William Lispenard Robb. ILLIAM LISPENARD ROBB, Ph. D., LL. D., was born at Saratoga Springs. N. Y., on May 9, 1861. He prepared for College at the Owego Academy and entered Columbia in 1876 and graduated in 1880. He was awarded the Fellowship in Science and spent the next three years in Germany, where he studied under Q5 Q Kohlrausch, von Helmholtz and Kirchoff, taking the degree of Ph. D. from the University of Berlin. Returning home he was engaged for a short time in engineering ki- work on the New Croton Aqueduct, New York City, and the following fall was appointed Assistant in Mathematics ,at the School of Mines, Columbia Uni- versity. In 1885 he was called to Trinity College, Hartford, Conn., as Professor of Physics, where he remained seventeen years. During this time he acted as Consulting Engineer of numerous corporations, notably the Hartford Electric Co., the New York Ship- building Co., and the General Electric Co., all of which positions he now holds. During the Spanish War he was in charge of the installation of submarine mines in Long Island Sound. He is a member of the American Physical Society, and of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. In the spring of 1902, Dr. Robb accepted the chair of Physics and Electrical Engineering at the Institute. After accepting his resignation, the Trustees of Trinity College conferred upon him the degree of LL. D., in recognition of his work there. Since he has been in Troy he has impressed his personality upon the courses of instruction in his department, and although he suffered the partial destruction of his laboratory by fire, he has entered upon the work of refittingwith such energy that the courses this year have suffered little. and the future facilities of the department will be materially improved.
