Hand Under the direction of Mr. Randall Rockhill, the Renton Junior-Senior High School Band has had a red-letter year during 1950-Sl. They started the school year by playing and marching at the dedication of the new U. of W. stadium for the Wash- ington-Kansas State game. The Band also did their awe-inspiring marching between halves at the home games. Among their most important concert appearance was the winter concert in January. The Band and Pep Band put on an evenings entertainment enjoyed by a capacity audience. Besides their regular spring concert, they will again appear in the Western Washington Band contest which will be held in April, it is hoped they will add another superior rating to the longest string of superior ratings received by any Western Washington school, Added to the equipment of the Band this year was the big bass drum noted as the largest west of the Mississippi. Best, is an enthusiastic group consisting of 65 mem- bers. lt plays a very important part in the school life at Renton High. The Chorus started off the school year by singing at the Western Washington Fair at Puyallup. They gave two performances, one of which was broadcast. ln November, the Chorus helped in the promotion of the bond issues at a football game. One of the highlights of the year was the annual chorus processional which opened the Christmas concert. They also per- formed at the spring concert and concert-review assemblies. They sang a variety of selections-popular, semi-popular and stand- ard a cappella selections. The production numbers presented by the Chorus, complete with action, dancing and costumes, contributed to the success of the all-school show Shore Leave. The Chorus gave a performance for the Kiwanis Club and participated in the chorus and glee club contest held at Enumclaw. Their last performance of the year was at the baccalaureate service for the graduating seniors. 5 ' ff ' ll FRONT ROW, left to right: Lorna Pals, Edith May Lawyer, Barbara Hancock, Nancy Croyle, Vinnie Cooper, Pauline Kozak, Dixie Lee Foster, Diane Plano, Myrnie Hoey, Vernie Hancock, Shirley jorgenson, Beverly Marr, Shirley lones, Phyllis Ellyson, Pat Foster. This year's Fall play, Heaven Can Wait, by Harry Segal, was a tremendous success when appreciative and attentive audiences packed the auditorium on the evenings of November l6th and l7th. Heaven Can Wait is a highly imaginative comedy and its success was due to the hard work the cast, production staff, stage and make-up crew put forth. Members of the faculty on the production staff were: Harley Kirk, director of dra- matics: Philip Hansen, director of staging, and Frances Lowe, who was assistant to the director. Student members were: Georgia King, prompterg Neil Burmester, company man- ager, Janie Reynolds and Lavonne Lawrence, costumes, Bernice Klinger and Vivian Stan- ley, who were in charge of props. The comedy of this phantasy-comedy is about an over-zealous heavenly messenger who collects the soul of a young prize-fighter 60 years too soon. Complications arise when the young man's soul tries to return to its earthly body. The body has been cremated by friends. The highly amusing circumstances following this discovery are coupled with the deeper notes of faith, devotion and fair play-factors that made Heaven Can Wait superior to the average comedy. Senivr P ay 'i. ?' fx f xg Aualher language A new high in dramatic achievement by our high school senior thespians was pre- sented on the stage of the Renton High School auditorium on the evenings of April 26th and 27th. The play was widely appreciated by all. The name was Another Language , and its brilliant authoress-Rose Franken. The plot of the intriguing comedy-drama centers around a domineering and DOSSGS- sive old lady who is the mother of four innocent sons, four harassed daughters-in-law, and a dominating wife of a kind old man. The old witch was ably portrayed by Janie Rey- nolds. One of her daughters-in-law, nicely played by Beverly Burnett, rebels admirably against the old woman and trys to save her marriage from being destroyed. She succeeds in the last act when her husband turns to his mother and says a decisive, Goodbye Mother. The husband in question was brilliantly played by Gary Kent. The other three daughters-in-law gave scintillating performances and were competently played by Sue Hehr, Evenell Hagerty, and Thera Bridgeman. Norman Nobach played a young man with ambitious ideas and designs on the rebelious daughter-in-law. The other three sons were played by Darwin McTighe, Bob Clayton, and Jerry Papke. The poor, suffering husband of the old lady was convincingly played by Bob Piper. The play had a cast of eleven. Mr. Harley Kirk was the faculty director. Mr. Phillip Hansen was in charge of stag- ing. The stage crew worked tirelessly to provide two authentic sets. Frances Lowe was in charge of the production staff. Members of the production staff were: Neil Burmes- ter, Bill Lang, Diane Hougardy, Barbara Fuller, and Janette Rhea. Everybody concerned agreed that the play made theatrical history in Renton High and that it was a very rewarding and worthwhile project. r x-fr'rA 'fi l,j.x ' 1 K' t Ig Dramatirs 61116 FRONT ROW left to rught Darlene Welch Thera Brudgeman Vunnue Cooper Beverly Burnett Barbara Fuller Ceorgua Kung Gayle Myers ROW 2 Lavonne Lawrence Paulune Proctor Aluce Armstrong Duane Hougardy loyce Hoge Leone Somers Mary Nard Emuly Holcomb lane Bugler Bernuce Neulson ROW 3 Dorus Anderson Mernue Hoey Bob Clayton lery Papke Darwun McTughe Gary Kent lum Abraham Margue Wucknenko ROW 4 Don Custer Bob Puper Merwyn Ladwug Don Phullups Don Purue Charles Andreasson Norman Nobaclu The Dramatucs Club under the new durectuon of Mrs Lowe and wuth Beverly Burnett as presudent completed a very successful year The purpose of the club us to promote skull un publuc appearance whether ut be un drama musuc or dancung A tryout for new members us conducted at the begunnung of the year to guve the students a chance to show theur talents Meetungs are held once a month The Thanksguvung assembly program thus year entutled A Korean Thanksguvung was wrutten durected and acted by the members of thus club The club members also took an actuve part un all phases of the All School Show Other events umportant to the club members are the exchange assemblues wuth other schools The Dramatucs Club should recenve a round of applause from students and faculty for provudnng good entertaunment Make-up Ereuf Wuth the Increase of new members the Make up Crew has shown competence and excellent co operatuon The new members were wullung to accept helpful suggestuons guven to them by theur advusors Mr Hansen and Mrs Lowe Two pounts are receuved uf a student has been a member n good standung for one year The next two years a member may receuve three pounts each year after beung a member for two years you may receuve a symbol lThus guves the members three years un whuch to earn a symbol and a possubuluty of eught pounts throughout the three years un Senuor Hugh School l The productuons they worked for were Fall Play All School Show Dramatucs Club Assemblues and Sensor Play FRONT ROW lett to ruglut Lulluan Vaughn Shurley Langeu Vurgunua lanusclu Frances De Mana Muckey Donovan ROW 2 Beverly Seles Soma Edwards Darlene Butkovuclu Sarah Alluson Elaune Catsos lo Anne Zappalo ROW 3 Betty McCann Evelyn Brown Ron Stafford Eddue Eaton lack Lundquuust Shurley Wulkuns Maruon Kampstad NOT SHOWN Charlotte Ledungham II , .t I, , o - o , 4 , 0 . . The sports that were played were Volleyball, Bowling, Basketball and Baseball. Girls' Sports give the girls an excellent place to use up excess energy and to learn good sports- manship. Participants also may earn a letter and plaque credits. The highest seventy-five per cent of the girls turning out for sports are given letters. Each girl is given five points every time she turns out, and two points if she is a member of the winning team. At the end of each session the winning team is given ten points and the team in second place is given five points. At the end of the year a hundred-point bonus is given to each girl who has perfect attendance. -. ills -4-. . , '49 .bl ' , mf Here ? :Qs I 514117768 I' 00 S Azzfcfgrnphs Azzivgraphs V 4 zzfqffrzzplfs J R ff 3 f 7 .
