Burdulis is aided by Mel Bowden and Bob Thomas. The outfields, Clayton Evans, Doug Troyer and George Smith are backed up by Remo Nicoli, Charles Burks, Al Benson, Don Gunderson, Mike Kramer and Mike Galvin. TRACK A pre-season look at the l95l-52 track squad, early in April, showed the Indians to be strong in every track and field event with the exception of the shot and discus. With a returning letterman 'in every event and a number of outstanding boys up from last year's Junior High team, Coach Dwight Felton said he was rather hopeful of the team going all the way this Year.
